Thanks David - couple of things. While Greg the Leg is consistent - worried that he cant hit plus 50 yarders. While that woud be rare still could be key. IMO Cook is not signing with the Jets. Also worried about the LB room in case of injury. -

All very fair points there Steve. Greg missed his first kick yesterday and that was from around 52 yards. He's really gone downhill recently in terms of kicking from range, he's 44/80 on his career and he had a period where he went 15-20 over a three-year period, but 6-11 last year showed his limitations.

Zaire Barnes seems to be coming along nicely, but I don't love the depth either.

David, unless the camp report I read this week from one of the Jets' beat writers was mistaken, Greg had missed two kicks earlier in the week.

From Peter King on Payton

FROM PETER KING

I’m I think that is the understatement of July. As one head coach told me over the phone as we wound our way from the Jets to Steelers, “That crosses the line. Sean broke the code.” It’s one thing to say to Russell Wilson: I’ve got your back. Me and you against the world, Russ. It’s another thing to lay waste to a good coach not ready to be a head coach, Nathaniel Hackett, and to football people still in the Denver building (“20 dirty hands”). Just way over the line. In some ways, Payton may have put more pressure on Wilson, because he totally, unequivocally absolved him of all blame in the disastrous 2022 season. Now, if Wilson doesn’t revert to top-QB form, Payton has set himself and Wilson up as punching bags—even after walking his comments back.

Coaches in the league

Don’t want Saleh to forgive

Payton easily.

Mornin' ya'll,

Am I misremembering or has Sean Payton always been a bit of an a-hole? I know that he wasn't necessarily skunked with the bounty stink that Gregg (with three Gs) Williams was, but I don't get the impression that that sort of stuff happens in a locker room and the head coach isn't aware of it. Sean Payton shows a serious lack of class with those comments. Nobody wants to work with somebody whose mouth is always open. In a closed mouth, no flies enter. That is part of what I love about our dude Robert Saleh. He is definitely a talker, but it is always relentlessly positive stuff. I LOVE that. Those were my favorite coaches! The contrast between these two leaders (Saleh and Payton) couldn't be starker. Week five couldn't get here quickly enough.

It comes down to one thing. Sean Payton has always been an arrogant SOB, period. It's in his psychological makeup, and he has to do something to stir up the Broncos. Unfortunately, he picked the wrong things to say. I think there will be some, how shall I say it, pretty pissed-off Jets when week five rolls around.

If Cook signs, will it be Bye Bye Carter.

In beat reporters summaries of practices, a few of the names that they point out for continuing making plays are Tony Adams at safety. Zaire Barnes at linebacker and Jermaine Johnson,Deslin Alexandre and Will McDonald at defensive end.

What’s interesting about Alexandre, his history at Pittsburgh didn’t really show he was a good pass rusher and yet every day in practice he gets one. It wasn’t that long ago that Jet fans, including myself, were constantly bemoaning the fact that the Jets had no pass rushers.

On Payton stirring up a hornets nest, a lot to think about here.

Though not a football saying but totally appropriate here, “ You can never put the toothpaste back into the tube”

Now he is blaming having a couple of Lattes while speaking with a reporter.

If caffeine gets your mouth moving like that, you better not ever drink alcohol.

Are you a good coach, definitely, but without Drew Brees you would have been mediocre at best. Once Brees left, your team, with all that talent, dropped to 9-8. What did you do, you said goodbye. What’s a matter, you can’t score 35 points a game with Trevor Semian as your quarterback. I thought you were some kind offensive genius.

Russell Wilson was traded because not only were some of his skills eroding but he is a big time locker room divider.

There were always stories of how Pete Carroll pampered him. Two sets of rules, doesn’t work on any team.

Supposedly he bitched and moaned constantly about how Seattle ran their offense. At the end, Carroll pushed back.

Seattle smart organization, saw a problem, found a sucker big time, and dumped him.

Once Wilson got to Denver, it automatically hit the fan. The ownership and GM, I guess approved of him having an entourage on Denver’s complex 24/7. They had their own tent at training camp. That’s where Wilson spent his time. Yea, he is a real team builder. The Bronco players hated him from day one.

As far as Hackett goes, maybe he wasn’t dynamic enough to stop the shit show. There have been a lot of assistant coaches who bombed being HCs.

Wilson constantly complained about the offense and was a big time play changer in the huddle.

Hackett gave up play calling. The OC probably gave Wilson more of a free reign. Did they score more points yes, but they still lost games

Lastly, Denver gave up 5 draft picks and three players for Wilson. Then gave him a 4 year extension, at 140 million, 65 guaranteed.

