Well, …..Mitchell sure can move! He gets open with ease. We haven’t had a guy like that in years. But he’s gotta come down with at least two of those 3 opportunities he had. He had 2 steps on Gonzalez who’s an outstanding corner. The ball was a bit under thrown which was why Gonzalez was able to catch up and make it a tough catch. Could it have been caught? Absolutely but it would have been an outstanding catch. The second miss was not a good pass. It was late and behind Mitchell. Again it would have required a Garrett Wilson like contortion maneuver to make that catch. And the final miss was the crosser he let go through his hands. He may have been screened by the LB underneath his position but that ball should have been caught. But I like the kid. The talent is clearly there. But catch the freak’n 🤬ball already. 😂
So I’m watching last nights post game and our two new WR’s really impressed me. Metchie is clearly a sharp kid. He’s very comfortable with the media intelligently answered questions and provided interesting thoughts. Mitchell took full responsibility for his inability to make those catches. That’s important. My hope is these two and maybe Williams are the featured receivers going forward. Playing Lazard, Reynolds or Johnson makes zero sense because none of them will be here next season.
I think Johnson would be worth keeping as the #5 or #6 WR. They'd have Wilson, Mitchell, Metchie, A. Smith, possibly a rookie, and Johnson. IMO they need a big-bodied WR who can block, and Tyler Johnson is a good blocker and he's made some big 1st down catches this season. He's also cheap. The only reason that I wouldn't bring Johnson back would be if Skinner looks close and could replace him.
Craig, Johnson as a depth piece,no problem. But for the balance of this season I want to see the younger players get the opportunity to to evaluate and hopefully improve so we have a good idea of who they are.
As for Metchie, he gives me Jericho Cotchery vibes. He’s a technician. A true possession receiver. He understands what the defense is trying to do. He understands leverage and knows how to defeat it. Mitchell had a rough day but he’s electric! He’s open from his first step. I’m rewatching the game ( I DVR every game and watch it at least twice which makes me a serious horror film fan😵💫) and I will watch the All-22 film as soon as it’s available. Man watching that first deep ball to Mitchell he beat Gonzalez from the jump. Had at least a step and a half on him. If the throw was on time it’s an easy catch and score because Gonzalez is not catching him.
On the 2nd "drop", Field's pass was horrible. If he had thrown it inside and led Mitchell just a little or hit him in stride, it would have been a TD imo. Mitchell also could have had a TD later when he beat Gonzalez and was in the end zone, but Fields' lame duck pass was woefully underthrown and hit Gonzalez in the back of his legs. Fields just flat out sucks and shouldn't even be on the playing field.
Based on Glenn’s remarks after the game, Fields is here to stay at least for this year.

Spot on Bobber, unfortunately the flaws are obvious and it seems we're going to have to just live with it until the end of the season where i think we'll see significant roster turnover.
I noticed how low the snaps were last night. They were down at Fields' feet at least 2-3 times. Myers has to go or be a backup next year. He sucks.
I was shocked that the DB that gave up the pass and then didn't touch the receiver on the ground was Brownlee. He had seemed like a smarter, better player than that. I knew he wasn't very good as an outside CB and would give up a lot a of receptions and get penalized 2-3 times a game, but I didn't know that he would just vapor lock and go completely stupid. He needs to play only in the slot.
I was royally pissed at Adams. Stiggers had an interception coming right into his hands, and the Patriot receiver was falling down behind him, and there was nothing he could do to stop Stiggers from getting a goal line interception, but here comes Adams flying in from the sideline and tries to make an over-the-shoulder interception and takes it away from Stiggers, then drops it. If I had been there last night with my Louisville Slugger, I'd be in jail today for knee-capping Adams. That's the thing that's so utterly maddening about the Jets. It's not just that they lose, but how they lose. They have to have the stupidest players in the NFL, with Fields chief among them. I'm sick of it! It's definitely a good thing I wasn't at the game with my Lousiville slugger. I'd most likely have gone after Fields and Glenn as well.
I mean let's be honest, if we truly want to tank to get a better draft spot, we keep throwing out Fields. If you don't want to tank, then you play Tyrod. If you want to truly experiment, you play Cook. Coach will never talk down on his players so you can't trust the pressers.
Someone said it yesterday, it's the OCs game more than Fields'. Well to me, the OC did enough to help his team and his team failed him. Bad throws/drops to AD Mitchell, penalties, bad reads, holding the ball too long, etc. It seems like every trick play goes for negative yards (excluding the TD throw in our W), but OC had a fairly good game.
