Good morning! 🇳🇱☕
For the first time in a long time, I had the desire to go back and re-watch the game, after 5 losses in a row and a woeful 13-10 win against the Giants, the Jets offered dare I say entertainment.
For those who missed yesterday’s newsletter, I’m currently in Amsterdam enjoying the Christmas markets with the family, so TJW will be a little all over the place this week. But we’ll be back to normal scheduling from Monday onwards.
🟢 Zach Wilson’s passer rating of 117.9 was the highest mark of his career. It was also the third time he eclipsed 300 passing yards.
⚪ Josh Allen, C.J. Stroud, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts combined to complete 53% of their passes for 810 total yards and 3 touchdowns to 8 interceptions. Incredible.
🟢 Thomas Morestead had his 6th punt downed inside the 5-yard line against Houston, that’s a career-high for him and the most in football this year.
⚪ Solomon Thomas recorded his 4th sack of the year on Sunday, that’s a career high. He’s having a really underrated season.
🟢 The Jets recorded 10 pass defences on Sunday, they now have the 4th most passes defended in the league with 65. Very active hands by the linebackers and secondary.
⚪ The Jets receivers had 0 drops and 4 contested catches yesterday, that’s how you help out your QB. Jets have dropped far too many passes this season.
🟢 Mekhi Becton was tagged for 3 sacks yesterday and 5 pressures in total. Joe Tippmann and Laken Tomlinson each allowed a sack. Jake Hanso had a fine day allowing 3 pressures and 0 sacks.
⚪ The Jets’s defence recorded just one missed tackle…which is pretty insane considering the conditions.
🟢 DJ Reed was targeted 9 times and allowed 3 receptions with 3 PBU. In total, he allowed 20 yards into coverage.
⚪ Connor McGovern did indeed have season ending surgery. As a pending free agent and with Tippmann doing well, I think he'll be playing elsewhere next year. But if he wanted to come back on a low cost deal to be a backup at center and guard, I wouldn't hate it.
🟢 Robert Saleh was asked if Zach can play himself into the teams plans next season and he said “anything is possible”. This is a huge game for Zach on Sunday, as if he wins it…it may be the last one he plays this season as winning the game will keep the Jets faint playoff hopes alive.
⚪ There was a report this weekend which originated out of Utah that claimed Zach had been told by Saleh that the Jets would trade him this off-season, Saleh was asked about that report and he wouldn't confirm or deny it. Instead he said he wouldn't talk about private conversations.
I thought Zach Wilson was superb on Sunday, but on the second viewing…he was even better than I thought he was.
I’ve picked out a few plays that I loved from Zach because when we have the positives to focus on, why focus on anything else?
This is the kind of play that got Zach Wilson drafted #2 overall. Mekhi Becton should be buying him a steak dinner because this should be a sack based on how clean the LT gets beaten. But the awareness and mobility to spin away, and then that arm talent to throw back across his body to hit Garrett, I mean there is a lot to love there. He could have taken the easy completion to Ruckert underneath but saw the potential for a big play and took it. This is what a confident quarterback looks like.
