Good morning! ☕
We’re into our final week of pre-season preparation as we hurtle towards the season. If there was ever a time to get healthy, it’s in the next 2-3 weeks.
Will Corey Davis make it to week one? He’s still away dealing with a personal matter and has now missed notable time this pre-season. The Jets can save €10.5 million by cutting him, but maybe more importantly they can swap out a player who will be 29 before the end of the season, on the last year of his deal for a promising youngster like Jason Brownlee. I’m not saying I would definitely do that, but I think Corey’s status is important to watch over the next few weeks.
We’ve had a lot of subscribers join TJW this week, so a warm welcome to everyone. Get stuck into the comments and if there is any content you want to see, let me know.
Today we’ve got a health update, a great quote from AR on Becton, my take on if the Jets should carry Tim Boyle and then finishing with some good lengthy quotes from the coach.
🚑 Let’s start with all the good injury news we received yesterday:
Joe Tippman’s knee injury is minor and he should be fine for week one.
AVT returned to practice, participating in team drills.
Laken Tomlinson returned to practice and participated in team drills.
Breece Hall was cutting in team drills and looked very healthy.
Linebacker Chazz Surratt returned to practice.
Duane Brown is expected to be cleared to return today.
Israel Abanikanda will be out for about two weeks, but nothing serious.
Jeremy Ruckert is back in practice after recovering from his AC joint injury.
It can’t all be perfect, here are a few negatives on that front:
Carl Lawson was still absent with a back problem.
Corey Davis is still absent dealing with a personal matter
Wes Schweitzer limped out of practice today.
Kenny Yeboah will be out for a couple of weeks with a hamstring
Another key point from practice is that Mekhi Becton was taking first-team reps at right tackle. I’m now convinced that he’ll be the starting RT when the season starts. Huge week and game for Becton this week.
So by the end of this week, the offensive line practising should be:
LT - Duane Brown
LG - Laken Tomlinson
C - Connor McGovern
RG - Alijah Vera-Tucker
RT - Mekhi Becton
This is pretty much the line we predicted at the start of training camp, although I thought Joe Tippmann would have overtaken Connor, and had he not injured himself, I think there’s a good chance this was the week that happened.
Kenny Yeboah missing the end of camp may put his roster spot in jeopardy. I had him making the team, but I’m debating that now.
The practice was a padless one, so not much to report in terms of the action on the field.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"I like Mekhi a lot. He's a guy that, like all of us — we want to feel like we belong. We want to feel like we're part of this thing, part of the group. Whether by his own doing or just the way things fell he might not have felt that way. And that's normal. When you're on injured reserve, and I've been a couple of times, it's a tough place to be. You feel isolated from the team, you're not travelling as much, you're not in the meetings. So I think it's been a conscious effort by all of us to make him feel like he's part of this thing. He's so talented, he's humongous and he's athletic for a man who is 6-8, 350. I'm excited about seeing him out there. He's a big teddy bear on the inside. I'm enjoying getting to know him. He's a fierce competitor on the field and I'm excited about having him out there."
Should the Jets carry Tim Boyle on the active roster?
