This is a first, praising the Offensive Coaching Staff. Todd Downing, Passing Game Coordinator/ QB Coach. UNDFA QB Peasley and UFL Star Martinez, looked poised and controlled the Offense. Martinez 6-10 , 104 yards with a drop, is a dual threat QB who has nice feel for the game. Peasley was 8-11 for 73 made all the easy throws, look easy , with a beautiful TD pass to Brownlee. Two QB’s that looked well coached.

Tony Dews, is the Running Back Coach, has Breece Hall, but Braelon Allen is a BEAST, looked like Jim Brown, has more speed than you think, and has very nice hands. Isaiah Davis had 3 very bad slips on the turf, but ran hard, runs very good routes, is fast, quick and can cut. Will be a Jack of all trades for this team. Tony has three other backs , Izzy, Valladay & Jackson all ran hard. Shawn Jefferson WR Coach could be partially responsible for bringing Lazard back from the dead, but his biggest contribution could be the development of UNDFA WR Jason Brownlee who is starting to blossom. Anxious to see more of newby WR Brandon Smith. Keith Carter is the Offensive Line Coach. Olu looked very smooth in Pass Protection, but was surprisingly effective as a run blocker. Reserve Offensive lineman are difficult to evaluate , but I thought Xavier Newman looked very good at LG, Chris Glaser looked okay at Center, and the Jets need a backup Center. Impressed by UFL OG Kohl Levao.

This was an Offense that looked well coached and played okay, I was impressed.

Hopefully a season long trend

We will have a better idea as preseason progresses…but I too felt that the team was better coached. There was also an absence of senseless penalties. I like the idea of yanking the player off the field if he commits one.

In any event, it’s early but if these trends continue, the season will be an exciting one.!

The coaches seem to realize that this is a make-or-break season and are acting accordingly, because if the season goes belly-up, the entire staff will be looking for jobs.

Guard Kohl Levao had the most snaps on offense and looked pretty impressive. You never heard his name mentioned, which is a very good thing. I think he has a real chance to stick. Another UFL guy. The only chance Izzy has is if the Jets carry 4 RB's and everyone else in camp tanks. Allen was exactly what we thought he would be, and Davis has the look of an excellent all-around, 3rd down type of back. He had a couple of slips, but he'll get over that. On pass plays he looks very natural with the ball in his hands. Both Peasley and Martinez looked good, this could be the only QB competition in camp, lol. This kid Brandon Smith has some talent, he almost looked like Lavernues Coles out there. I think Kuntz will not survive TC this year.

As far as the coaching goes, they all know what is on the line here, so they better be doing the right things. Olu really looks like he is the future at LT, and it looks like Tyron Smith is rubbing off on him. If Smith decides to hang it up after this season, the Jets should offer him an assistant OL coach position, I think he would be pretty good at it.

On Defense , 2023 Sixth round draft pick Jarrick Bernard Converse outplayed Washington’s 2023 First Round CB Emmanuel Forbes. Scouting and player Development. JBC has ball skills, and will get plenty of turnovers. Stiggers was okay in coverage, but demonstrated that he could tackle , which is a weakness in his game. Safety Jaylen Keys made plays, is making the argument for carrying of a Fifth Safety. Leonard Taylor has upside at DT, a play maker, needs to make the 53. Jets have some very nice young players

Expand full comment

It was the first preseason game of the year and that’s exactly what it played out as.

For some members of the 90 man roster it’s about survival, did they show enough to get more playing time next week.

Unfortunately for Jimmy Ciarlo, he was injured. According to Cimini, he was waived injured, so there is a possibility that the Jets can retain him if he passes through waivers and put him on the IR if he showed enough for 2025.

The fact only one player was injured, is a win regardless of the score board.

After watching Allen, between his size and speed, sort of hard to believe he was only a fourth round pick, definitely is entrenched as running back #2. Four running backs were taken before him in that frame.

Defensively the two players who received the most post game coverage were JBC and Taylor.

