I am worried (of course I am as a Jet fan) what ‘Here we go’ means. The Sweat injury may be minor but hopefully isn’t followed by many more. Health and depth are hallmarks of good teams, but are prerequisites of teams trying to improve. The players on PUP so early around the league is not surprising but injuries like Scourton (Panthers) can derail a team. Fingers crossed 🤞 the Jets get through training camp healthy.

John, I agree that Sweat's hamstring bears watching. Those injuries can linger, and especially for a 366-lb. OL. I hope that it isn't that he simply isn't ion shape, but then again, it might be better if it is that rather than an actual injury that might take some time to heal.

Being a die hard Jet fan, I must admit I’m having a hard time in believing in Aaron Glenn.

There were so many things that he did wrong last year, I really don’t want to insult the intelligence of the fans who post here by repeating his gaffes. There are rookie HC mistakes which are understandable and then there were Glenn’s

Glenn did the impossible last year. He surpassed Rich Kotite as the worst HC in Jet history.

When he was hired, he said “ that he would be involved in not only the defense supposedly his forte but also the offense.

The only thing he showed was that he was a stationary mannequin on the sideline, dressed like Zorro.

The one time he did move was when Will McDonald blocked a kick, scooped it up and scored.

Glenn ran all the way down the sideline with him. He was so exuberant that he failed to notice that the Buccaneers moved down the field faster than Sherman taking Atlanta. It was a piece of cake for them. Then again when you hire an incompetent DC, what do you expect.

Doesn’t it bother this fan base that in 4 years as DC in Detroit and his excellent guidance here last year that his defenses have only been higher than 20th once.

Detroit’s offense saved his a$$ a multitude of times.

Last year’s Jet defense probably set a record that could possibly never happen again, not one interception in 17 games that’s comparable to DiMaggios 56 game hitting streak. For you trivia buffs, after DiMaggio went hitless for the streak stopper, he went on another 16 game hitting streak.

Glenn came off last year as being very stubborn. He reminded us every week “ I know what I’m doing”. He tried his hardest to be Parcells #2. Problem was, Parcell’s words not mine, “ he had no pelts on the wall” to come off that way

One of the criteria that was used to hire him was that he played here, he knew what that was about. The high profile scrutiny, the rabid fan base. The whole New York thing.

Did he present himself that way last year, not a chance.

He came off as combative, inflexible.

Do I think he is on the proverbial hot seat, contrary to what Woody says, yes I do.

Knowing Woody, it’s a Cracker Barrel rocking chair on top of an active volcano.

Based on previous Woody decisions, he probably shot down the Martindale hiring because that would be another contract that he would have to swallow if Glenn doesn’t perform a miracle.

Why he would want Glenn calling the defense is very alarming, considering how his past defenses have performed. Then again Woody is probably trying to save a couple of shekels in case the inevitable happens.

It’s quite possible that the Jet HC job would be very enticing if it was empty for some high profile HC candidates because of the young players on the roster, the talent in the 2027 draft, the three-1s and the amount of salary cap space that would be available.

Would Tomlin be interested, couldn’t answer that but please if not hire a highly qualified offensive coach.

Hiring these defensive minded coaches like Glenn has been disastrous. You know the old saying about insanity. It’s when you constantly do the same thing expecting different results.

Back to Kotite, when Parcells replaced him the Jets went from Kotite’s 1-15 record to Parcells 9-7. Glenn went 3-14 last year replacing 2 HCs that went 5-12.

Proving the point when you hire a guy who knows what he is doing as opposed to a guy who doesn’t the results are very positive and spreads confidence through the fan base.

Rumor has it that bouncers at a night club stopped Geno from entering this weekend.

Geno supposedly said”Do you know who I am”

Bouncer responded, “Yea, we know who you are.”

Nice post. Glenn was given a Mulligan. I am okay with that. And now that he is calling the defense with his Superpowers and with a much better overall roster, we will really see what he has got. Yes, that running down the sideline after the McDonald block was embarrassing. Almost the same as when mike Brown was screaming "Who let the dogs out". However, Brown had just won a championship. Let's see how they come out of the gate. It should be an interesting year.

Tennessee game will get all the ridiculous cliched hype about the former HC trying to get revenge against his former employer who sent him packing after only two games.

One thing to remember, Saleh’s Jet teams were horrendous starters, waking up mid second quarter plus his opening day record is 1-3 and more dismal after byes.