Also saw the Breece targets comment. Funny enough I found myself yelling "HIT BREECE" literally a handful of times and Fields never checked it down when I wanted him to. He'd allow the defender to close the space, even on the 2 times he did throw to him. If Fields gets him the ball in tempo, Breece can make a man miss. I'm no longer blaming T.E. for that low number, that's on Fields. Breece is open.
I shared the same sentiment though, bad game after drive 1 but it was the tanking Jets style of game I wanted to see. Close enough to be in it but typical Jets to get us the L. Young kids getting reps, all about experience this year. We saw Stiggers at CB (some good and bad) and the 2 new WRs had more snaps than the vets. So I'll take it. I'm not team tank but I'm ok if we're doing it while playing kids instead of vets.
Really good post, David. I like your calmness, level-headedness, and positivity regarding the future. We do have 3/5ths of a very good OL in place. Metchie showed promise, and as you said, Mitchell showed the ability to get open and his speed. I missed almost all of the 1st half, so I missed Mitchell's 1st drop on a long pass. I believe the 2nd one was where he had his man beat by about 3-5 yards and was running to the inside, and Fields threw it behind him and to the outside. I don't know how Mitchell even got turned around and got his hands on it, so imo the blame totally goes on Fields, but it did hit both of Mitchell's hands, so he could have brought it in. He was off balance and falling to the ground, so it would have been an amazing catch. If Fields throws it to the inside and leads Mitchell, it's a TD.
When Fields fumbled in the 4th Qtr., I thought that should be it, and that Glenn should not send Fields back out, yet he did. That royally pissed me off. I want to like Glenn. He's done some good things, has the team still playing hard and believing in him, but if I were a starting player on the Jets, I'd have lost it with Glenn after that. That would have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Connor Hughes had reported that Taylor was warming up on the sideline. If he was physically able to play, he should have played. Fields should never take another snap for the Jets. Either Taylor or Cook should start this coming week. Glenn is showing more care about Fields than what is best for the team. I don't know if he has convinced himself that he can fix Fields or if he has decided to tank, but unless Taylor is so injured he can't play, and Cook looks worse than Fields, Fields should never take another snap for the Jets. It's just insane to keep trotting him out there. It's an insult to the rest of the team and to the fanbase.
I know it won't happen, but if Glenn continues to start Fields, then I will want him fired unless Glenn, Mougey and Woody have agreed to tank the rest of the season to get the best draft position they can. Even though I have wanted them to lose out, I've wanted them to play hard, and show signs of improvement, but they just came up short on the scoreboard, and didn't want Glenn intentionally tanking, and didn't want to see any more Fields. The offense is unwatchable with him on the field. I'm at the sad point where I was rooting for him to get injured last night just to get him off the field.
He (Fields) is showing no confidence, looks lost, and is playing stupid. Only his great escapability saved him 2-3 times in the 2nd half. On the very next play after he was sacked, the same DL came on a stunt inside and should have had Fields. Fields just stood there like a deer frozen in its tracks, and for some reason the DL (#90) didn't reach out with his hands and arms. If he had, he'd have had sacks on successive plays. It looked like it was scripted for him to miss. Fields has no pocket awareness until a defender is right on top of him. I was stunned on the play where intentional grounding was called. What in the hell was Fields doing or thinking just throwing it 20 yards upfield with no one there? Even I know to turn and throw the ball out of bounds. Fields is no longer an NFL player. I don't think a team could even use him as a backup QB. IMO the only way he should stay in the NFL is if he makes a position switch to RB.
I didn’t think the defense was terrible. Before the fumble down by 10 with plenty of time they get a stop and force a punt. After the disastrous fumble hold them to a FG down by 13 with time. I won’t say they were good but it was the offense that lost the game. I think Brownlee was just trying too hard to fill in for no Sauce and injuries. Breece seemed to smile and talk to the Patriots players quite a bit after plays, do you think he was telling them this is my last year of this crap. I don’t want to see Taylor as anything more than a backup, how can Cook be any worse seems impossible. The game was not good but not as bad as I expected, I figured a score of 35 to 6 and I think the team played hard just too many holes.
