Jacoby Brissett
Edition #1024: The Jets miss out on Greg Roman and can they convince the Cardinals to move Brissett?
Good Morning ☕
So Greg Roman will be overseeing a running game in New York, it just won’t be with the Jets.
Last night it was revealed that Roman, who was a finalist for the Jets OC position was reuniting with John Harbaugh with the Giants. That makes perfect sense for him and it’s a shame for the Jets, but Roman and Harbaugh worked together for years in Baltimore, so it was always a tough sell for the Jets.
He would have been an outstanding addition to Frank Reich’s staff but we move on. There is still a lot of work to do on that offensive staff and the hope is that Darrell Bevell, who was also a finalist for the Jets OC position will take a role on the staff.
It’s all a little quiet around the Jets at the moment with the focus on Sunday Night’s Super Bowl. But we' had the NFL announced last night and the Hall of Fame, so we’ll get into a few of those but keep things short today.
NEWS & NOTES
Congratulations to Matthew Stafford who was named NFL MVP after throwing for 4707 yards and 46 touchdowns. He also announced that he’d be returning to the Rams next season.
Drew Brees headlines the Pro Football HOF class of 2026. The former Saints QB will be joined by receiver Larry Fitzgerald, linebacker Luke Kuechly and kicker Adam Vinatieri. Not forgetting running back Roger Craig who was a senior addition to the class.
Former Jets Tight end Zack Kuntz has signed with the Miami Dolphins despite not making a single ripple since being drafted in 2023. Kuntz is prove that as long as you have raw athleticism, people will try and mould you into a football player.
Zack Rosenblatt has confirmed that Joe Tippmann would like to sign an early contract extension with the Jets: “Would love to sign a new deal with the Jets early, especially now that his value has increased playing (and thriving) at guard as opposed to center, the position they drafted him to play.”
There was a video of Harrison Phillips doing the rounds where he talked about Glenn inheriting a cancerous team, but Brian Costello later caught up with him “I caught up with Harrison Phillips on this here in SF. He wanted to make clear he was saying the mindset of Same Old Jets is “cancerous” and was not criticizing individuals. He felt when Jets started losing they slipped into “same old Jets.” “That’s a cancerous thought to have.””
A former Kyler Murray teammate has warned the Jets off trading for him according to Rich Cimini: “I was talking to someone, one of his former teammates, the other day, and he basically warned off the Jets about [him]. I said, ‘You know the Jets might be going after Kyler in a month or two.’ He goes, ‘No, no, no, the Jets don’t want to do that. You don’t want Kyler Murray as your quarterback.’ This is someone who played with Murray,”
Jacoby Brissett
By the time free-agency gets here I think we’ll have covered every single QB option on the market.
Popular name of the week? Jacoby Brissett.
Whenever you hire a new coach to an influential position you start looking at their background. Who did they coach with, who did they play with, who did they draft, what profile fits the scheme?
Then it’s only logical for certain players at positions of need to be linked with move to join his old coach, it happens so frequently in football.
One of the main criticisms aimed at Aaron Glenn is that he didn’t bring enough of “his” players over with him from Detroit, something I think we’ll see rectified this off-season with the likes of Anzalone.
But would Jacoby Brissett actually make sense for the Jets?
In short…yes.
The Jets don’t have a QB on the roster right now that you’d feel confident heading into the season with as your starter.
Jacoby Brissett has a history with Frank Reich having played under him in Indianapolis in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
He spent three years learning that system and in 2019 he got the opportunity to start 15 games. In those 15 games he went 7-8 which is by far his best run as a starting QB in terms of game outcome, completed 60.9% of his passes for 2942 yards, 18 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions while adding 228 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground. Being responsible for 22 touchdowns, not bad.
It’s also important to note that when Reich had him in 2019, he was pretty green. He’d started 17 games in three years including 15 his first year in Indy, but he was still young and developing his game having been traded just one year after being made a 3rd round pick of the Patriots.
