Good morning!
Yesterday I was writing my weekly Jets column for the UK site and I was talking about Jets/Giants, and how personally I don’t see it as a rivalry. We had the game in 1988 that knocked them out of the playoffs, and they largely did the same thing to us in 2011, we’ve had a few heated exchanges down the years, but I largely see them as an annoying sibling. I’ll link that article when it comes out, but I’m interested to hear your thoughts and if you believe it’s a rivalry.
JFM had a great comment on the rivalry": "Personally, I don't want to be the king of New York. I want to be the king of the NFL ... Big brother, little brother, who gives a f---?!"
I also want to apologise for being quiet in the chats recently, as mentioned the whole family has been a touch under the weather and the only thing worse than feeling awful yourself is having a 3-year-old who’s feeling awful. It also happened to coincide with my main job getting extremely busy. But I’m hoping to get back in the chats next week, mainly to celebrate going 4-3.
Robert Saleh said that they’re still waiting for DJ Reed and Sauce Gardner to pass the concussion protocols. But they both practised fully yesterday, which would indicate they have passed all 5 stages of the concussion protocol and will be back for the Jets on Sunday, that’s huge news.
Joe Tippmann was not practising on Wednesday, and while Saleh would not rule him out for Sunday, he didn’t sound overly optimistic.
Duane Brown is “at least” another week away from returning to practice, which means the Jets probably have another 2 weeks to decide what to do once he’s ready, giving this unit another 2 weeks to prove they should do absolutely nothing when he returns.
Randall Cobb also didn’t practice, although the expectation is he’ll be back in tomorrow. But that did offer the opportunity for Gipson to get some first-team reps yesterday and hopefully, that leads to more chances on Sunday.
It didn’t sound as though Izzy Abanikanda would be active anytime soon. Saleh confirmed that he’s still learning protections and he’s still trying to carve out a role on special teams. Sounds as though if he can tick those boxes he’ll be good to go.
Saleh did say that he believed the Eagles game was the best that Dalvin Cook had run the ball…considering he had 3 carries for 12 yards, I’m not sure that’s saying a lot.
Hurting the Giants
The New York Football Giants are heading into this game on the back of their 2nd win of the season against the embarrassingly inefficient Commanders. But that 2-5 record is based nearly entirely on their inability to score points.
The Giant’s offence is one of the worst units in football, and they’re about the face a Jets unit that is one of the best in football. I’d say we know what’s going to happen, but the NFL is a funny old game.
Through 7 games the Giants have scored 85 points, that’s the lowest in the NFL, and it’s not even that close. The Giants are the only football team in the league to have scored less than 100 points, and that' includes teams who have taken a week off with their bye. The Bengals at 101 points is the second lowest.
