Good morning! ☀️
The Rangers start their playoff campaign tonight and the Knicks are going for game two. Let’s hope in a few months we’re talking about some playoffs for our Jets, but there is still work to do to get there.
If we want to discover some sustained success then we’re going to need to find a long-term answer to the QB position. Whether you believe in Zach Wilson or not, drafting another QB to try and develop makes sense on a lot of levels.
Today we’re going to look at five different QBs who we could look to draft and develop.
✈️ UAB running back DeWayne McBride visited the Jets facility yesterday and with most players reporting for off-season workouts, that must have been a pretty cool experience. McBride ran for 1713 yards last year (7.4 yards per carry) and 19 touchdowns. He’s a power back who wasn’t used in the passing game (5 career receptions). Most expect him to go around the 4th round.
⛔ As expected Quinnen Williams is skipping the voluntary portion of the off-season. Williams has made it clear that he wants a new deal sorted this off-season, the Jets knew he was going to skip the next few weeks and they’re absolutely fine with it. Both sides are still confident a deal will get done and this doesn’t become a story unless it drags into a mandatory minicamp, and Quinnen skips that. Nicole Lynn who represents Williams negotiated the Jalen Hurts deal that was signed yesterday, making him the highest-paid NFL player in history.
✈️ Sacramento State linebacker Marte Mapu visited the Jets. The Senior was a standout performer in Mobile but didn’t receive an invitation to the combine. He’s been busy so far this month having visited the Texans, Colts, Cowboys, Broncos, 49ers, Titans, Bills, and Packers among others. The Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year lined up at CB, S, and linebacker while in college, and through in 4 interceptions in 2021.
📈 Time for another mock, this time from the Draft Network. TDN projects Peter Skoronski (#13), Brian Branch (#42), and John Michael Schmitz (#43) - Here’s what they said about the JMS selection: "With back-to-back picks in the second round, New York has the freedom to continue building up their offensive line in front of (probably) Aaron Rodgers after adding Skoronski in the first. John Michael Schmitz is the best center in the class and has the positional versatility to play elsewhere if needed."
🏈 I’m making an assumption with today’s column, that the Jets won’t be in the market for a QB in the first round. I don’t see the Jets trading up and I don’t see Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, or Anthony Richardson falling to #13 overall.
So we’re going to start this journey in the second round and if I were a betting man, I’d bet that Hooker will be long gone by this point, but with the injury, stranger things have happened.
With the stat breakdown, I’m going to include their base stats, but also their passing under-pressure stats.
PS2: Pressure to sack percentage. So how many of the pressures turned into sacks.
