Good Morning ☕

Joe Tippmann was set to enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2026, but the Jets weren’t willing to use the wait and see approach on one of their young stars, signing Tippmann to a big 4-year contract extension worth $66.4M with $34.9M in guarantees.

That’s a good contract for Tippmann but not a bad one for the Jets either.

Tippmann has enjoyed three good years in New York where despite a lot of turnover in teammates, quarterbacks and coaches, he’s managed to remain very consistent in his play.

He’s appeared in nearly 3,000 snaps and played full seasons for each of the last two years. He’s currently played 44 straight games for the Jets and that kind of availability has a strong appeal when it comes extending a player.

After largely occupying the centre role for the first two years of his NFL career he shifted over to RG last year with the signing of Josh Myers and made that position his own.

I can only remember one game last year where I thought Tippmann struggles and that was against Dallas in week five. Apart from that I thought he had an excellent season and he was one of only 10 guards in the NFL to have 7 games where he allowed 1 or less pressures.

Considering he’s about to enter his prime and the Jets line as a whole should improve with more time together, this contract is a safe bet by Mougey who is intent on keeping good players and the core intact.

Although Tippmann has the flexibility to play all three interior positions, and despite being drafted as a centre, it seems as though right guard is going to be his position, at least for the foreseeable future.

With the contract handed out to Garrett Wilson last year and Breece Hall this year, the signing of Tippmann shows a eagerness and willingness to rewards their home-grown young players.

Tippmann is now signed through the 2030 season, meaning that at least three of the Jets starting five are secured on long-term deals, allowing them to grow together. Tippmann who’s still only 25 would have been one of the most coveted interior offensive lineman in free agency next off-season and the Jets decided to not take the risk of allowing his contract to run down.

NEWS & NOTES 🗞️

  • QB coach Bill Musgrave was asked to give an update on both Geno Smith and Cade Klubnik:

    • “Geno Smith, I’ve admired him from afar…he’s worked really hard on his career, had a lot of ups and downs, he’s a great leader from all indications and I’m glad to be wearing the Jets colours with him,” Musgrave said, and Cade Klubnik, “Cade’s done well, Cade’s jumped right in. He’s very eager to get this thing and figure it out.”

    • “We kind of studied the grip on the football (Klubnik), he’s got plenty good grip, so there’s not a lot of slipping in mid-motion,” Musgrave elaborated. “Those balls are not coming unravelled when he throws them, they’re not flying coasters by any means. He throws a nice, tight spiral and he really has a great skillset. I don’t think we could be any more excited to work with the young guy than we are.”

  • Frank Reich also spoke about his working relationship with Aaron Glenn:

    • “I don’t want to overstate it, but like the amount of fun that I’ve been having the last couple months with AG,” Reich said after an OTA session. “Because he’s been very involved, asking a lot of questions, giving me what his vision for the whole team is, how that fits offense, defense, special teams. We go back and forth on things in the most dynamic of ways, from personnel, me picking his brain because he was obviously here last year with all these guys, and so doing that with AG and then getting with the coaches and using the experience because the offense is in some ways the same. But I’m always looking, every time I go to a new place – I want to pick things up that are going to make it better.”

  • Garett Wilson also spoke about how reception Geno Smith has been to the scheme that is being installed:

    • “Early on that I thought it was Geno’s offense that he had kind of brought with him from the past,” Wilson said of Smith. “But no, man, he’s just that receptive, that willing to learn and I think that says a lot about someone, and you start to realize, oh, he’s been in here 10-12 years in the league.”

Brendan Sorsby 🟢⚪🗽

Just when you thought the Sorsby discussion was shelved for at least 10 months, the Texas Tech QB decided to throw a spanner in the works.

Sorsby received a temporary injunction against the NCAA on the 8th of June, a decision by a Texas judge to allow him to play college football this year.

A lot of people had an issue with that Injunction, Georgia and Nebraska threatened to boycott the games if Sorsby was allowed to play.

In the end I think the headache wasn’t worth it, not for Sorsby and certainly not for Texas Tech and the Big 10.