Glenn catches a break here. Maybe they can win. If he does, the negative soothsayers like myself will be silenced for a bit.

If the Jets lose, I could see Woody collecting kindling and putting it under Glenn’s chair.

Woody can say what he wants but he is a big social media guy so a loss would get him amped up

Phil's avatar

There is no way Glenn is getting fired after a few games. Woody is too much vested in him. Let's play out the season. while we may have our fair share of angst along the way, the results by the end of the year will tell the tale.

Craig Collins's avatar

I agree, Phil. In addition, he supposedly learned what happens when you fire a HC during the season. That backlash was huge against Woody, and the Jets were much worse after Saleh was fired. If Woody was to fire Glenn during the season, he'd never get anyone decent to replace him next year, three 1st round draft picks and young talent on the roster or not. If he has any thoughts of possibly firing Glenn after this season, he needs to keep his damn mouth shut, stay out of the news, make no comment when sought out by reporters, and then if he has decided to fire Glenn, do it the second the season ends, and immediately begin the search process sans Tannenbaum. Use Mougey and Spielman to recommend the candidates, then quickly identify which one is the guy and hire him early so he can get the coaches he wants. There should be no more long. protracted searches, and hopefully there will be a quality former HC who was an OC available who will take the job.

Mike Z's avatar

You're preaching to the choir Bobber. I haven't got a shred of confidence in Glenn at this point as an HC, and his tenure as a DC on a team that had a very high-powered offense that covered up his barely tolerable DC ratings is not a positive thing. And the minute he uttered that "superpower" comment, that was it for me. I want to watch the players and how they develop and see how they fare in the preseason, that will be the key thing for me.

I want them to do better than last season's debacle, that's for sure, but we'll just have to see. Mougey has made some really positive moves to shore up problematic issues on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, but nothing counts until we see positive results. I know I'm probably in the minority about it, but I don't think that Woodhead will have a lot of patience if there aren't some positive effects right out of the box.

Craig Collins's avatar

It's not often that we disagree, Mike, but we do on this. Of course, with Woody, anything is possible, but imo if he's capable of learning and has learned anything at all, it's that firing the HC during the season is a HUGE NO-NO. He would probably never get any qualified coach to even interview. If the Jets struggle badly out fo the gate, Woody should just bite his tongue, lip or whatever it takes and accept it, as it would at least most likely put the Jets in prime position to get the QB they want in next year's draft, and that along with Woody showing restraint and the other positives, could wind up getting the Jets a quality HC next year. IMO the other thing that Woody should definitely do if he winds up having to fire Glenn, is to allow Mougey and/or Spielman to hire the new HC. Woody can meet him of course, but Woody needs to learn that he is his own worst enemy and that he should stay out of the hiring process and let those he has hired to basically run the team do their jobs.

Craig, I agree to a point. In season firings are awkward. Rarely rewarded with significant success. On the other hand there have been several occasions where the majority of the fan base couldn’t take even another day of being fed the same old tired BS like “we have to wear it!” We have to own it”! We have to be better”! Listening to Robert Saleh’s post game interviews were insufferable! Obviously the performance results weren’t good but at least I only had to listen to him only half a season😂

Mike Z's avatar

You make a lot of sense, but we are talking about Woodhead, so you never know what's going to happen. All we can do is observe what's going on in TC and preseason to get at least a general idea of how things look.

Craig Collins's avatar

Thanks! Yes, unfortunately, Woodhead is liable to do anything. To date he's shown little signs of learning anything or growing as an owner. We all just have to hope (and pray) that he has and will stay out of the way and allow Mougey and Spielman to guid the team to the right decisions and moves.

Ron Alexander's avatar

Geeez David🤦🏼‍♂️ Dillon Gabriel🤬 Unless I missed one there are zero munchkin QB fans in this group.😂 No thanks. As for our CB1 situation based on his play last season I’m not convinced Brandon Stephens deserves that distinction 🤔. Very inconsistent in coverage with zero interceptions? Did he even deflect a pass last season? And the very thought of Andre Cisco even making this team is alarming. He was absolutely horrible in every facet last season. Wright,AZ Thomas and Ponds offer our best shot at the corner spots in my opinion. I still think the Safety/LB positions (other than QB and depth) are my biggest concerns. Not sure how most here feel about Braylon Allen but as of today I’m a skeptic. If he gets hurt again during camp or early this season I think his career may be brief. He’s got talent for sure. Big,fast strong guy. But can he take a hit? Maybe the Toledo kid ( Chip Trayanum) ends up beating him out?