I found a website called JetsFix, he actually analyzed every player that set foot on the field and played. Here is what was written

Jarrick Bernard-Converse got off to a bad start when a 42-yard pass was completed to Dyami Brown over him. However, even on that play, he was in a great position and just unlucky not to get a fingertip on the ball as Brown made a tough catc

After that, Bernard-Converse was superb as Washington went after him several times and all of them were incomplete. He broke up one pass at the goal line and disrupted a few others, then added a run stop on the edge for good measure.

After the game, there was plenty of hype over the performance of Leonard Taylor IIIwho was the only player credited with a sack and also blew up another run in the backfield. He also beat his man into the backfield a couple of other times on pass rushes.

The issue with Taylor has always been his consistency and that showed up here. He missed two tackles and was driven off the line or controlled at the point of attack three times. If he can give a more consistent effort, perhaps in a lighter rotational role, the Jets could have something here with Taylor.

Cutdown day, is going to be a very trying experience for Douglas and his staff. It appears that the Jets have a plethora of defensive linemen and cornerbacks.

Do the Jets only keep three running backs or three tight ends to keep an extra defensive lineman or cornerback.

What happens if #7 Where’s Waldo is still out there and hasn’t reported.

The Jets maybe carrying 4 TE’s. Zack Kuntz looked lost on Saturday, but they signed Firkser. They cut Jimmy Ciarlo yesterday, and immediately signed TE , UNDFA Neal Johnson , very curious.

Expand full comment

They're definitely churning the bottom of the tightend depth chart. You get the idea of the kind of guy they're looking to bring in, however. Neither Neil Johnson or Anthony Firkser have prototypical tightend size. They aren't in-line guys but could certainly moonlight in that role if necessary. They're prototype F (move) tightends. All of this activity at the position suggests that Kuntz isn't making enough progress.

Expand full comment

You could even see it, Kuntz seemed to be a little off on every play I watched. Having the athletic prowess doesn't mean a thing if you cannot use those talents properly. He just seems lost out there.

Expand full comment

They are churning , don’t think this effects the top three

Expand full comment

Definitely. Conklin, Ruckert, and Yeboah are the guys. You could see somebody like Firkser make a play for Yeboah's job, but that'd be more of a situation where an injury is involved. They're trying to find somebody to develop on the practice squad and keep around during the season for practice.

Our favorite missing person has requested (demanded?) a trade. JD has released a statement: "Nah, buddy. Show up to work; then we'll talk." Game of chicken......begin!

That's exactly what JD needed to do and do it publicly like this. It puts RedDICK on his back foot wondering what went wrong, lol. I don't know if this whole exercise was his own idea or one of his "advisers", lol. Whichever way it was, they chose.............unwisely. And he's not going to get much sympathy either. I'm curious to see if he's going to show up and work out the deal he was offered or sit home and rack up fines. It's really mind-boggling when you look at it from a tactical standpoint. He painted himself into a corner and the only option is to bust a hole in the wall to get out.

Thanks Bobber, good post! Decisions…Decisions. As the quality of the roster improves, there are players we would like to keep who will not pass through waivers. Perhaps we don’t keep a 4th RB or TE to add an extra CB or lineman.

Such are the challenges of roster construction and a roster that is no longer devoid of talent.

I must say that Brownlee seems to be showing some improvement. Well, time will tell!

Does anyone know the extent of Ciarlo’s injury?

Also, this is preseason for coaching staff too. Did anyone notice last down and distance play of the game for Jets where Washington still had a timeout left and Jets still ran up middle? It was a great opportunity to fake the run and take a shot at end zone to try to catch them napping. If covered, throw it away. Not a huge deal but I remain concerned about this coaching staff’s situational awareness. It is the Achilles heel of this team this year imo. Coaching on O side of ball is super weak

Expand full comment

The coaching staff did the right thing by running up the middle. At that point, they've seen everything they want to see. Taking a shot at the end zone is just another chance for something bad to happen. It's also possible the staff would rather see the backup offensive linemen work on the running game than pass pro. There isn't a lot to gain from dissecting the situational football decisions during a preseason game.

Robert Saleh said undrafted LB Jimmy Ciarlo tore his ACL on Saturday.

