Good morning! ☕
Another week in the books. Another week closer to mandatory training camp. Another week closer to training camp and another week closer to the season kicking off in good old San Francisco.
But who’s counting.
Today we’re going to look at what needs to go right for the Jets to win it all.
🟢 PFF released their list of the top 32 edge defenders in the NFL. Haason Reddick came in at #17 - “Reddick is third on the NFL sack list over the past two seasons (27.5). The pass-rush specialist moved from Philadelphia to New York this offseason, and we'll see if he can keep up his effective pass-rush ways.” but there was no place on the list for Jermaine Johnson, who I actually think is becoming one of the most well-rounded edge defenders. A huge year is on the cards for Jermaine.
⚪ PFF released their list of the top 32 Tight Ends in football too. Tyler Conklin came in at #21: “Conklin has emerged as a reliable target over the past few seasons, and he put up a career-high 622 yards in 2023. He’s caught 21 contested targets over the past two years, the second-most in the NFL.”
🟢 Finally, they released their list of the top 32 interior defenders in the NFL. Quinnen Williams came in at number 3 on that list: “One of the most disruptive defensive tackles in football, Williams has been a game-wrecker since breaking out in 2022. Over the past two seasons, only Lawrence and Jones have more total pressures than his 122, and he has 74 defensive stops over that time, as well. Williams has put together back-to-back seasons with a 90.0-plus PFF grade.”
⚪ Garrett Wilson had some comments on new teammate Malachi Corley recently: "He's a brute," Garrett Wilson said of Corley on Wednesday. "Once he catches that ball he's got great instinct of where the defense is going to be at and how to make someone miss. Just like I was saying, he can go over the middle, take hits. I'm excited to see him run with the ball once we got pads on because I know I wouldn't be trying to tackle him. He looks like a problem, a little bowling ball out there. So, I'm excited."
How do the Jets win the Super Bowl in 2024?
A friend of mine asked that question when I said my expectations were for the Jets to compete for a championship this season. Having not been to the playoffs in the last decade, it’s a bold take. But as we’ve seen from numerous rankings, our belief is based on roster construction and hope, a lot of hope.
So as we launch ourselves into the weekend, I wanted to put my initial thoughts down on what will need to happen for the Jets to compete for the SB this year. Our window is open, we need to dive through it.
A lot of it is based on health. Of course it’s based on health.
