It is very hard to get excited about a running back coach when the organization is sticking with all the offensive coaches from last year.

I don’t know what he can add to Hall’s game but hopefully he can add to Abanikanda’s game, like his pass blocking which according to the company line wasn’t good enough for him to be in a game last year, forcing them to use Cook and his 3.2 yd a carry.

After watching those games yesterday and looking how those teams were built, I find it very hard to get excited about next year with this current regime.

The Lion’s GM and HC were hired weeks apart in 2021, the same time as Saleh.

To be fair, they were given a fantastic gift when the Rams gave them Goff, 2-1s and a 3 for Stafford.

But look what they did with those picks. Look at the discipline, look at the coaching, look at the offensive schemes. Right or wrong, Campbell went fourth down all year, live by the sword, die by it.

The Chiefs got decimated in the Super Bowl against Tampa Bay because their older offensive line got destroyed by injuries during the playoffs.

What did they do that offseason, signed Thuney to a free agent contract and drafted Creed Humphrey with a 2 and Trey Smith with a 6th, instant Super Bowl winning offensive line.

What they did in one off season, JD hasn’t been able to accomplish in 4.

Again, look at the Chiefs drafts the last 5 years with them picking at the bottom of the round and the Jets when picking from the top of the rounds. It’s all there in plain sight, an excellent GM and HC, great coaching, great scouts, no BS about White House visits or all gas, no brakes.

The Ravens are still using Ozzie Newsome’s blueprint on how to run a successful football franchise, JD must have been sleeping in class all those years there.

Ditto with Frisco, it’s all there, coaching and scouting.

If any Jet fan thinks that Rodgers can turn this around by himself then they must be living in a world with pixies, fairies and unicorns.

There's no doubt that JD has made some bad decisions, but he's had a lot of bad luck with his OL getting injured as well. None of those OL had big injury histories. The turf in the Meadowlands has contributed to that, as the Giants and other team's have suffered some bad injuries there. A new turf was added before this past season, and it may have been worse than the previous turf.

I don't know how KC & SF operate. Does their GM operate more independently or does he seek to build consensus with the CS with regards to the draft and FA? If those two GMs seek to build consensus, is it that their CSs are better, scouts are better, their GMs are better, is it one or two of these factors or all three? Who knows?

I believe that JD tried to sign Thuney but was turned down. A big part of the problem is that the Jets have had little respect in the NFL, and players want to play for a winner, so it's been difficult to sign top FAs, and probably will continue to be until, they can figure out a way to start winning and gaining respect around the NFL. The D is a great start to that, but the offense has to start putting up points in bunches, and as long as Hackett is the OC, I don't see that happening.

The running backs coach hiring could (COULD....let's emphasize that it's a guess, here) be intended to better align the philosophies of the running backs coach, offensive line coach, and the offensive coordinator. Remember that Keith Carter is, technically, the running game coordinator. Downing (his former partner in crime in Tennessee) is the passing game coordinator. For an offense to work, all of the parts have to be moving in the same direction and in the same way. A good example of that was the play that Rodgers got hurt on (the call was quick game so the offensive line was cutting; this meant that Rodgers needed to get rid of the ball early.....he didn't and wound up getting hurt as a result of trying to extend a play that wasn't designed to be extended). Another example was Saleh's late-season quote about Breece Hall doing a better job of taking what the defense gives him more often and not trying to bounce his runs. It's very possible that there was a disconnect between how the running backs coach was coaching his backs to hit holes (maybe with more emphasis on bouncing and trying to hit a home run) and an offensive line that was trying to just open holes long enough for the back to hit a single. That could be the difference between 2nd and 6 or 2nd and 9, or 3rd and 4 and 3rd and 8. Those kind of play-by-play decisions that players make can be crucial. Hopefully, the new signing aligns the coaching staff more than last year.

Honestly....I loved MOST of Joe Douglas' signings and draft picks. The last year and a half is where I've seen stuff I don't love (mostly the Rodgers-centric stuff and Duane Brown). I think his biggest mistake thus far was signing Duane Brown to that massive deal in 2022. It turned out that dedicating that much money to Brown wound up creating this sense that they needed to play the guy. That's how it seemed, at least.

