Good morning! ☕🥃
It’s never boring as a Jets, it’s just unfortunately not very entertaining either. Yesterday Zach Wilson’s mother took to Instagram to explain the concussion situation. In her video, she said:
“Yesterday was a little bit rough, Zach took some really, really big hits and he fought through it and really tried to just stay out on the field,” Lisa Wilson said. “He didn’t want to go out, he didn’t want to stop playing — so he didn’t tell the sideline, the coaches, the trainers how he was really feeling and tried to just fight through it and be out there for his guys.”
“Finally, after one more blow to the head, he really started having problems with blurred vision and his depth perception,” Lisa Wilson said. “He really started worrying that he was actually going to hurt his team if he stayed out there because his vision was not right and how you can’t play like that.”
It’s a strange one as the CBS coverage seemed to indicate that he was being tested for a concussion but was cleared by a neutral neurologist, then there was some talk of hydration issues and then he was finally removed and put into the concussion protocol. If you look at most concussion cases, it seems unlikely he’ll be cleared for Sunday.
👇 Aaron Rodgers used his weekly spot on the Pat McAfee show to reiterate his belief in the management team at 1JD. Let's be honest, that's hardly a surprise. He also sounded as though he won't be playing again this year but believes he'll play beyond 2024. A lot of talk and nothing has really changed outside of the fact the Jets aren't in it, so it's very likely he won't be playing.
🔄 He also said he was a good recruiter…but considering he helped recruit Billy Turner and Randall Cobb…I'm not sure I'd put that into the positives column. There's a difference between being a good recruiter and convincing the front office to sign your mates.
✖️ Interestingly this weekend we will see the #32 ranked Jets offence against the #32 ranked Washington defence. The real question is…will you be watching?
📝 The Jets made a number of moves yesterday. Signed DL Jalyn Holmes to the active roster from the practice squad. Placed DL Quinton Jefferson on IR. signed DL Manny Jones and RB Jacques Patrick to the practice squad.
🍼 If you were watching the UTSA v Marshall football game last night you'd have seen two very familiar names, McCown and Pennington. Cole Pennington son of Chad and Owen McCown son of Josh faced off with UTSA coming out on top 35-17.
Rarely does a head coach survive three straight losing seasons, but following the defeat in Miami that’s where we stand with Robert Saleh. A man who came in with energy and excitement, a move nearly universally approved among fans and media, a move that promised to bring in a new era, is looking eerily familiar.
If you use a minimum of 10 games coaches, Robert Saleh’s current .333 win percentage is one of the worst in franchise history. Only Lou Holtz .231 (13 games), Rich Kotite .125 (32 games) and Adam Gase .281 (32 games) have a lower mark. Holtz bolted to the safety of Arkansas and college football before the end of his first season lamenting "God did not put Lou Holtz on this earth to coach in the pros.". Kotite stepped down before the last game of his second season before he was fired and never coached again, and Gase was fired after his second season.
Robert Saleh has been afforded the luxury of a third season for many reasons, but should he be awarded a 4th season considering he’s statistically one of the worst coaches in franchise history? Todd Bowles got himself a 4th season but he had a 10-6 record on his resume, in hindsight the 10-22 record in 2016/2017 should have resulted in him being replaced before 2018, the Jets gave him another shot and the 4-12 season was the reward.
Coaches with winning percentages lower than .400 weren’t afforded a great deal of time to turn things around. Bulldog Turner got 14 games with. a .357 win percentage, Charley Winner got 23 games with a .391 win percentage, he was fired 9 games into his second season after a 2-7 start, Pete Carroll was fired after his one season in charge and a 6-10 record (.375), but I think there’s a very real chance that the Jets give Robert Saleh a 4th season, even if the team nosedives the rest of the way.
If he’s not retained…how appealing is the Jets job for potential candidates? And who are those potential candidates?
Let’s address those two questions separately.
