Good morning.
Last year the Jets won four in a row before seeing the bottom fall out of their season losing their final six games. On Monday night against one of the worst defences in football, Nathaniel Hackett and the Jets will have the opportunity to win their 4th game in a row for back-to-back seasons.
The Jets’ defence will have their work cut out, but I back them to play any team tough and the Chargers are no exception. But you feel as though the offence is going to need to put up 20+ points to win this game. We may sound like a broken record, but it all comes down to converting on third down and in the red zone. The Jets are currently ranked 32nd in both categories, and that won’t cut it over a full season.
Some more details have surfaced over the Jets transfer deadline day according to Brian Costello and the New York Post. According to their sources, the Jets enquired about Mike Evans and Davante Adams but were told they were not available for a trade, neither got moved so that makes sense. Hunter Renfrow was available, but the Jets were looking to add an outside receiver rather than a slot receiver. They also had conversations with the Vikings over Ezra Cleveland but decided he didn’t match the system the Jets operate. The Jets were willing buyers, but there weren’t many willing sellers.
The Jets worked out DT Perrion Winfrey yesterday. Winfrey was a 4th-round pick of the Browns out of Oklahoma in 2022 but lasted just 12 months in Cleveland. He’s had two legal issues and served a 2-game ban this year. One of those was a misdemeanour assault charge in Harris County, Texas in April 2023, and in July he was under investigation for allegedly pulling a gun on a woman and threatening her in Cleveland. He played 342 snaps for Cleveland in 2022 with 7 pressures and 0.5 sacks, he wasn’t overly effective against the run according to PFF who gave him a 36.0 grade.
Congratulations to Thomas Morestead who was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. My article for the Jets UK site is on the Jets’ special teams unit so keep your eyes peeled for that one.
The Jets continued to tweak parts of their roster - They signed offensive lineman Chris Glaser to the active roster from the Cowboys practice squad, he’s been with the Jets before and was a solid performer at Virginia helping the Cavaliers to the 3rd best offence in all of college averaging over 500 yards a game. They also signed DL Bruce Hector to the practice squad and released DL Elerson Smith from the practice squad.
Duane Brown’s practice window will be opened this week, meaning the Jets have 21 days to activate him.
Saleh said the Jets have three options at centre moving forward. Joe Tippmann if he’s healthy, and Saleh wouldn’t confirm he’ll be ready for Monday. Xavier Newman who filled in against the Giants, and Chris Glaser who’s just been signed from the Cowboys practice squad.
Player/Coach Quotes
“I just want to play football. I didn’t play football for two years, so I don’t really give a damn where I’m at.” - Becton on potentially moving back to RT to make room for Brown.
"A freakish athlete and I think as he continues to evolve in his career, obviously you'd love for him to be a left tackle. But where we are at right now, we just got to make sure the best five are on the field, somehow, some way." Saleh on Becton after indicating that Duane Brown is one of the top-5 linemen on the Jets.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen. Whatever happens, I’ll be the best player I can be.” Duane Brown on whether he’ll play LT or RT
Power Ranking Update
"The Jets' social media team had a little fun at my expense Sunday, and there's absolutely something to be said for this squad's unwillingness to quit until the clock hits zero. It's a big reason why the Jets are above .500. But let's be real: They were more than lucky to win, in OT, against a Giants team with negative passing yards. The chances of that type of lightning striking again come down to slim and none."
“The Jets were dealt a cruel hand, losing Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles on the fourth play of the season. Not only was it an emotional blow to the team, but the Jets had to reinvent their offence for backup Zach Wilson. It hasn't been pretty -- the Jets are 27th in scoring (126) and 31st in total yards (1,913) -- but they've managed to win four games with Wilson -- who has thrown for 1,337 yards and five touchdowns. Statistically, the former No. 2 overall pick has made only small improvements from last season, but he's more mature and more confident than a year ago. The Jets will ride Wilson the rest of the way ... unless Rodgers makes a miraculous recovery. He says he's ahead of schedule in his rehab and that his goal is to play again this season.”
The Athletic - 21st - Last week 14th
“The Jets held the Giants to 194 yards Sunday, but they gained only 251 themselves. Somehow, a team that includes Breece Hall was led in rushing by Zach Wilson. The Jets are allowing 4.8 yards per play, which ranks fourth in the NFL, but unless Aaron Rodgers makes a miraculous recovery, it might not matter. Wilson completed 47 percent of his passes Sunday. He’s 31st in the league in completion percentage (58.3) for the season.”
CBS Sports - 12th - Last week 15th
“They have a winning record. Yes, a winning record. They beat the Giants in a game they shouldn't have won, but they found a way.”
Fox Sports - 16th - Last week 17th
Let's give the Jets credit for climbing above .500 and forget anything else that happened against the Giants. They won, but it feels like everyone else watching that game lost. I'm not jumping them up four spots due to that performance, but they are riding a three-game win streak, and they did find a way to beat Philly.
One thing became clear yesterday, the Jets were really looking for help at outside receiver. They didn’t fish in shallow waters either, there may have been a conversation with Cleveland for the Donovan Peoples-Jones, but the two they really prioritised were Tampa’s Mike Evans and Raiders Davante Adams.