Bobber - if Vince Lombardi, Ween Ewbank, Knute Rockne, Bill Walsh, Crazy Legs Hearsh , & Don Shula were on the sideines for the Jets next year somehow you would still say they suck all other 31 teams are better and no what they are doing. The jets are winning the division next year. Zack Wilson would have had the same game as Jackson yesterday and Newsome didnt even drfat him !!! LOL

Since I’m like an equal opportunity employer, I’m heading over to Ron’s Facebook group to spread more positivity, some of those guys are crankier than me, lol

Steve, Honestly I have no problem with any of Bobber’s comments today. It’s not what we want to hear but I think he’s spot on. We would love to read glowing reports on our future but with the current regime running the show I’m not as optimistic as you apparently are?

Expand full comment

Its day in and day out. I can be the most pesimistic Jet fan on the planet but i am not every single post, every single day, ever single week, evey single month ! Doesnt matter what i want to hear. Most of what he says is dead wrong. How bout saying Salah (who i dont think is a head coach) has not had a QB in his 3 years. Can we see what he does with a QB ? Also its not that I am optimistic - i am 'hoping' our turn will come. Positive thinking and maybe we win a division. Not that the jets and thier orgnaization blow nd suck for the 60 plus years they have been in existance. He would say thet Kotite got it wrong when he kept Crebet.

Steve at one time, I was always the most positive Jet fan alive. I use to get busted for my positivity. I’m just venting, old age makes us old coots cranky.

By the way, I never would have ripped Kotite for keeping Crebet.

Crebet comes from the same town where I live.

In fact Miles Austin ex Cowboy receiver and exJet wr coach plus Louis Castillo, first round pick of the Chargers come from here also.

Lou played dt and ot in junior football while my son played de and ot. Miles was a third string db just to show you how things change. Mile’s older sister while in high school was one of the best javelin thrower during her high school years, got full scholarship to throw for Rutgers.

Understood Bobber. Very intersting on Miles (I remember him). I was teasing you about Crebet.

Actually he had no intention to play high school football, he was a way better basketball player, all he wanted to do was play hoops 24/7, 365 days a year. He won some lower county honors playing hoops.

The football team was going through some lean years, his buddies started giving him the buisness about joining the team. He did his junior year. Got himself a scholarship to Monmouth University, did alright for himself.

He wasn’t drafted. Parcells was running the Cowboys, called him when draft was just done. Said to him, I need Jersey guys down here in Dallas, wanna join us, rest is history.

I try to take something out of every comment. It doesn’t matter if I agree or not! These pages that allow comments are great forums for discussions. Let’s face it, in most cases our wife’s don’t give a 💩 so it’s nice to have a venue to vent or commiserate with fellow fans! Hey, if we all agreed on everything we wouldn’t need to come together here! 👍

hahahahaahhahahahahahaha Well said Ron (not that i agree with it all)

I’m sorry that I try to be the voice of reason, lol, but based on JDs clusterf**k of team building last year and Saleh’s coaching, I really don’t feel inspired that they can be successful.

I want them to prove me wrong. How long is this organization going to be a laughing stock. The organization is a little mixed up they seem to win the March Super Bowl ( free agency)every year then never get near the real deal.

If the right moves are made can they win the division, why not.

But for me, let’s see what December brings. For Jet fans the last 13-14 years, December has become time for Xmas Shopping, who is a draftable standout in the Hewlett-Packard, Texas Roadhouse Aflac Pinstripe Bowl from Yankee Stadium and reading scouting reports from Kiper and McShay

I'd be interested in what about Saleh's coaching you found lacking. I swear, if you reference the "all gas, no brakes" shit from his introductory press conference again, I might have aneurism. That is press bullshit. Please buddy....reference actual coaching stuff and not stuff he says in press conferences.

Expand full comment

On the aneurysm maker, he likes to point that out. Yet, his offenses over that last three years, especially under Hackett have been Ultra conservative. You can’t use injuries as an excuse on this point because both Cleveland and Miami had numerous offensive line injuries plus Flacco was the 4th quarterback that Cleveland used this year.

The Jets in the Red Zone were terrible all season. How many passes did you actually seen thrown into the end zone this year. I could only remember Garrett td 9/11, Conklin drop against the Chiefs. I’m sure Saleh had Hackett play it conservatively but his remark before Raider game, some nonsense about who scores 20 points wins.

He wants all games to be 13-10, he is wearing out his D.

Tell me what constantly winning HC, leads the league or is near top of the list on penalties. His teams offensively and defensively are totally undisciplined. If he yelling behind closed doors, we don’t see any improvements. Good thing, Boyer keeps his unit reasonably penalty free.