So you still want to see Fields out there? I don't. Taylor is toast, but at least he can read the Ds, make a decision and get the ball out on time and more accurately than Fields can. The Jets need to see what they have in Mitchell, Metchie, A. Smith, Skinner, Pritchett, and B. Smith. They need to give the rest of the team some hope so they keep playing hard. If they're not going to play Taylor, then they need to play Cook. As you said, it's impossible to think that Cook can be any worse than Fields.
To me that game was to be had IF the Jets got any QB play. Steadfast in not going to Taylor st the 1/2 of any game. My worry is they bring in stop gap for 26 and wait till 27
The way the NFL draft has shaped up the last few years is interesting. The clear top guys usually go in or near the top 10 spots. Maybe a kid with talent ( Jackson Dart) that will need to sit a while maybe slides to the mid 1st. But few if any are taken in round 2. Probably because of the “if you love the guy you go up and get the guy” mantra. There are several QB’s I like enough to pick after the first round. Brandon Sorsby ( Cincinnati, Jaden Maiava ( USC) Sam Levitt ( Arizona) and Darian Mensah ( Duke) all have the physical traits and comparable numbers to the assumed guys. It’s gonna be interesting to see to see how this all plays out.
He does! We may not be able to pick one of the very top guys but there are guys worth at least looking into. Sorsby and Maiava are both bigger guys with mobility!
Yeah, it seems like ever guy ( McShay, Kiper, etc… and ever draft site has their own rankings and few of them agree on anyone but the very top 3. I have watched every USC,Duke,Tennessee,Arizona, Arkansas and several games from other schools as well and I find it amazing how differently they see these players! I mean any player out of the top 275 is basically undraftable.
One thing is for certain; Fields doesn't belong on ANY football field until the Jets release him. He's not a professional quarterback by any stretch of the imagination and running him out there is hubris of the worst kind by Glenn. I don't know what kind of shape Tyrod Taylor is actually in, but he's one tackle away from retirement. He's had issues with his knee going back to TC and the preseason. He is obviously fragile, but he's a true professional and will give his all, probably to his detriment. Brady Cook is an unknown quantity but putting him out there will show if he has any aptitude at all at the pro level. One thing is for sure; the Jets will not be competitive no matter who they run out there at QB.
As far as the WR's go, I think Mitchell and Metchie will be serviceable behind GW, and as others have mentioned, Metchie can be that reliable possession receiver a la Jericho Cotchery. Mitchell obviously has the physical ability and speed. I'm not going to throw him under the bus after a shaky start. And having Fields as the QB is a huge hindrance across the board. One thing is certain, they need to give substantial snaps to the younger receivers like Pritchett and Skinner just to see how their skills translate to the NFL standards.
The defense regressed after a couple of good games, with the return of dumb penalties and an obvious lack of communication in the defensive backfield. Losing AZ Thomas compounded matters with the DB's and Stiggers got shaken up also. Stephens and Brownlee had a tough night, and the D-line showed its warts also. I think Phillips played hurt, which hurt the run defense, but there was very little interior pressure. One thing is for sure, Drake Maye is the real deal, and Mike Vrabel has the team firing on all cylinders.
The Jets are in a teardown and that's that. They do have some solid pieces to work with, but there will not be any quick turnaround. Taking Fields out of the equation is the first step, it's the smart thing to do. He's a lost cause at this point.
Don’t agree with you guys on Justin last night. He did not lose the game for the Jets. The drops by Mitchell were brutal and game changing. And the defense was a sieve. And No pressure on Maye. Refs as usual pounded the Jets as well but that is to be expected in Foxboro. That first penalty on Brownlee for what we used to call a tackle, set the tone. What was most noticeable to me was the offensive coordinator from cheatiots has Maye playing with a precision that the Jets haven’t had since Pennington.
Net for me is I thought Mitchell could could catch but I guess not.
Douglas, I'm sorry, guy, but I totally disagree. Fields is horrible. He has no pocket awareness until a defender is 1 step away, and then he decides to run or throw; otherwise, he's a statue in the pocket. He doesn't move up or to the side. He holds the ball when receivers are open and either can't see them or is afraid to pull the trigger. He throws late, and then either rushes the throw and it's inaccurate, or it's batted down at the LOS.