Jacoby Brissett today is a much more refined QB than the one Frank Reich saw in 2019 and at 33 he’s still young enough to have a couple of good seasons under his belt, especially for a team looking for a bridge option over the next 12-24 months.
A lot of people will point to this 2025 record, a 1-11 blemish with the Cardinals. But Brissett was arguably the best thing about that team all season and he showed that he was a better pure QB than Kyler Murray. That Arizona team was an absolute mess, but consider the numbers that Brissett put up
64.9% completion (career high as a full-time starter).
3,366 yards (career high)
23 TDs (career high)
8 INTs (Unfortunately a career high)
6.9 Yards per attempt (another career high as a full-time starter)
It’s also worth noting that Cardinals receivers dropped 16 passes of Brissett’s and his offensive line in the words of PFF:
The Cardinals’ offensive line was among the worst pass-blocking groups in the NFL this season. The unit ranked just 29th in PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating (82.3) after giving up 236 pressures on 746 snaps.
The one issue with Brissett is that he’s not a free agent, so the Jets would need to trade for him. Although when you have as much draft capital as the Jets have, that’s not really a barrier.
As mentioned earlier he knows the Reich system, has historically been adept at doing the things Reich asks, which is most notable keeping turnovers down and getting the ball out on time.
The bigger barrier is whether the Cardinals would want to move him or if new head coach Mike LaFleur sees value in keeping hold of a QB who’s competent in a backup and spot starter role.
Jacoby Brissett signed a 2 year, $12,500,000 contract with the Arizona Cardinals and carries a cap hit of just over $9 million this year, which is incredibly team friendly for what he brings to the franchise.
Brissett is right up there with Cousins for me as viable, realistic and preferred veteran candidates.

Based on what has happened so far in the off season. Whether all these coaches getting fired was Glenn’s idea or Woody’s we probably will never know the whole story.
The one thing that can be said is that Glenn hired these coaches.
I don’t think most fans had a clue if these Jets assistants were good at their jobs or not.
Wilk’s hiring was met with a lot of skepticism
That’s on Glenn, rookie head coaches make hiring mistakes.
MMQB time, there was a portion of the fan base who wanted no part of Fields. His opening day performance against the Steelers stunned the non believers, unfortunately from that point on it was probably the worst quarterback regression in NFL history.
It appeared that Glenn wanted him and him only.
Maybe Glenn should have taken a step back and talk to his offensive confidants that he was so proud to mention when he was hired. “ I’m more than a defensive coach”, he let us know. “ I’ve studied offense with offensive coaches” was his mantra.
Now one year later, the Jets still don’t have an NFL quarterback on their roster.
It’s easy to say I told you so but here is a list of 2025 NFL free agents.
Top Free Agent Quarterbacks in 2025:
* Sam Darnold (Vikings): A key name after a solid year, despite late-season struggles, making him a target for teams like the Giants and Raiders.
* Justin Fields (Steelers): Showed potential for a better fit in a stable system, according to some analysts.
* Russell Wilson (Steelers): Still viewed as effective with the right support, despite a challenging year in Pittsburgh.
* Aaron Rodgers (Jets): After injury, was a veteran presence, though his situation with the Jets was complex.
* Jameis Winston (Browns): A notable veteran option.
* Daniel Jones (Giants): Another prominent QB available, linked to teams like the Vikings and Giants.
* Mason Rudolph (Titans): A solid bridge or backup option.
* Marcus Mariota (Commanders): A reliable veteran who played well as a fill-in.
* other established players like Jameis Winston,Daniel Jones, Mac Jones, and Jacoby Brissett, with many signing deals or finding new homes.
A Patriot victory would be the poisonous cherry on the top of Jets disastrous offseason ice cream sundae
I don’t think there is any way the Cardinals trade him. Why in the world would they? You can’t give up an early draft pick for him. Next.
