Wow, David, you really must have been burning the midnight oil to gather up so much information on our beloved Jets.
Joe Douglas being at the combine is the start of a massive undertaking for him to fix this franchise.
Between not having a plethora of draft picks and cap space, he must out perform the accolades he received for the Sauce, Garrett, JJ and Breece draft. I’m sure there are currently times when he must feel like the Titanic’s Captain Smith who didn’t have enough lifeboats.
I think that Alexander leaving might have caught them off guard only because he would have seemed to be the logical replacement for Hogan.
We don’t know how the league perceives Hogan. Over the years, he was never mentioned in any GM hiring stories. Like MacCagnan, he never had a star player’s name linked to his name as a scout or assistant GM.
What we do know about him is that he was positively vociferous in his belief of the Jets drafting Zach Wilson at two. Maybe the fact that he was walking around the Jets complex made all involved parties tense do the calamity of the last season. Either Hogan saw the writing on the wall or he was collateral damage.
Either JD has someone in the organization to step in or he is waiting for after the draft, that is when scouts are more available.
We do know that Hogan was very visible on draft night calling the draft picks to tell them that the Jets had drafted them. Hey Sauce, Rex from the Jets here.
Knowing that JD, is working shorthanded this year, I would like to reach out to Joe and offer my services.
I would be willing to work the three draft days for free to make the calls that Rex made.
Hey Olu, Bobber from the Jets here, you are now Aaron’s teammate
Hey Rome, Bobber from the Jets, ready to start catching passes from Aaron
Dallas, Bobber, NY Jets here, Coach Saleh wanted you from the day he met you, ready to play with the William Brothers, JJ and Sauce. Let me give the phone to Coach.
Hogan. Hhmmmmm, the biggest issue I had with Hogan was the annual bye week failures we had. I always felt the bye was the perfect opportunity to go focus on what was working and more importantly what was not working. And watching our Jets run into the A-gaps 95% of the time on first down was not working. Seeing as Hackett was unwilling to adjust it would be expected that the man who is responsible for reviewing the performance might be more vociferous in looking at ways to improve on that poor performance. Other than those draft day phone calls I honestly have no clue what Hogan actually did?
It's always hard to know how certain guys are perceived in the league, and even if they are perceived well...it doesn't mean they're good at their job. I'm always told how well Woody is perceived around the league, so go figure.
What I want to see is this front office hit on some later picks. We've had Michael Carter II but little else. Xavier Gibson has some potential as a UDFA but I'm not ready to bang the gong of success there just yet.
Ideally we take a tackle early, but we hit on another lineman later in the draft.
Thanks! I haven't been paying attention at all to Edge, CB, or RB as the Jets have zero need at either of the first two, and I think they'll sign a veteran to back up Breece. Also, based on what I've read, it's a crappy draft for RBs.
I'm refusing to even look at the edge players. I'd be spitting mad if we took an edge. I may close down TJW if that happens lol Just couldn't face having to write about it.
Could QB McCarthy and /or WR Brian Thomas jump up into the top nine ? Based on the combine workouts, it’s possible. Odunze & Thomas were very impressive.
Yeah I'm a huge fan of Thomas and while McCarthy was a little inaccurate with some of the drills, he did put the arm strength argument to bed a little with his deep ball. I've seen him as high as #3 to the Patriots and as low as the 2nd round. Placing McCarthy is going to be hard, but it wouldn't shock me to see him go in the top-9. Good for us as that means another guy is dropping.
David, saw a really well done piece on Mort today on ESPN. They do a great job on these sad occasions. Mort was great at what he did. He was highly regarded by his peers, team officials and especially the players. Many of whom including Payton Manning would seek him out to share important news because they trusted him to do it right. I remember Larry Fitzgerald scoring a winning TD in a playoff game running directly to a camera man acknowledging Mort in his fight and holding up the football he was going to give to Mort. This one kind of hit me in the groin as he was only 72 and I’m heading to that number this June. Like almost everyone I have lost way to many friends and relatives to this illness and wish there was a way to make it go away. 😢
There is a good reason why you’re a Brian Thomas fan , he improved his draft stock this weekend. Fuaga looked good but JC Latham is in the conversation.
