A few weeks ago, Gene Hackman, a great actor, passed away.

One of Hackman’s iconic roles was that of Coach Norman Dale in the movie Hoosiers.

Early in the movie, when things aren’t going his way, his friend, principle Cletus Summers, who hired him, starts to question his tactics.

Coach Dale in response says “ darn’t Cletus, I know what I’m doing.

Early last week at the start of March Super Bowl Free Agent Money Frenzy, all Jet fans the world over turned into Principal Summers, they questioned Glenn and Mougey, Glenn and Mougey’s without orally responding kept up their bargain basement purchases as if to say, “ Darn it, Cletus, we know what we are doing.

By the end of the week, intelligent Jet fans had figured out the master plan. They were copying what Campbell and Holmes did in Detroit 4 years previous.

A few of the more intelligent Jet beat writers, have now put the onus on the Snooze Brothers saying they better hit it right draft week to fix the roster holes for next season.

Actually they better hit it right to start the foundation of a long term winning football franchise.

If there ever was a team that actually hasn’t built a sustained winning foundation, It’s been the Jets.

The Jets have been the NFL version of “ Ground Hog Day”,’ new regime, same results. The names and faces change but the results don’t.

In Joe Douglas’s 5 drafts, there were 35 picks, 19 survivors, possibly 9 starters

Numbers below signify total picks followed by players still on the roster.

7-0

9- 2 Sherwood Carter

7- 7 Sauce, Wilson, JJ, Hall,

Ruckert, Mitchell, Clemons

7-6 McDonald, Tippmann,

Warren, Barnes, Bernard-Converse , Kuntz

5-4. Fashanu, Corley, Allen and Travis

I would hate to try to breakdown Idzik and MacCagnan’s drafts, it would be too depressing.

Glenn and Mougey really have to be on top of their game come draft week, it is imperative.

QUICK THROWS

Late last night the Cincinnati Bengals signed Ja'Marr Chase to a four-year, $161-million extension and Tee Higgins to a four-year deal worth $115 million.

While Garrett Wilson is not yet as good as Chase, the argument can be made he is better than Higgins.

If that being the case, it’s really time for the Jets to pony up before his price gets elevated by other signings.

While the Jets were busy imitating the Lions rebirth, the Lions signed Jet free agent tight end Kenny Yeboah.

A look at the #Jets free-agent signings by position. Projected starter = (s)

Tick tick tick, that’s the clock ticking as three teams await Rodgers decision where he wants to play next season The only thing missing is four days in a cave and delicious mushrooms. The more things change, the more they remain the same with Rodgers.

For you TV and Movie buffs, a little trivia about the actor who played Principal Cletus Summer.

Actor Sheb Wooley portrayed Principal Summers, Wooley was an actor, song writer and singer.

He played on the classic TV show Rawhide as scout Pete Nolan. A fellow actor on that show was a young actor named Clint Eastwood.

Wooley, also wrote and sang novelty songs, his most famous, for you youngsters out there “ Purple People Eaters”

I guess one of Wooley’s greatest accomplishments was that he survived to live 82 years while being married 5 times.

4 years 161 million, just wow, for a WR, and we dare to complain about Stephens at 3 years 36 million. I am following with interest , the Rogers soap opera, so glad our QB situation is settled, so happy that Rogers is some place else. Offer my condolences, to all those Giant and Steeler fans. The QB carousel can be cruel, the Jets did well with Justin Fields and two years 40 million is actually chump change.

Bobber's avatar

Presently the Giants, Steelers and Vikings are playing Quarterback Musical Chairs with Rodgers and Wilson.

I wonder who will be left standing without a quarterback. Let the music play.

Michael R's avatar

Initially I felt that letting Rogers go despite all his Diva flaws was a mistake. Not sure how the Jets will do this season but as hindsight is 20/20, I’m happy with their choice. We should, based on this decision be able to resign Garrett Wilson. Not an inconsequential byproduct of ditching Rogers.

Michael R's avatar

Wherever he goes he goes. For my two cents, I’d wager on the Vikings. Then the battle for Russell Wilson. I have a feeling that the Giants will be left at the alter. They don’t even have a backup QB. Really bad time in 2025 could be coming!

JetOrange's avatar

The Giants have only Tommy DeVito on their Roster at QB. Giants have some very good players on their roster, but are headed for disaster with this QB situation , having ONLY the third overall pick, desperation time. Not sure what the Steelers and the Vikings are thinking.🤔

Bobber's avatar

Giants had Flacco in for a chat Friday

RUMOR DEPT. Rodgers wants Vikings, the ball is in the HC’s hand on that call.

