Good morning!
Are we as Jets fans too blase about the idea of Bryce Huff packing his bags and leaving for pastures new? Has the offensive ineptitude blinded us to the importance of keeping someone like Huff in the building? Can the Jets have their cake and eat it too?
🏆 Good little nugget from the Jets communications team on DJ Reed and how good he was in 2023.
✍️ Good news on Aaron Whitecotton the Jets defensive line coach, who agreed to a new deal to remain with the team yesterday. AW has been instrumental in the development of Quinnen, Bryce and Jermaine Johnson. He also oversaw a career year for Quinton Jefferson last season. Simply one of the best in the business and we have locked him up.
😱 Rich Cimini had a summary of the offensive line issues under Joe Douglas. Here's how the Jets rank since 2020. Sacks: 29th (tie), Pass-block win rate: 26th, Yds/rush: 20th, Run-block win rate: 32nd. Not good, not good at all.
💼 Duce Staley is signing with the Cleveland Browns. He had interviewed with the Jets but it seems as though Cleveland had a more attractive offer. Tony Dews is now the favourite for the RB Coach position considering he's interviewed and has a longstanding relationship with passing game coordinator Toss Downing and offensive line coach Keith Carter.
🐬 The Dolphins and Vic Fangio have mutually agreed to part ways. It's now expected that Fangio will be the top target for the Philadelphia Eagles to hire as their defensive coordinator. Sounds like Fangio wanted to be closer to his family and the Dolphins agreed to part ways to facilitate that.
If you spend enough time looking through Jets content, you'll see praise for the defensive line on a daily basis. Creating immense pressure while refraining from blitzing is the key to this Robert Saleh/Jeff Ulbrich defence. When they arrived we spoke at length about the Wide-9 technique of the defensive ends and how the secondary profits from the defensive line performance.
The Jets finished the season as the 4th ranked defence in terms of pressure rate at 26.5%, yet blitzed on just 16.3% of snaps, the second lowest mark in the NFL. The Jets defensive line was responsible for 43 of the 46 sacks generated by the Jets’ defence…the most by a Jets front four since the 1981 Sack Exchange.
