Haha sorry Steve. I mean we still have some ridiculous talent on defense and when you have a dominant DT and a lockdown CB, you're usually pretty well set. I'm just intrigued to see how they have the DT, LB and safeties. Lot of questions.
I love how 4 man pressure plus strong CB play work together. It likely covered up deficiency at safety
Quincy looked improved this season, but still felt like raw speed that didn't know where to be, over-running plays. Speed is important but doesn't help when it's not under control. Quincy and Ashtyn showed that
Maybe Ashtyn Davis has learned a lot from the bench and will contribute as a safety, but we don't have a great record with drafting athletic projects
It's certainly a big question. He covered really well in Mobile, but whenever you had someone on the shorter side with smaller length, you're always going to be susceptible against bigger TE's
Every year the composition of a teams defense changes, due to FA, performance and injury. One of the problems of being successful is that your own Free Agents become more expensive , and sometimes unattainable. This year Rankins DT, Quincy Williams & Kwon Alexander are Free Agents that maybe lost due to their price. The performance of the Safeties, Whitehead & Joyner is unacceptable, and they need to be replaced. There is absolutely no depth at DT. Challenges.
Gone are the days of obtaining 6 or 7 Free Agents, the CAP is tight , resource priority for this team will be the Offense, maybe the Defense is allocated one premium FA. Jets only have six draft picks, possibly 2 could go to the Defense.
The Safety and linebacker positions need to under go major reconstruction. At Safety, only Tony Adams is in the pipeline, an UNDFA with promise, but not an NFL starter, it would seem that Ashtyn Davis has run out of opportunities. At Linebacker Nasrildeen has not developed as hoped, and Sherwood hasn’t been tested.
Retreads on prove it deals , and UNDFA’s will be part of the solution at DT, LB & Safety, but this will be a very different Defense. The Defense may only get two draft picks, but one could be an Edge, great Edge Rushers in this draft, lots of holes to fill.
Ashtyn Davis is almost certainly getting cut, right now he's only good for special teams and his cap hit is for over $3 million next year, not even pro bowl special teamers like Hardee get that much. So he'll be gone.
Defensive tackle and linebacker are issues. Quinnen is outstanding but like you say, the depth is non-existent. I imagine we'll see Solomon Thomas return, but we need some real talent infused alongside Q. Then linebacker we have 2 question marks on 3 starting positions and safety is an issue too. When you have issues in the middle of the defense at all three levels, there are issues.
I like LB for day 2, but it's competing with lots of needs. Our offense was completely ineffective at the end of the season, so while our biggest needs might be OT-S-LB for the 1st 3 picks, we badly need an infusion of talent (and health) on offense.
But where would they add for 1st 3 rounds? Center (if not re-signing CMG), big WR (if letting Corey Davis go), OG (if we're giving up on Laken and ok with all the dead $)? At some point we need to score points and that likely starts with blocking someone.
I hate beating the proverbial dead horse here, bad enough he hadn’t shown anything resembling improvement in two years, but when he said “NO”, after the Pat game, he basically destroyed his Jet career, if you want to call his two years here a career and quite possibly his NFL career.
The only reasons he probably be on the team in august is because that great talent evaluator Woody Johnson THINKS he has talent and Saleh is trying to play good coach in spite of players and fans dislike of Zach.
You can’t say that Zach didn’t cause locker room schisms with his attitude.
Depending on the great quarterback hunt, would you draft Hooker in the second round.
His comment certainly caused a lot of issues and while he may practice and word hard (by all accounts he does), it doesn't mean he's a very likeable person, I don't know that for sure at all and don't want to bury a hard working kid, but maybe he's better suited to somewhere out of the spotlight a little. I mean there is going to be attention everywhere, but the spotlight in say Carolina, doesn't shine quite as bright as the one in New York.
I love the idea of Hooker, but I also want to make sure we solidify the line for whoever is playing QB in 2023. If we could potentially move back to add another 2nd round pick and then take for example an OT, John Michael Schmitz and then Hooker...I'd be pretty delighted.
I'm in the rare camp of people that think ZW can still develop in a red shirt year. But we can't afford that easily. Am I crazy here?
Some scenarios:
-If we spend big on Carr, we'll hopefully not need ZW for a while.
-If we trade for and spend big on Rodgers, we're expecting to need a QB in a year or two, so hopefully that's the right environment for him. He's managed to stay healthy besides the thumb issue last year.
-If we sign Jimmy G, we need to expect our #2 QB to be competent. If Jimmy ever stays healthy, he could be a solid efficient system QB, which is what we need for this defense, at minimum.
Either way, we'd build up the OL and run game to complement the defense.
Having ZW in year 3 likely chews up budget we'd use for a quality Brissett type backup, so that's a challenge.
Wilson obviously needs maturity and media training and time to understand how to read defenses. We could have sit him to develop those areas, but the other school of thought is that he needed reps to accelerate his development, to get the game to slow down. It hasn't, at least not yet.
Is it wrong to question the coaching here? Flacco was the vet, but never wanted to be a mentor.
We were told he was a film guy, but it seemed like he either had no idea what to look for in pre-snap, or post-snap the live pressure made him panic into bad decisions too often. Maybe those things can be developed over time. He'll go into the 2023 season as the backup, which is a nice helping of "humble pie" but that's not enough. i think he needs a QB coach to work with him, and maybe a starter to learn under.
Kind of bummed me out David - figured we set on D. LOL Then on top of this Boomer Esaison thinks Rogers going to the Raiders - ugh

agree though withe the points

I really hope Quinnen continues to be all-pro after his contract.
Also it feels like he'd look even more dominant if we got more pressure from the outside.
They can't double everyone
Not sure about a 5’10 LB? We do have Quincy who’s 5’11 and he’s been exposed in the passing game in coverage.
It's certainly a big question. He covered really well in Mobile, but whenever you had someone on the shorter side with smaller length, you're always going to be susceptible against bigger TE's

I feel like edge is one of the least likely positions to draft. JJ was a R1 that showed promise, and Huff will need playing time too.
We do need the rest of the defense -
- run stopping DL for depth
- 2 safeties
-LB
I think we'll see a LB taken within the first three rounds. Jack Campbell and Overshown from Texas are two I'd watch.

I saw numerous interviews by Sauce, Garrett and Breece ( before injury) on SNY’s Jet post game show.
All three came off as intelligent, well spoken, with a commitment to winning ,the ultimate goal, they also always spoke team and not I.
I think Sauce’s deleted tweets speaks volumes about Zach Wilson perception as a quarterback and as a teammate.
For Zach to become a successful, starting quarterback for the NY Jets, it’s going to take the greatest coaching job in Jet’s history.
It also feels as if there is going to be a lot of fence mending needed in the equation.
I just don't see how Zach can come back from this and start for the Jets.