I really don’t think the organization and the fans would have let Hackett bench Wilson.

Payton gets hired. First words out of his mouth, only Denver Bronco employees allowed into the Broncos complex.

Goodbye entourage, unfortunately from the tone of the article, he was pandering to Wilson.

See you in October, now that you gave the Jets a ton of bulletin board material. Did you really want to piss off Hackett’s best friend

Bobber, I'm curious where you read that Alexandre had gotten a sack every day at practice. I've been reading camp reports from two different Jets fan sites and from Twitter every day, multiple times, and I've only seen Alexandre's name mentioned yesterday, and maybe one other day for getting a sack. Maybe I need to upgrade my sources.

Expand full comment

I subscribe to the Athletic, Jet writer Zach Rosenblatt

Had a sack yesterday

From Wednesday practice 7/26/23

DE Deslin Alexandre: I’ve credited the undrafted rookie on a couple of sacks against the third-team offensive line throughout camp. Defensive line will be a tough position to break in but he could stick on the practice squad.

From Tuesday, first pad practice 7/25/23

• Some players I had getting “sacks:” Lawson, Barnes, defensive tackle Solomon Thomas, McDonald and defensive end Deslin Alexandre.

Saturday practice 7/22/23

• Other players I would’ve credited with sacks: Bryce Huff (for the third straight practice), defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson (twice) and undrafted rookie defensive end Deslin Alexandre, who got around Mekhi Becton to get to Zach Wilson. Becton also had a hard time with Huff — though that’s true of most offensive tackles in these settings given how fast Huff gets off the line.

Bobber , you need a bigger platform, outstanding analysis of Payton. If this tirade was calculated, it’s about defending Russell Wilson, and trying to give him a little rope at the beginning of the season before the fans turn on him. Russell’s skills are deteriorating and his personality is divisive, good luck. There is an argument to be made, that Senior Management of the Broncos undermined Hackett, with one of worst trades in NFL history, and their misguided support and treatment of Russell Wilson led to the team’s demise.

Is Carter gone ? Maybe. First , I like the approach that the Jets are taking toward Dalvin. Love that Woody was part of the full court press to sign Cook. Not a big DC fan but if Aaron wants him we get him. The fact that Cook is leaving this morning means the Jets will not overpay. We have a long way to go before Carter is gone. I think there is a strong possibility that Breece will start the season on IR or PUP. Carter could be with us until mid October. Curious to see the amount of reps that Carter & Knight play in Cleveland. Expect to see Crockett & a lot of Travis Dye

I don’t need a larger platform, I’m happy where I am.

At one time, I followed the four major sports. Stopped watching baseball when all of a sudden announcers stopped blasting players for not running out balls and other reasons. I stopped watching basketball when all of a sudden 1 1/2 steps turned into 3 1/2 steps for stars like Jordan plus other reasons. Hockey is the best playoff sport but like the saying goes, I went to a fight and there was a hockey game. Regular season is tedious, though their fan bases are diehard.

I read only pro football. Diehard Jet fan. When people asked me who I root for, my answer was always whoever my son plays for and the Jets. Pretty soon the answer will be, my granddaughters and the Jets.

Like I said I read a lot of football.

At one time, beat writers were very protective, now a days probably because of social media, a lot more true rumors appear.

One that festered for a few years, to be as blunt as I can be was that Russell Wilson was a dick teammate.

The only thing that kept the stories quite was the fact Seattle was winning.

One of the questions asked Payton at his introductory news conference was about Wilson and his entourage being all over the Broncos facility. His answer, “ I know nothing about that, the only people allowed on our complex, will be Bronco employees.

Right there, he lied. I’m a food salesman from New Jersey, I knew about the entourage. So not only is Payton a liar, he is also a dick.

I didn't think they would sign Cook this weekend. I think they will not do anything until they see Hall in game conditions. You can't make a proper decision until you see him run in a game, not a scrimmage. And I think that Cook wanted big $$$$$$, even at this point and signing him for anything over $4 million is a joke. He's looking for somewhere in the area of $8-10 million. His convo with Woody was probably more about massaging Cook to take a lower price, but that's just speculation on my part.

Mornin' ya'll,

I'm going to zig where everybody else is zagging this morning, by which I mean talking about the depth chart instead of Sean Payton's triflin'-a**. The depth chart, although it is essentially a bit of fan service, told us a couple of things that are worth noting. Of course, it's awesome that the Jets seem to have a ton of confidence in Tony Adams at FS. I think that will assuage a lot of us regarding the pecking order at safety. Of note, however, were a couple of technicalities on the offensive depth chart.

