Expect two Practice Squad promotions, in Sam Equavoen LB & Jake Hanson OG/ C, replacing Schweitzer & Barnes. With Schweitzer on IR wouldn’t mind Signing McGovern next week. I would have bet the house that HR , would have shown up on Saturday . Agree, JD needs to stand firm, even if the Jets get zero sacks tonight. JD is in his contract year as a GM, the league will be watching how Douglas handles this. Don’t understand Haason’s end game, can’t imagine a trade.

Watched some football yesterday, calming the addiction. Patriots, Dolphins, & Bills won and the Titans lost all in close games. Not a big uniform guy, but the Giants throwback uniforms were an embarrassment. Giants in for a tough season with their 40 million dollar QB. Don’t understand QB pricing, it’s just bizarre. Dak Prescott just got a four year 240 million dollar contract. Two 55 million dollar a year QB’s lost yesterday in Trevor Lawrence & Joe Burrow. While Jacobi Brissett who makes 8 million, and Sam Darnold who makes 10 million were big winners. Darnold looked good for the Vikings, speaks to Offensive minded Coaching, and a superior supporting cast. Happy for Sam, look at the WR’s he had with the Jets, resurrected his career with a year under Shanahan and the 49ers.

Good Morning Jets fans.

Hey JO don’t you think maybe Sam getting older and more accustomed to the NFL has helped him as much as coaching. He has been all over the place and with different coaches. My thought is how many high drafted rookie QBs fail after being thrust into starting roles and how many lower drafted QBs that sit and learn for a few years make it.

Expand full comment

There seems to be a shift in GM’s thinking, teams seem to see the value of letting early drafted QB’s sit for a while, rather than get shell shocked.. Minnesota’s plan before his injury, was I believe was to sit McCarthy behind Darnold. Copy cat league, Green Bay has been very successful with grooming QB’s, by letting them sit. The financial and Fan Base pressures of sitting a QB, drafted in the top 10, is significant.

You can't do it any better than the Packers did. Favre then Rodgers and now Love. And all with long successful careers. I am projecting for Love. By the way, to me it seems like Schweitzer is a walking injury. I wud welcome McGovern back.

I don't get JO's and your wanting McGovern back. He was THE worst center in the NFL his last season with the Jets, and actually was better that season than the one before. He is toast. Bringing him back would be a disaster imo. I don't think I'd even want him back if the Jets' OL started dropping like flies like they did last year.

Maybe u r right. I am not an OL analytics expert :).

I'm no OL expert, either. Just very opinionated! As JO responded to me, you both could be right. Perhaps McGovern's poor play was more a result of who was on either side of him and their poor play, and not so much his own.

I think maturing definitely has to help, but imo there's no way that's on the same level as getting good coaching and a good scheme fit. I agree with your premise if it's that too many young QBs are thrust into starting too soon. They need time to adjst to the NFL, to fix whatever technique issues they need to get straightened out, learn the offense, and learn to read more complex NFL Ds.

In terms of Sam, I think he would still be awful if he hadn't gone to SF and received good coaching/learned under Shanahan, and he has good coaching where he is now. He could have sat on the bench with either the Jets or the Panthers, and imo it would have made little difference in his level of play.

Watched a few games yesterday….live, not recorded! Agree about Reddick, I don’t understand his strategy. What does he expect? Does he think the NYJ will agree to a multi year 25 milllion per contract to offset the multi-millions in fines that he is accruing? If his holdout lasts long enough and he doesn’t play much this year, there is no mult-year contract next year. Given his production he is underpaid but his approach is not going to work. He’s not like Trent Williams who held out but was a known entity, he has to earn his payday!

Jets were the only buyers at 14.5 million. HR has overestimated his value. This from the Nickel & Dime Dept., Jets save 700 thousand in CAp space every week that Haason holds out, Jets May not be in a hurry to sign the guy. Zero sacks tonight doesn’t change HR’s leverage.

Yippee!! Maybe the Jets will have an extra 8-10 million to spend on long term contracts for Sauce, JJ, Hall, Wilson and others!

Good call on the promotions of Eguavoen and Hanson. I'll be surprised if that doesn't happen.

Gotta disagree with you on bringing McGovern back. The guy is toast. It doesn't matter that he knows the scheme (if he remembers it) or how much experience he has. He just flat out sucks. Good guy, bad player. I'd rather roll Newman-Johnson (or is it Johnson-Newman? LOL). He's better than McGovern, and who knows what kind of shape McGovern is in. IMO that ship has sailed. He would be the very last guy I'd look to bring back.

I agree with you on QB salaries. Not that long ago, RB salaries were crazy high. The next thing we knew, the importance of RB in offensive schemes became much less. I wonder if we'll see a return within a year or two to "3 yards and a cloud of dust" minimalizing the importance of QBs, and having the effect of lowering their salaries. The kind of money they're getting now is just not sustainable, and the cap can't keep just leaping up year after year. They've about priced our all but the wealthiest fans as it is.

Expand full comment

55-60 million isn’t sustainable, QB salaries as well as WR have almost doubled. The cap isn’t growing nearly as fast. Before long QBs will price themselves out of the market. They will be protected by less costly offensive linemen and the 60 million QBs will end up on IR.

Ultimately the price structure will work itself out. A couple of 60 million busts or injuries will solve the problem. If I was an owner, no way I’d give a 6 year contract for 360 million total. In baseball sure, the injury risk is less.