Expand full comment

Tough break for the kid. I guess he'll go in the Army now and let them pay for the surgery and rehab.

Expand full comment

Doug, the extent of his injury is really not that important. He wasn’t making the 53 this year anyway. Sherwood is showing a great deal of improvement and Saleh loves Surratt and we drafted a couple kids in Zaire Barnes and another guy whose name escapes me. I think this injury may allow us to keep him as I don’t see any team claiming him injured. Who knows maybe we can build him up a bit and develop him to replace Mosely when he moves on.

Expand full comment

Unless we lose Sherwood in FA next offseson because he wants to start, imo HE will replace Mosely, not Ciarlo. Barnes is the only other LB on the roster that was drafted. JD signed a UDFA from Cal whose name escapes me. I had hopes for him as he had a good career at Cal, but I haven't heard his name mentioned once all offseason, and that's why I can never remember his name. Ah, wait it's Jackson Sirmon. We also have Sam Eguavoen who played pretty well last season in spots and Marcellino-McCray Ball. Both of them were FAs, the former from Miami, and the latter from the Niners.

There was one sequence on Saturday, 2 runs for maybe 3 yds tops, then another run for maybe 1-2 yds. They were not in fg range

The camera caught it right. Rodgers walked past Hackett with his head down, not looking happy, walked past the coaches then turned walking towards the bench, he was shaking his head very subtly

Hopefully when the season starts as long as Rodgers is healthy, we won’t be hearing about Hackett though Rodgers will probably throw verbal bouquets at him during post game pressers

Only hope is to give Rodgers 100 percent control even if he is not playing. But clock management ask of Aaron is asking a bit too much.

I went to the game (if you call it that) Saturday. Yhey charge full price for a glorified practice. This is the price we pay as seaons ticket holders. I get the injury factor but if Josh Allen and Mahomes can play then Rogers cetrainly can for a series. As well as other starters. I thought Peasley was really good. I now question why they drafted a QB that is so injured he is in the witness protection program without a status. They took a guy who couldnt work out in OTAs, mini camp and now the preseason. Say Rogers retires after this year the Jets still DON'T HAVE A QB ! I don't get this pick at all when they would have to start next year to train him - just draft one next year - Hackenburg Part 2 - ridiculous.

Expand full comment

Travis should begin practicing at some point during the season, so the Jets will have some idea of what he's capable of. I think they may keep both Peasley and Martinez on the PS as insurance not only for this season but for next. If Rodgers retires, I imagine they will keep Tyrod if they can, and then most likely will draft a QB with their 1st round pick, and may even trade up to take a QB if one drops that they like. It's not impossible that either Peasley or Martinez could develop into their future QB, but more likely, would be their backup QB of the future. We could see a TC competition between Travis and Peasley or Martinez next year for the backup job.

Expand full comment

All good points. Rodgers should be playing in every game imo. But this kid Jordan Travis is the real deal - I assure you. That said, given depth of roster I do think they IR him this year.

Expand full comment

I did watch him a lot in college and see Joe Montana-like traits. Very accurate and excellent decision making.

Expand full comment

Parcells said the most important aspect of QB evaluation is accuracy. Travis is supposedly very accurate AND has plus mobility AND high level leadership. FSU was 11-0 with him. He basically same size as Daniels from LSU. Since you can’t hit QB anymore, these smaller guys can make it.

Expand full comment

I'm not so sure that smaller guys (QBs) can make it. Seeing over the OL and getting passes batted down at the LOS is a problem. Injuries are another problem, because even though defenders may get penalized, they're still gonna hit the QB. Also, playing in the NE small QBs usually don't have the arm strength necessary to be successful in the winter winds. I'd rather see Peasley or maybe Martinez (although I'm not certain how much bigger he is that Travis) make it over Travis, but in reality, I think at best, those QBs are going to wind up being career backup QBs.

Expand full comment

Douglas, real deal? Sorry my friend but I’m just not seeing that. He’s undersized with average at best arm strength. And he was injured. Didn’t like the pick in April and like it even less now. I saw enough of him in college that tells me is a Tyrod Taylor career backup at best.

