☀️ Good morning ☕
Another day and another piece from the Athletic on the dysfunctional Jets. It’s strange that all these sources are willing to talk, but only to the Athletic.
I’m not going to spend too much time on it as The Athletic like to change their story on a weekly basis as NYJ Matt points out in this tweet.
Is Woody Johnson a problem for the Jets? Absolutely. Do I believe that he nixed a trade for Jerry Jeudy based on a madden rating? No, no I don’t.
Mainstream media around football is no longer about the game. It’s about rumour and conjecture. It’s tabloid, it’s gossip columns, it’s glossy mag exposes. I don’t really have a lot of time for it, so let’s turn our focus to another head coaching candidate, Joe Brady!
🟢 Brian Costello instantly debated parts of the Athletic article confirming that Denver rejected the deal for Jerry Jeudy because they weren’t willing to accept Allen Lazard and a 4th round pick. He then brought up madden ratings but he wasn’t using them to stop a deal and he didn’t stop the deal at all. Like I said on X last night “Let's be honest. Woody probably made a throwaway comment after Denver rejected it like "My son said his rating on Madden sucked anyway" and Russini has taken that and created, Woody nixed the deal because his son told him Jeudy's Madden rating was bad.” It’s just one of the reasons I can’t take that article seriously.
⚫ The Jets announced that they’d completed a job interview with Jim Nagy, someone who wasn’t on my list. Nagy has been the executive director of Reese's Senior Bowl since 2018 and is responsible for its football and business operations and his contact list is probably as long as War & Peace. I love that the Jets are exploring different avenues and interviewing a broad range of candidates. Nagy worked as a scout for 18 years in the NFL. Through his executive career he was with 3 different franchises that went to 6 Super Bowls, winning 4 of them. So he certainly knows what winning looks like. I’ll write a piece on him next week as I kind of love his resume, as long as he brought a cap specialist with him.
🟢Garrett Wilson was asked about his long-term future with the Jets and it was actually very positive - "I don't know, man," the 2022 first-round pick said. "I just go about my day ... wherever my feet are at. If they [extend my contract], that would be a blessing. It would be awesome. I love the Jets. At the end of the day, they were the ones that believed in me. But, yeah, I can't be worrying about that. I have to go out and finish these three games the right way." - A lot of people took that “I don’t know” comments and turned it into a negative. But when someone says that the Jets extending him would be a “blessing” and “awesome” and that he “loves the Jets”, well I can’t see that as anything other than a huge positive. Extending him should be one of the first things a new GM does.
⚫The Jets are looking relatively healthy going into the matchup on Sunday. MC2 seems unlikely to play but Williams was at least doing work to the side, similar to how Breece Hall worked last week. Hopefully Williams plays.
Back in July while we were previewing the AFC East I wrote the following about the Buffalo Bills with my green-tinted glasses shining bright in the summer sun.
“I don’t think even the most optimistic of Bills fans can honestly say that they believe the team improved over the off-season. Instead of extending their lead you get the feeling that they’ve fallen back into the pack and potentially behind it.”
How wrong I was. Last year the Bills won the AFC East with an 11-6 record. This season they’re going to win the AFC East with at least 11 wins. Right now they’re 11-3 and they have the Patriots twice and the Jets. Chances are they’ll finish at 14-3.
So not only did they not fall back to the pack, but they’ve extended their lead.
Even with Josh Allen, I thought the loss of Diggs and Morse would mean that the Bills took a huge step back on offense. So let’s see about that:
