☀️ Good morning! ☕
The dominoes continue to fall.
For as long as it’s mathematically possible the Jets management will keep banging the playoff drum. But sometimes I want a coach to come out and call it as it is.
Yes we had a chance at the playoffs, but then we go out there and lose 7/8 games. The best the Jets can do is to finish 9-8, which may not even be enough.
But realistically, the Jets will be lucky to win another game this season. Seahawks, Rams, Bills and Dolphins x 2 are all difficult games. The only one we likely should and will win is against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
That underperformance cost Robert Saleh his job, it’s now cost Joe Douglas his job too. We’re not even at our bye week yet and we’ve already fired two of the most important people in the building.
Unfortunately we’ve arrived at the part of the season where we’re hoping for losses for a better draft pick and debating who should take the reigns going forward. All in the life of a Jets fan.
Today I was planning to outline the perfect people to take this franchise forward, at least in my opinion.
The piece on who I’d hire as GM, HC, OC and DC will need to wait until tomorrow.
Today we have to talk about that decision to fire Joe Douglas, 11 weeks into the season. It’s rare for both the Head Coach and General Manager to lose their jobs this early in this season, but that just shows how disappointing this season has been.
We’re not even at our bye week yet and we’ve already fired our Head Coach, General Manager and demoted our offensive coordinator.
Why now? Well the Jets can start having all those conversations without having to tiptoe around the facility. Can they start interviewing candidates now? I’ve not been able to find a definitive answer to that question.
Woody Johnson confirmed in the above statement that Phil Savage will act as Interim General Manager for the rest of the season and the search for a new General Manager will start immediately. My hope is that the search will lead them to Detroit and Ray Agnew, as I detailed in this piece.
Douglas was hired all the way back in June 2019 on a deal that was set to expire after the 2024 season. Woody Johnson didn’t want to wait that long, giving Joe Douglas and the Jets a 6 month head start on finding a new role/replacement.
The writing was on the wall for Douglas who owns a 30-64 record as Jets GM. In his mid-season meeting with the media, Douglas cut a desolate figure. In reality, Douglas was fired the moment Woody decided to let Robert Saleh go without consulting with him. You don’t do that with a GM you plan to keep.
