Good morning.
C.J. Mosley re-works his deal to open up valuable cap space for the Jets. Corey Davis asks for reinstatement and then gets his release from the Jets. More wide receivers come off the board and is there anywhere for Zach to go?
The Jets and C.J. Mosley agree to a two-year, $17.25 million contract
It was always likely that the Jets would address the contract of C.J. Mosley sooner rather than later, and less than 24 hours into the new league year a deal was struck.
C.J. Mosley agreed to a new two-year $17.25 million deal to replace the last year of his deal. Mosley was set to count $21.5 million against the cap this year, which was problematic for a Jets team needing to improve their roster.
Instead, he signed a new deal opening up over $8 million in cap room this season. That helps the Jets, but Mosley also gets security. His new deal includes $13.25 million in guarantees, including $9 million this season.
The second-team All-Pro in 2023 is not only the defensive captain of the Jet’s highly-ranked unit but he’s also led the team in tackles for three straight years. He’s also been one of the most durable Jets, and you know what they say about the best ability being availability.
This is a solid move for the Jets which keeps a team leader happy and in the building for at least the next two years, while also opening up a good chunk of cap space to improve the offence.
Jets release Corey Davis from his contract
Corey Davis requested to be reinstated by the NFL yesterday and the Jets later revealed that they had released him from his contract, meaning he is free to sign with any team.
Multiple reports indicated that he may return to the Jets, but others stated it was unlikely considering his role was given to Allen Lazard. A report did surface earlier in the day stating Lazard’s name has come up in trade talks, but I just can't see anyone trading for him considering the season he just had.
Corey Davis needed to step away from football last year and it's impossible to tell how that would impact him in 2024. But C.J. Mosley opted out during COVID and picked up right where he left off. I'd welcome Corey back with open arms.