QB salaries are truly not sustainable

Expand full comment

If the NFL does return to 3 yards and a cloud of dust, they will be ahead of the curve for a change, because they have the perfect RB corps for it and right now a great OL for it. I love seeing the QB throwing the ball a lot. It makes for a more exciting, but longer game, but don't see how the level of play on teams can stay high with QB salaries taking up a huge chunk of the cap.

I thought of you when I wrote this post at 5:15 AM, this morning, and I was a little reluctant to bring McGovern up, but I truly feel at Vet min, bringing McGovern on is a solid move. We disagree, I Understand. If I were going to rank 64 Centers, McGovern would come in at 27- 37 , his bad performance is directly linked to Tomlinson, the random 6 guys that played Right Guard, a dysfunctional Offensive Line Coach, and a clueless Offensive Coordinator. Rodgers likes him, and Tippman could use a mentor. All that being said, I would play Newman over McGovern, we are looking at tertiary depth here

Expand full comment

5:15 AM???? OMG I didn't know that hour of the day still existed! LOL

Please don't be reluctant to bring up McGovern or anything else because you think I will disagree. Heck, I'm an opinionated old-fart and could be wrong, and no one said that we or any of us always have to agree.

You could be totally right that McGovern's poor play had a lot to do with the players on either side of him. I hadn't really thought about it in that way. Some of my response was just hyperbole, anyway, so as long as McGovern is here as tertiary depth, and Newman would play before him, I'd be fine with that.

You have been consistent on your valid opinions on McGovern. Would rather have strong opinions than no opinions. Kindly note that folks are thinking about your posts at 5 AM

LOL I'm sorry if you're thinking about my posts at 5:00 AM, my friend.

I just hope that my consistency isn't a foolish consistency, because that is the hobgoblin of small minds!!! I also don't want to be a nattering nabob of negativity when it comes to McGovern.

Actually it’s the best part of my day , I find your posts informative , insightful, and take on a wide array of football related topics. Then I get Bobber’s post which could be classified as literature. Bobber is hilarious, but he is also a Jet History teacher, has his unique spin on everything and anything related to football and organizations. Bobber will always make you think, and consider grabbing that second cup of coffee. I have very good mornings

It’s safe to say, that millions upon millions of people pray for instant wealth when they play the lottery.

Taking into consideration that Where’s Waldo#7s holdout is probably the most ill conceived planned holdout in NFL history since Jay Berwanger’s. What is Waldo praying for.

Not only was Berwanger the first Heisman Winner but also the first number one pick in the first NFL draft. He never played a down in the NFL.

Berwanger’s brilliant plan posted below.

What could he possibly be praying for.

Where’s Waldo #7s leverage has more zeros attached to it than the extra zeros he expects from the Jets.

Evidently the only possible thing that he is praying for is for the Jets to get no sacks or pressures the next couple of weeks or Heaven forbid injuries to key players. That can be the only motive for his idiotic holdout.

If his insistence is to stand tough, then after 6 games it will be Deja Vue all over again next year except he will be a year older on the wrong side of thirty.

Saleh in his exuberance said that once this is resolved, the team will welcome him with open arms.

I can positively tell you that there will be one team member that won’t be welcoming him with open arms and that is the player who will get cut to open up the roster spot.

In 1936, Berwanger was the first player ever drafted into the National Football League in its inaugural 1936 NFL draft.[11] The Philadelphia Eagles selected him, but did not think they would be able to meet his reported salary demands of $1,000 per game.[12] They traded his negotiating rights to the Chicago Bears for tackle Art Buss.[13]Berwanger initially chose not to sign with the Bears in part to preserve his amateur status so that he could compete for a spot on the U.S. team for the 1936 Summer Olympics in the decathlon.[14]

After he missed the Olympics cut, Berwanger and Bears' owner George Halas were unable to reach an agreement on salary; Berwanger was requesting $15,000 ($329,353 in 2023) and Halas' final offer was $13,500 ($296,417 in 2023).[15]Instead, he took a job with a Chicago rubber company and also became a part-time coach at the University of Chicago.[16]Berwanger later expressed regret that he did not accept Halas' offer.

Great story, I like the “regrets” you cannot replace lost time, or use a lost season as a leverage point for his next contract!

Never heard that story about Berwanger before. What a moron! I get it that the NFL was in its infancy, but I'd be surprised if he made $13,500 with that Chicago rubber comany. That said, it might be fitting (or Karma) that that arrogant prick wound up working for a rubber company!

I do not want Reddick at all. I hope this holdout ends his NFL career.

Sticking to my 27-24 Jets Victory ! I actially though the games were kind of bad yesterday - Was hoping the Bills would lose; If The Cardinals had a competent OC they would of. It does looks like Allen hurt his hand. The Giants just stink and showed up with their Montreal Canadien uniforms on. Turned into Borwns/Cowboys another stinker just t 'hear' how Bardy sounded - after about 10 min had enough of that and he wasnt that good - granted first game but his voice doesnt lend itself to doing color.

Will Mac play ? He is questionable. Through TC McCaffery was held out due to a calf injury. Recently it’s been a calf + an Achilles injury. Achilles just scares me 😱, 49ers have their season at stake need to be cautious

Having had Achilles problems one overstretch with increased force on the tendon and you are done for the year. Granted these are professional athletes and have physical therapists etc, however by the same token, the physical demands on their joints/tendons by being a professional athlete are greater!

If CMC is limited or doens't play, then I think the Jets win 28-7 (SF's lone TD coming on a KOR or a blown coverage on Aiyuk), and Purdy will be forced to throw a lot. As a result he will get sacked 5-6 times, even with SF's OL.