I usually don't get to see games because the local CBS affiliate doesn't show the Jets, but I got to see the second half last night with my own eyes. When Fields does throw it, 2/3 of the time the placement is horrible, or it's totally inaccurate. Yes Mitchell had a drop early that I didn't see, and one late that I saw that he should have had. But on the 2nd "drop" Mitchell had beaten his man, and had a step or two to the inside. If Fields hits him in stride, or just leads him a little with a little loft on the ball, Mitchell catches it and it's a TD. Instead, Fields throws it late, and then rushes the throw, and it's behind and outside. In mid-stride, Mitchell had to try to turn a 180 locate the ball clearly and bring it in, but he lost balance and was falling. I don't know how he even got his hands on it. Because the ball hit his hands, he "could" have caught it, but it's totally understandable why he didn't. He had a bad night. As David said, his drop rate at Texas was only 1.8%. That means he has good hands, and he's a very good, if not great route runner, is fast, and doesn't have to slow down out of his breaks. He was a 2nd round pick for a reason. He has a ton of potential. On another play later in the game, Mitchell had a step or two on the defender in the end zone. All Fields had to do is loft in there and it's a TD. Fields throw was horribly underthrown and hit the defender (Gonzalez?) in the back of the legs. It wasn't even close. Fields is not an NFL-caliber QB and shouldn't be on the field. He totally is the reason they lost last night.
If you can't see how bad Fields is then I can't help you.
Fields did not lose game for Jets last night. Mitchell had 3 drops not one. He killed 3 drives at critical times.
Jet fans are experts at blaming QB’s for everything wrong. The carousel continues... You will run the next guy out too. At some point, the Jets need to get a proven OC and stick with them and have some patience.
Maye’s success is a direct derivative of Josh McDaniels. Woody, the media and the fans will destroy any QB that comes in. The proof is quite obvious. This will continue with the current formula.
Justin has his negatives that have been obvious for a long time, no disputing that. But if the OC plays to his strengths, like the first drive last night, he can be successful.
I didn't say that Mitchell only had one drop. I said that I didn't see the 1st drop. The 2nd one was not really a drop, it was a horribly-thrown pass that gave Mitchell little or no chance. 98% of WRs in the NFL wouldn't have caught that pass.
The QB is the supposed leader of the offense. Your contention that fans run the QB out is laughable and not even remotely true.
Yes, in an ideal world, Woody would wise up and hire a proven OC as HC and then draft a QB, but that's not likely to happen any time soon. Fields has more than proven that he is NOT an NFL caliber QB. You could be patient until hell freezes over and he's never going to be even an average QB.
Engstrand shares some blame, but Fields limits what the offense can do. He makes it predictable because he can't or won't throw the ball on time, and he reduces the offense to a one-dimensional offense.
He is totally to blame for last night and most of their losses this season, but of course, Glenn is mostly to blame for thinking he could fix Fields.
On one of those TDs, it was a tush push. Several of the Patriots' OL got behind and pushed. Where were the Jets DL? There were only like 3 Jets defenders there, and they all looked ot be LBs or DBs. They stood no chance. It's like the Jets' DL got pancaked or pushed to the side then just stood there and watched.
Initially I was for keeping the tush push, but not now. If a RB can't score on his own with regular blocking, then he doesn't deserve to get a TD and the defenders deserve the stop.
Well, …..Mitchell sure can move! He gets open with ease. We haven’t had a guy like that in years. But he’s gotta come down with at least two of those 3 opportunities he had.
If there is such a thing as coaching or quarterbacking malpractice, this has to be it.
Breece Hall targets over the last five games:
Week 6: 0
Week 7: 3
Week 8: 3
Week 10: 1
Week 11:2
That’s with a few injuries to the receiving corps especially the top playmaker
Garrett
Certainly a possibility isn't it Steve. I hope we don't have to wait that long but i just can't watch this Justin Fields led offense for much longer.
It's not going to happen, but we have nothing to lose going to Brady Cook.
Sorsby seems interesting
He does! We may not be able to pick one of the very top guys but there are guys worth at least looking into. Sorsby and Maiava are both bigger guys with mobility!
Ron, I thought you'd be interested in the following. The Pro Football Network Mock draft has the QBs ranked as follows:

I'll spare you the names but they go all the way to 803. LOL
What are your thoughts? I was shocked that Mensah is at #127 and Maiva is at #165, Arch Manning is #391, and that Sam Leavitt is at #426.
Was thinking the same - just put him out there could be backup or diamond in tough next year
One thing is for certain; Fields doesn't belong on ANY football field until the Jets release him.
That is my simple point and AG’s point too.
LOL Whatever.
Stuck w. Fields? Design and practice a Wishbone Offense instead of an Ad Hoc version as we have now…..