Do they roll with Rodgers or JJ

RUMOR DEPT. 2. Rodgers wants Vikings or he will retire, doubtful the money is too good

RUMOR DEPT3 If Rodgers does any of the above, Steelers want Wilson back.

Again the rumors are changing hourly like the tide

JetOrange's avatar

Drama, drama. If you’re a QB looking for a team, Offensive line is key. Vikings acquired Kelly, Fries & Skule ( depth) looks ideal. Russell Wilson is running out of options ?

Phil's avatar

I think Wilson will end up on the Giants.

Phil's avatar

I think he is going to end up in Minnesota. A Brett Favre rerun.

Bobber's avatar

I think you are 100% correct. Excellent receivers, rebuilt offensive line, his running back from Lambeau is there, excellent offensive minded HC and lastly revenge, keep the Pack out of the playoffs

Maine Thom's avatar

What does that say about the Vikings faith in JJ?

Mike Z's avatar

I don't think the move would affect McCarthy at all. The Vikings went as far as they could with Darnold last year, and I think they see AR as someone who could take them a step or two later in the playoffs, similar to what the Jets attempted with him. Personally, I think it's fool's gold on their part, but they are in a much better position to do that with AR than the Jets were. But who knows what the noted spelunker will end up doing in the end. He just loves to drag things out. But it is of no matter to us at this point.

Mike Z's avatar

You picked a great example of Gene Hackman's character in Hoosiers, which to me is the best sports film ever made hands down. And Sheb Wooley is a name well known to me and he was a very talented man, especially in marriage, lol. But you cannot mention Hoosiers without mentioning the performance of Dennis Hopper as Shooter, one of his best roles.

Bobber's avatar

Shooter

Don’t let the paint dry

Jimmy Chitwood

I play, he stays, he goes, I go

Norm

If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don't care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, in my book we're gonna be winners.

Phil's avatar

One of your best posts.

Bobber's avatar

Sauce’s contract just went up

Record deal: Texans All-Pro CB Derek Stingley Jr has agreed to a three-year, $90 million extension including $89 million guaranteed. At $30M base value per year, Stingley is now the highest paid defensive back in NFL history. The CB market has been completely reset.

Phil's avatar

Unless something changes, while I think Mason Graham would be great to get, I think they have to go Tyler Warren. Many are saying they are going to take the Tackle Armand Membou.

Mike Z's avatar

I think that there is no question that they will take Warren at #7. They brought in Fields and at present don't have a real receiving tight end on the roster. I think Warren is a plug-and-play guy that could give the Jet offense an immediate boost. I don't think the Jets have had a TE anything like Warren since Mickey Schuler. The only thing endangering that is if someone above grabs him first. It will all depend on how the QB's fall over the first 5 picks.

Abdul Salaam's avatar

Nnamdi, Cowart, and Tufele, and perhaps Mathis too, are all vying for same job. At 1 tech / NT. That tells me that Graham is not the pick. Sadly. I think he’d be perfect, and we’d have our DL set for 5 years. However we also can do the same at OT. Lastly , Taylor is 3T all the way and has earned a back up role to Q.

Craig Collins's avatar

I'm not sad at all about missing on Graham. IMO the Jets need to focus on fixing their weakest unit, and that is the offense. I understand that you may be focusing on D because the player you like and are using as your handle was a Jet defender. If Fields or the the QB they draft this year or next has any chance of succeeding the Jets need to have plenty of weapons around them. Presently, they have the RBs and only G. Wilson as a receiver. They have nothing at TE. Nothing after Wilson. IMO the first two picks should be TE and WR or WR and TE. The only variance should be if they can trade down in the 2nd round and add an additional 2nd round pick. Then they could add a RT to the mix. They can add an Edge, DT, and S in the 4th round and lower.

Abdul Salaam's avatar

They HAVE to have a RT as well. So if you don’t get Graham then go Warren or Membou.

Abdul Salaam's avatar

Also RT if you go with top guy then you’d have the top OL in 2 consecutive drafts. You can build your offense for next 3 years with a dominant OL. That’s what we’ve neglected to do since Rex

Craig Collins's avatar

Yes they have to have a RT, but that doesn't mean it has to be the 1st round pick.

Abdul Salaam's avatar

PUKA 5th rd, Robbie Anderson UDFA, Terrell Owens 3rd rd, Brandon Marshall 4th rd, cooper Cupp 3rd rd.

Abdul Salaam's avatar

WR’s are a dime a dozen. You can find one later

Craig Collins's avatar

LOL That isn't even close to being accurate! I totally disagree.

Abdul Salaam's avatar

Always can find low round or UDFA’s who can catch and run. Big boys you gotta draft. OT and DT. You bc a find some interior OL in lower rounds but OT are rare humans. Superstar DT’s as well. Only so many 300lb people who can move like that whereas as you can always finds some decent WRs. I’m not saying stars but decent . TE’s are a bit unique as well. So I’m in on Warren but please not WR.