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Oh I agree Ron. I saw his name mentioned with the Jets over the weekend alongside the recently released Pavia. My response to both was no thanks

Ron Alexander's avatar

David, Oh, I understand you’re not advocating for him but I’m making my point clear how I feel about some of these guys! 😂 Andre Cisco is another non favorite. He hasn’t been any good in over 3 years now.

Craig Collins's avatar

Great post, Ron! I totally agree on Gabriel, Stephens, Cisco, and Allen.

In terms of the starting CBs, I think it should be a totally open 4-way competition for the two spots. Stephens shouldn't be guaranteed anything. Forget the past. They all should have a clean slate, and the two starters should be the two guys who are consistently the best in TC and preseason.

I was shocked and disappointed when they re-signed Cisco. Hopefully, his struggles last year were due to Wilks and his scheme, but I doubt it since he was allowed to walk from Jacksonville (or whichever his previous team was) in FA. There should be some decent S prospects available in the camp cuts or for low-round pick swaps. Otherwise, I'm not concerned with the S position. I think Belton is underrated. Moore has shown some real potential, and I think Payne has a ton of potential.

I wanted the Jets to draft Allen, and was excited when they did, but he has been a huge disappointment imo. The one thing he has going for him are his youth, and size. If he has made or can make the transition both physically and mentally to being a power back rather than a scatback, great. If not, then I'd love to see Trayanum or someone blow him away in TC and take his spot.

Ron Alexander's avatar

Agreed! Allens got to earn his spot this season! Most Jets fans are assuming he’s a lock! I agree on your 4 corner operations too!

Finally we will have some real stuff to talk about. Other than here, the reports have been speculation and made up drama for clicks. Thank you David for all the work you do to provide as much relevant information as you can during the NFL slow period. I agree that AG’s seat isn’t as hot as a lot of people think. If you look at what appears to be the plan, the Jets have young players on both sides of the ball with some Vets mixed in, if you look at the coaching on both sides of the ball there are young coaches and Vets mixed in. I like this approach and think we are headed for a much better season with competitive football and being in the hunt down the stretch.

So when do we resume Monday-Friday chats? I was hoping we were back to that regular schedule….

Bobber's avatar

Actually there is nothing really to write about until the pads are on.

Unfortunate for the whole Jets Way world, we have wrote and commented on every Jet item since we had a 3 month jump on the league by getting eliminated on Halloween.

We are all suffering from JOSS, Jet Off Season Syndrome

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Yeah once things start to pick up a little we'll head back to the usual Monday-Friday routine. There wasn't a great deal for yesterday morning but this mornings one is quite packed. So it may be like that a little bit until we really get into the meat and bones of this training camp.

Bobber's avatar

And here I am all morning waking up the neighbors roosters as I wrote today’s thoughts, lol

Jeff Henthorn's avatar

And so it begins. In a cap era, every team has holes. Mougey inherited a team with so many issues and he has worked to find some possible answers. Next year is key in the ongoing rebuild. Three number ones to add to the mix and hopefully the development of past picks. The remaining holes include two that are gigantic: void at long term QB1, and a head coach who failed in every way possible. Yet the coach is given another chance - why? Woody's money is on the line and it is too soon to change direction, particularly when Woody's goal is to get a franchise QB and to achieve this players can develop but the team needs to lose enough to get a high pick. AG can do this with his super powers.

As to QB, for this year and last year reclamation projects were selected. Last year's project failed and we have to see how Geno plays out. One tell on this rebuild is the refusal to spend resources on healthy, younger viable backup QBs. Almost guaranteed that older reclamation projects will falter or get hurt. The backups will play and last year the room was empty. Come on, who else but the Jets start a UDFA QB. This year same emptiness with a new 4th round QB in the mix. This is the best we can do? Maybe this is all part of a plan for a tank without being too visible. We know Woody can plan, to whit: remove fake turf, plant grass, get world cup - play, then remove grass and install fake turf. Why - Money to be earned.

Wow, darker than I planned.

Great article to start the week, David!