After Every game, press conference, when asked why the offense is so horrendous, his answer was always Zach is improving weekly, we see it in practice and the offense needs a tweak or two then you will see a fun offense. Does he think we are blind or stupid or both.

Unfortunately, he is a Rex clone, a glorified DC.

As I pointed out in my original post, coaching and scheme wise, do the Jets look anything like the 4 teams that played yesterday.

I think you might be oversimplifying what happens behind the scenes. Additionally, the shit about his remarks in press conferences are so unimportant, it always surprises me when anybody mentions it. He literally mentioned that during his opening press conference and dumb ass beat reporters have been using it as a headline gimmick ever since. Why does it matter that he employs coach-speak when he answers questions from the press? It, truly, doesn't matter. The on-field product, though? You're right. The offense was terrible and, honestly, it's hard to figure out exactly what was going on behind the scenes. I don't think "passes into the end-zone" are a particularly good measure of offensive efficiency. Plays bank off one another and if the offense winds up, whenever they get into the red zone, with multiple negative plays, you can expect that the red zone trip won't be successful regardless of how many "passes into the end zone" they attempt. Play calling is more complicated than that. It's also more nuanced than saying that they are playing conservatively because Saleh is telling Hackett to call a conservative game. It's not like Hackett is going to be calling plays that are expected to result in a dog shit offense. There are so many different layered reasons that could be behind the way the offense performed, and most of them have nothing to do with the head coach telling his coordinator to call a conservative offense (I am, sort of, wondering what calling a conservative offense means...I don't think I understand that one). Honestly, the Jets offense sometime looks similar to the Chiefs offense in the sense that it operates in fits and starts and often feels like an unfolded lawn chair. The saving grace is that the Chiefs have the best QB of the last decade, the best TE of the last 2 decades, and a generally cohesive unit.

Also....his stuff about the improvement and the tweak or two before the offense clicking were, generally, true. If they stopped shooting themselves in the foot, there is a good chance the offense would've started producing. Unfortunately, that never happened. The fact that there were no visible changes certainly makes you wonder what is going on behind the scenes, but there are myriad explanations that we, simply, don't have the ability to determine.

One thing that can not be denied is Carter’s reputation before he got here, appeared to continue and the fact Hall complained about him is eye opening

we all see the same thing you do - we try and forget about it during the offseason. After two wonderful football games yesterday - why bother dregging this crap up. The jets are going to hire and draft who they will. My gut tells me both GM and Ciach will be gone end of this year. However- i am hoping against hope they are getting it right.

Hi David, I see PFF has NYJ drafting Fuega. That’s my current choice. I want guys with a nasty edge and the size to use it. Separately there’s always chatter that AVT is the best option at RT. IMO, he’s played at an all star level at RG but is only a good RT. Keep him at RG and a chance to be the All Pro we think he is.

Here is a good article from a woman who I think is at the top of what she does, Rivka Boord. https://jetsxfactor.com/2024/01/24/ny-jets-one-way-build-championship-team/

Other than the beginning Round+ in 2022, JD and his staff have done a terrible job drafting. I think u wud all agree that the great organizations are always able to get players in the later rounds. The Jets never seem to do so. Again, I don't know why Rex Hogan is back in his second tour of duty with the team. He was part of another terrible regime.

W now have the Tennessee Jets. I hope this new guy has something better to offer.

I disagree regarding Rivka. She is the primary reason I stopped reading and canceled my subscription to jetsxfactor.

Her article is good stuff. I always read her, Michael Nania and Bent.

Nice to read Bobber's story about his son and his football mates when he was young. I wish I had interesting football related stories, but my best stories are baseball or hockey related. Here is one, my family owned a liquor store in Tenafly NJ and I worked part time while going to college (Fordham Lincoln Center campus) and on an early evening a convertible pulls up with two men and two very attractive women, park in front of the store. One of the guys bounds out of the car and trots in and grabs a couple of bottles. As a Met fanatic I was in awe as the guy paying for the booze is none other than "you gotta believe". Tug McGraw! Loved it. We had some other interesting customers, but the sports related were all baseball such as Yogi Berra, Tony Kubek and Gil McDougal. Gil was special as he gave me a 1957 Yankees team signed ball. Very nice even though I was a Yankee hater at the time.
