☀️ Good morning ☕

There isn’t a great deal going on with the Jets at the moment but we’re going to touch on a few things today, including whether Breece Hall is the most interesting player to watch ahead of the new season.

There is a new kicker in town according to draft diamonds, but the move has yet to be officially confirmed by the Jets. Let’s get into what news we have.

Around the New York Jets 🟩⬜

  • According to Draft Diamonds, the Jets signed kicker Harrison Mevis who played for the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions. He went 20-21 on FGs in the UFL and has picked up the (hopefully) affectionate nickname “Thiccer Kicker” because of his 242lb weight. Mevis holds the Missouri record for points (415), FG’s made (89) and 50+ FG’s made (12), he also holds the SEC conference record after he made a 61-yard game-winning FG against Kansas State in 2023. It’s safe to say he has a booming leg but he has at times struggled with his accuracy. Over four years in college he made 84% of his kicks but in his two final years it was 78.6% (2022) and 80.0% (2023). He went undrafted in 2024 but was signed by the Panthers but waived relatively early in camp. He’s certainly an interesting name, and he joins Anders Carlson and Caden Davis in the battle for the starters role. It’s a huge opportunity for Mevis.

  • ESPN ran their series where they talk to unnamed coaches and executives on the NFL off-season and there were a few comments around the Jets:

    • Jets selecting TE Mason Taylor at No. 42: "He's f---ing awesome. He was my No. 2 tight end [behind Chicago's Colston Loveland]. He's athletic, he's young (21) and he's got upside in the passing game." -- Veteran NFL offensive coach

    • "A defensive head coach is going to run the ball with Breece Hall and a dangerous weapon to complement the offense in Fields," an NFL coordinator said. "AG will help the defense be even better, too."

  • Alijah Vera-Tucker has been speaking about the Jets offensive line group "I think this is a great group, I think a lot of guys come from backgrounds where you want to come in and work, and everybody in that room has the love for the game, which is really important. The O-line is great, too, and I think we're all on the same page. You know, we all work well together."

  • He also stated that his goal is to build on his healthy 2024 season: "Build on staying healthy, really taking care of my body so I can be out there. And on top of that, just learning more of the game. I feel like you can never stop learning the game within the game. Becoming more of a leader. Do all those things and everything else."

  • The Jets also ran a focus article on rookie Armand Membou and Joe Tippmann is a big fan: "Membou's been somebody who's really surprised, just being a rookie, coming in being as strong, as physical, as fast as he is and along with the learning that I didn't expect him to have. He's come along really well."

  • He’s impressed everyone so far, Aaron Glenn said “Membou’s doing outstanding, he’s working his butt off. He’s learning every day, too”, Tanner Engstrand spoke about how it’s clear that Membou loves football and that’s what they want and AVT said "Shout-out Membou too, he's a rookie but him going against Will McDonald every day is great work. Iron sharpens iron and you can tell he's going to be a baller in this league."

  • PFF ranked the NFL’s receiving cores, and it won’t surprise you to hear they don’t think a lot of the Jets ranking them the 28th best group in the NFL: “Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams were the only Jets receivers to record 64.0-plus PFF receiving grades last season, and Adams is no longer in the fold. Running back Breece Hall was great as a receiver in 2023 (88.9 PFF receiving grade with 591 receiving yards) but took a major step back in 2024. There isn't much else in the way of proven talent. The Jets don't seem like they will be a very pass-happy team this season.”

  • NFL teams have started to announce their training camp dates, so hopefully we’ll get the Jets schedule over the next 24-48 hours.
