Good morning!
We’re going to keep it nice and short today as we’ll have a bumper newsletter tomorrow on the final 53-man roster.
Some initial cuts have been made by the Jets, all of them largely expected. There will be tougher decisions made today. All NFL rosters need to be trimmed to 53 players by 4 p.m. EST today. Teams can then submit waiver claims tomorrow.
Just a reminder that a lot of the below is based on reports, the jets have only officially announced the cuts of Taumoepenu, Vigil and Senat.
Trey Dean - Probably the most surprising cut yesterday for me. I had him making my 53-man roster but predicted the Jets would cut him. Dean, a UDFA out of Florida had a very good pre-season. I’m calling him the Jason Pinnock of the cut process. Another safety who missed out due to the Jet’s love of Ashtyn Davis. We’ll see if that works out for them and I won’t be getting in too much of a tizzy about the 4th safety position…but I’m hoping he makes it through as I’m sure the Jets want him on the PS. Dean had 18 tackles, didn’t miss a tackle and didn’t allow a TD. He seemed to be in the right place at the right time and showed some good range in coverage.
Greg Senat - Another move where I had Senat on my final 53, but not on the projected Jets one. I thought Senat had a fine pre-season and after spending most of his life playing basketball, he’s finally starting to look technically ready for the NFL. Unfortunately, he’s approaching 30, and that will be held against him, despite some tackles playing into their late 30’s. I’d love to get Senat back on the practice squad, but I could see a tackle-needy team putting in a claim based on his athleticism and his pre-season performance. He was one of the highest-graded Jets run-blockers and while he had some pressures to his name, he didn’t allow a single sack while leading the Jets in pass-blocking snaps (96).