Expand full comment

The league needs plenty of Tyrod Taylor backup types. I'm sure that, given the right environment, a Tyrod Taylor type could make a good starter. Consider the case of Brock Purdy; do we really think that he came into the league with any more potential than Jordan Travis, Mac Jones, Jake Browning, or any other undersized/average-armed quarterback? It has so much to do with work ethic, a quarterback room conducive to learning, and an offensive coaching staff that can provide a seamless offense to transition into. Jordan Love was able to learn under a HOF quarterback and one of the best offensive minded coaches in the league. We're probably not all that surprised that he is producing. Purdy came into the league with zero pressure, the best offensive mind in the league, an experienced offensive line, and an absurd number of weapons. Are we really surprised that he succeeded and was able to build up his confidence? Quarterbacking is so tilted toward the mental side of the game that the most physically gifted are often beat out by guys who have more confidence in a system and a better understanding of said system. It's throwing darts at different guys, but also creating a nurturing environment for the Q to grow. In other words, it's the completely opposite environment of what Mark Sanchez (probably to a lesser degree early on; he was in a good place early), Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, and Zach Wilson experienced.

Douglas, true enough. That’s all fair and good! It’s just one guys opinion but I wasn’t a fan of drafting him. But I’m once again fine with being Rosen wrong. I’m beginning to wonder if maybe this is literally a medical redshirt year for him? It will be interesting to see if Martinez and or Peasley can build off their solid performances as the preseason moves along.

Expand full comment

Douglas has probably watched much more of him than I have. I, on the other hand, was a fan of taking a late-late-late flier on somebody like Hartman. These guys are a dime a dozen and they're all uber-experienced. It boils down to the work the scouting department does behind the scenes. Do they like the kid's mental makeup? That's usually what tells you whether the coaching staff will be successful with the kid. Here's hoping Travis gets to rehab, learn the playbook, adjust to life as an adult, and soak up tons of juicy nuggets of information from the plethora of vets on this team.

Expand full comment

Just read where the coaching staff is happy with him knowing the offense so it looks like the mental side won’t be his problem unlike the last QB we drafted😂 My concern was the sleight frame and less than strong arm strength. Playing in the north east means playing in the wind. A strong arm is a big plus.

I loved seeing the kids play! I really like Allen, and like Davis more and more. How about that JBC? I just had a gut feeling last year when I read about him and saw some video from college that he could work out to be very good for the Jets. Only gave up one pass and he was on that WR like ugly on an ape, the WR just made a great catch.

Based on what I've read Kohl Levao looked very good, and that should help improve our IOL depth.

Our LB corps may about equal our CB corps as the strongest and deepest unit on the team. Our RB corps is in excellent shape. Great news that Mike Williams started practicing today, along with Lazard looking much better, Brownlee coming on, Gipson looking good, Corley developing, and a nice surprise in Brandon Smith. Did Malik Taylor play on Saturday? I never heard his name called once. Our WR corps may wind being a lot better than anyone thought. Our TEs will be fine with Conklin, Ruckert and Yeboah (sounds like a pricey law firm), and who knows, they may even keep Firkser, Sefcik, or the new kid they just brought in. With Taylor making some splashes, our DL looks even deeper. If he keeps it up, there's no way the Jets will be able to sneak him on to the PS squad. They may have get really creative to keep everyone they want. Q, Kinlaw, JJ, Clemons, McDonald, Thomas and Fotu are locks. I think they'll only be able to keep 9 DL. If Reddick is here, he'll be a lock as well, so that would only leave 1 or at most, 2 spots left on the DL to go between Takk, Taylor, Watt, and McGregor. S is the weakest unit. I hope that JD can sign a camp cut who will be as good or better than Oliver. Unless Key really starts showing out, I think he and maybe Monroe will go to the PS.

I was a little disappointed in our 2nd string OL. They looked much better last season in TC than this year. They were pretty good in pass protection, but had some issues in run blocking, but then I think they may have been playing against Washington's starters for at least part of the time.