The first part that I found interesting is that they broke the TE group into two separate positions. That tells me that they see the TE position as two explicit roles. I'm guessing that one is the move role and the other is the in-line role. CJ Uzomah, as many of us already knew, was the in-line TE, with Conklin operating as the move TE. What is interesting, however, is that they've listed Jeremy Ruckert as the backup at move, instead of the backup at in-line (the same could be said of where they listed Zack Kuntz, for what it's worth). It's worth noting that this depth chart doesn't duplicate player names, so it is entirely possible that a guy like Ruckert is actually the preferred backup at both spots, but I found that interesting that, if they had to list him at one position, they listed Ruckert as a move TE.

The second part that I found interesting was regarding our WR corps. They listed three starting WR, yes. We all knew that that would be the outcome, considering almost all NFL teams, these days, operate out of 11 personnel as a base offense. The starters weren't, really, in doubt. We were always going to see Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis, and Allen Lazard. What is interesting, however, is that they, seemingly, are listing Garrett Wilson as a slot, as evidenced by the fellas they have backing him up (Mecole Hardman and Randall Cobb). I, for one, don't remember how Garrett was used last year with regards to him working out of the slot or outside. I do, however, think that there is something to how they list these guys on a depth chart, because there is intentionality to how they list these dudes. I could be reading WAY too much into it, but I find it fascinating! :)

Great points. It was the same for me. I don’t put a lot of stick in depth charts. Especially preseason depth charts. I think there’s a bit of gamesmanship to there charts. A good way to motivate a gut to pick up his effort is to list him lower than he actually is. A perfect guy to use for this tactic would be Mekhi Becton. He’s presently languishing with the two’s and three’s. If that’s truly where he will reside this year his future with the Jets will be brief.

hey David!

I'll tell ya what - one thing I can't tolerate is lazy reporting, and that's what's colored this payton foot-in-mouth issue. Many sources are reporting " Payton expresses regret over Jets, Hackett remarks ". I call bullshit, he did no such thing. His was one of those not-really-an-apology fake apologies. He grudgingly self-criticized that he spoke in such a way, but never, NEVER mentioned right there, at the podium, an explicit and direct leave-no-misunderstanding-about-it APOLOGY to Hackett or to the New York Jets. That is a full-on example of CLASSLESS TURD that Payton is.

I am old school - if you fuck up, insult someone in public, in front of others, then you man the fuck up, and make honest amends in the SAME VENUE. As my aunt used to say, you don't go taking a dump on the living room floor in a party, then say you cleaned up the bathroom after everyone's gone.

Here's what he did say - and he smeared Hackett again in his so-called "remorse":

> "so much dirt around that. There's 20 dirty hands... tolerated in the fricking training rooms, the meeting rooms." --- well, who runs the training and meeting rooms, the waterboy? No, the Coaches.

> "that Wilson hit a wall? Shoot, they couldn't get a play in. Not just Russell, it was poor OLine. Worst coaching jobs in the history" --- again, smearing Hackett.

> "I still had my fox hat on, not my coaching hat" --- No, Sean, you had your CLASSLESS MOUTH on.

> "a learning experience for me, I needed a bit more filter, more restraint. I regret that" --- NO SEAN, that is NOT REGRET, you are not directly apologizing to the TARGETS of your smear, you are simply regretting your CHOICE OF WORDS. And by not apologizing to Hackett, to Coach Saleh, JD, to the Jets, you have locked in your Pig Mouth onto your cooked QB, and made him, yourself and your TEAM a nice big fat TARGET for week 5 - cause we're comin' to town and we won't forget your shit character.

> Blaming "two lattes" for his behaviour. --- What an effin' cunt of a cuck he is!

> then, the cherry on top of the GreatDane sized shit pile of a fake apology - he INTENDED to reach out to both Hackett and Saleh to formally apologize at a later date. --- NO SEAN, like I said above, ya took a shit someone's living room floor, then ya CLEAN YOUR SHIT UP off that SAME FLOOR, and right there in front of the SAME GROUP OF FOLKS you originally crapped in front of.

Now, like i inferred above, to Hell with these reporting sites that call this, an apology. PFN actually states "Kudos to Payton for owning up to his mistake".

You know, I used a helluva lot a salty words above, so David, I hope you don't block this post. But man oh man - i really, really hope that Saleh, Hackett, the entire Jets team keeps this one Printed and come week 5, that our Jets give a Forceful, Clear and CRUSHING RESPONSE to this shitbag of a coach.

CGVet58

PS - and a nod to Bobber, yes ya "... can't put the toothpaste back in the tube." Or as I often heard in Boot Camp, ya "... can't put the shit back in the dog." Payton is definitely the latter example.