On the injury front, I'm thankful that it's not worse, but I'm confused about Baron. I don't know if this is a new injury or if he has never recovered from his injury in week 14 last season. It was a knee injury, but I've not been able to find out if it was an ACL MCL both or what exactly, or if he had surgery. If he had surgery, I would think that he should be healed and well by now. If the injury was bad enough to go on IR, it seems to me that he would have had surgery. Is this just some residual tightness or soreness, what exactly is the issue? He can't afford to miss much time. Reading about it on JetsX Factor was frustrating. They made the comment that he was a "disappointment" last season. Really? He was a 5th round pick. How many 5th round picks usually see action in their rookie season except maybe on STs???? He was a 5th round pick for a reason. I know the Jets' D and pass rush was awful last season and they were desperate, but still for him to get activated and actually play is a good sign to me, not a negative, and certainly not a disappointment.

I'm a little concerned about Sweat. Based on what I've read, he frequently shows up out of shape, and the NFI designation is often used for players who aren't in shape. This day and age, it's inexcusable for an NFL player to show up to TC out of shape. This isn't the 1960s, where the NFL was still just a part-time gig.

Excellent job on the TC position battles. I agree that the Jets' backup QB and K may not presently be on the roster. I would add that at least hopefully, their backup C and maybe OG isn't on the roster either if they plan on leaving both Tippman and Parham at OG in the even of injury to Myers. I'd rather the backup not be Klubnick, but if he truly proved that he was ready and plays at a high level, it would be exciting. IMO the safer course of action would be to add a QB like Will Levis either via FA or a low-round pick swap towards the end of TC. Levis is nothing special, but at least he's young, still has some upside, and could possibly serve as the bridge QB next year until the rookie is ready to start.

I think there could be a couple of others however, that should prove very interesting, if not exciting. One is the battle between Mitchell and Cooper for the #2 WR spot. Another is the starting DT spots. Will it be Briggs and Sweat? Phillips and Sweat? Onyemata and Sweat? Some other combination? Or even Darrell Jackson and one of the others? The backup OG spot battle could be interesting as well. Mitchell can play OG, and then the Jets have Hayes who was one of the last players cut last year coming out of TC, Fornadel who saw some action during the season, Levao who also saw some action, there's former Saint Landon Young who I think has played every position on the OL, and then the rookie Cooper. Will Cooper get a redshirt season, or could he show enough early to win that backup spot? In terms off flexibility/versatility, in theory it sounds great if Young won the job, but supposedly he wasn't very good with the Saints. Will a new scheme and OL Coach be able to produce different results with him?

I wish there was one more huge competition to watch at C, but sadly, there isn't. The Jets should have grabbed Pocic, and in fairness, maybe they tried and were rebuffed, but heading into this season with Myers as the starter again is a negative mark against both Glenn and Mougey. I love Mougey's work so far, and every GM makes mistakes, but imo this could be a fatal one. I just don't understand why they feel so confident in him. I know that they had a lot of holes, and it wasn't a great draft for Centers. I also know that they didn't draft just for need. Maybe they would have if there had been better options at C. Perhaps if Cooper shows a lot early, they can flip Tippman back to C or to LG, and let Parham and Myers compete in TC.

I like your Dark Horses as well, David. Those are the 3 I'd probably have picked, although Mory Bamba might have replaced Trayanum. I like Payne's potential, and I think he will see some playing time this season in spite of there being more talent and his being a 7th round pick. I would love to see the Jets add a true power back who can push the pile, but at who's expense? Breece isn't going anywhere. Nwangwu shouldn't go anywhere unless he gets injured. Davis has been consistently good. Barring injury to one of them, the only player I could Trayanum replacing is Allen. He's done the least to date in his NFL career. Hopefully, he has made the mental adjustment and will run like a power back in TC and preseason, but if not, even though he's too young to give up on in one hand, I have little patience in or hope for him to prove himself, so it wouldn't bother me if Trayanum took his place on the roster.

The Jets are fortunate in that they have Nwangwu and Williams, but if an injury were to occur, they have two players who were very good return in college, Lacy and Pritchett. That could be a determining factor for one of them making the roster. Another factor is whether Tim Patrick and get and stay healthy, and how both Cooper and Mitchell look in TC. If Patrick struggles either due to injury or age or if one of Cooper and Mitchell struggle at all, or if either of Sadik and Taylor struggle, then they might lean towards Malik McClain. Jelani Woods could also be a factor there, as I'm sure they'd want at least one, if not two taller/bigger receivers for the Red Zone. IMO it will be interesting to see how of that plays out and how much potential, if any, McClain and Lacy have for the NFL.