Craig Collins's avatar

You won't win anything with low round WRs. The chances of finding quality WRs in the low rounds or as UDFA are slim an none. WRs are considered the 4th most important position after QB, LT, and Edge.

Michael R's avatar

Time will tell but stopping the run up the gut on a consistent basis is essential!

JetOrange's avatar

Derrick Nnadi and Byron Cowart are role player at best at Defensive Tackle. I am overly optimistic on the potential development of Leonard Taylor & Phidarian Mathis, it’s those green colored glasses, also at DT. With the draft approaching, there could be a shift in priorities, with Edge surpassing DT, as far as needs for this team.

Ron Alexander's avatar

J.O, I like what we saw from Taylor last season. I thought he should have gotten more snaps. It will be interesting to see what kind of shape he comes in at minicamp. Also curious to see how AG feels about our two sophomore DE’s🤔

Mike Z's avatar

What I can't understand is that Clemons is still on the roster. I hope AG doesn't think he can fix him, plus his salary triples if he's on the roster. He wasn't worth the $998,000 he was being paid.

Craig Collins's avatar

Is Clemons due a bonus or will his salary just go up if he is on the final roster? The new regime may think that they can get more out of him. He has the size to be able to set the edge. The Jets have had a ton of holes, and they probably haven't wanted to create any more if they can help it. I think if he doesn't show anything in TC, he will be gone.

Mike Z's avatar

I read an article, I forget where, that explained that after a certain time in the league and a player meets certain quotas that start an escalation clause that would raise his salary automatically from $998 K to $3.3 million if he was on the opening day roster, or something along those lines. There was another Jet player who is also eligible, but I can't recall who. I want to say it might have come from PFF, but I can't remember. It might have been Jets X-Factor, so I'm going to look back at the saved columns I have.

Michael R's avatar

I saw that too, it could have been Jets X factor as I read that as well.

Craig Collins's avatar

Thanks, Mike. I think I've heard that before. So with that being the case, the Jets have the rest of the offseason to make a decision on Clemons and to try to find a replacement. I definitely would hope that he would be replaced if his play doesn't improve markedly.

Michael R's avatar

From your mouth to god’s ear!

Ron Alexander's avatar

My guess is AG will have a nice chat with him about conducting himself a tad more professionally! 😂

Craig Collins's avatar

I agree, but imo they need to do more than just have a chat with him about that. They need to light a fire under his ass to get him being more productive. If not, there's no reason to keep him on the roster.

Michael R's avatar

This is a wrestling or boxing match. He accumulates more penalties than rotting food accrues roaches. If he is unchanged, he’s gotta go!

Ron Alexander's avatar

😂 I was being sarcastic! I’m pretty sure that chat will be less than cordial 😂

Craig Collins's avatar

I thought so, but unfortunately sarcasm doesn't always come across on the internet. I wish there were a sarcasm font we could use!

Craig Collins's avatar

I'm high on Taylor, but not nearly as high on Mathis. They both play the same position (3T) which is the same as Q. I don't see any way that Glenn/Wilks are going to start two 3T DTs and they don't need two backups for Q. The only way I can see Mathis making the roster is if the Jets traded Q, and then the Jets drafted another 3T DT and let the three of them battle it out and kept Mathis for insurance purposes.

I definitely think Edge will prove to be a higher priority than DT for the Jets in the draft.

Craig Collins's avatar

I read a short article last night on MSN that said something like Nnadi is perfect for changing the culture for the Jets because of his attitude and is a coach's dream. After I had looked at a number of other articles, I thought I should copy the exact quote, but when I searched for it I couldn't find it. That's a really big negative about the MSN. They have hundreds of articles on many different topics, that they rotate, and even when one uses the search feature, and remembers the exact title of the article, it doesn't find it. At any rate, I hope that Nnadi will prove to be the run stuffer they need and can help mentor the young DT that the Jets draft.

I'm really shocked that the Jets signed Kris Boyd. Between all the penalties and shoving his coach, he doesn't seem to have the proper attitude or like he will fit the disciplined culture they want to instill, but maybe they think they can fix that and his STs play is worth it otherwise.

Tyler Johnson looks like he could potentially help as the #3 WR, but has been underwhelming so far in his career, and the Jets need someone a lot better to help take pressure off of G. Wilson. Counting on a rookie to do that is not wise imo. Tyler Lockett is still there and not that expensive.

Phil's avatar

How about Amari Cooper?

Craig Collins's avatar

He can still play, but I don't think he's come to the Jets even if they could afford or were willing to pay what he wanted.