I was starting to think I was misjudging Latham because, before he was measured, I noticed that he was actually smaller than Fuaga. He weighed in 20 pounds heavier than he was listed as, however. That bothers me. I know none of us can really know what weight he was actually playing at last year. We also don't know what his workout schedule and focus has been. It's possible he wanted to gain weight. It's possible he was already 340 and was looking to firm that weight up. Who knows.
how much time ya got? Most recently Even Neal, Jonah Williams, Alex Leatherwood, Cyrus Kuandro, Batrrett Jones,DJ 🤮Fluker, Chance Warmack,James Carpenter,Andre Smith,….I can go on if you like. Bama just seems to produce a bunch of guys that end up being ok at best.
David, some interesting post combine thoughts. Worthy had a great moment. And he’s a really good player but I’m seeing way too much hyperbole on him and many others. Pretty sure the guy whose record he broke had a mediocre at best NFL career. Running a fast 40 is great but as you noted he’s 169lbs? I also read a negative hit on Oregon WR Troy Franklin who didn’t do the gauntlet drill very well. He didn’t bstay on the line very well so it was a bad look. Yeah, OK NFL teams, listen to the idiot that wrote that and let Franklin fall to us in round 3. Franklin will have a really nice NFL career. Coleman ran a poor 40 time and did drop a few passes but the guys covering the drills seemed to like some of the things he did. He excelled in gauntlet drill running it in better times than anyone else. I did see a lot of video on him getting deep so I think he’s one of those guys that has better play speed than track speed. Like you I’m not a big fan of his. I actually was but his play in FSU’s final game turned me off. He’s got some Denzel Mims vibes for me.
Austin Reed, like any guy that the Jets could take at the bottom of the draft, is going to have his warts. The official NFL draft profile that Lance Zierlein puts together mentions that Reed's arm is suspect. He, apparently, was horrendous when throwing deep. It's also worth noting that 30 percent of his throws were at or behind the line of scrimmage and for throws that were not at or behind the line of scrimmage, his completion percentage dropped into the 50s. Statistics only do so much to tell you about a guy, though. It depends on the kind of system he was working in, who he was playing with, who he was playing against, what he was being asked to do, etc.
I would still like Bo Nix or 'Rattler' Great name in NY LOL All theses QBs going in the 1st round - will leave the jets with something really good at 10. However, becuase all these QBs are over valued - i would still tade 10 for low 1st nd a 2 or 2 - 2's. Should still be able to get what they want,
Two things really annoyed me about Rattler...he was a spoilt little **** on QB1 and as arrogant and entitled as they come...and two, he chose to play for Oklahoma lol
I'm looking forward to that one (although I'll watch in the morning), what a battle of Titans and may be a preview of the Eastern Conference finals. Think we've combined to have two regular losses in the last 20 games combined. Have a great time man. Very jealous.
Steve, bye the way welcome to OTJG’s! I think Nix might sneak into the first. Maybe Penix too? I think Rattler might be there in round 3. There are other QB’s that may go a little later but I agree we will pick one at some point.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and wide receiver Mike Evans have agreed to a two-year, $52-million contract ahead of free agency, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
I think that Mike Evans and Calvin Ridley are pipe dreams. I see no way the Jets can afford to pay as much as either one of them will be asking. Again, the Jets' FA money needs to go into the OL and backup QB positions, and the #2 RB position. The WR position will get whatever is left over, if anything.
I think Troy Franklin is too light and unless he adds 10-15 pounds of muscle, he may not hold up in the NFL. I will be shocked if Xavier Worthy holds up at 165 lbs. The speed is amazing, but it will only take a couple of big hits and that speed could be gone. Then again I never thought that DeVonta Smith would hold up in the NFL with his skinny legs and at 170lbs., but he has, so I could be wrong about Franklin and Worthy. Even if the Jets had an early pick to spend on either, since the Jets want WRs who can block, I can't see either being a viable target for the Jets even though they covet speed.
A 4.61 should not only drop Keon Coleman to the bottom of the top 10 WR prospects, it probably should drop him from 1st round consideration.
I think the new kickoff rule (is it just proposed or has it been adopted?) that STs coordinators created is dumb. That's like the offense telling the D what their next play is going to be. I hope to hell that hasn't and won't be adopted.
I have to disagree with you. David, on Fautanu. Everything I've read on him projects him as an OG in the NFL. If the Jets trade down Tyler Guyton is the OT I want. IMO he has the highest ceiling of any OT prospect not named Alt in the draft.
I loved Braylon when he was with the Jets, and his Jets career ended too soon imo. I love that he stepped in and protected the 80-year-old man this past weekend. The 25-year-old jerk should get the book thrown at him.
If the Jets draft a QB, then based on what I've read so far, Milton or Reed look like they would be worthy choices.
It's a bit surprising that the Jets won't be hiring replacement for Rex Hogan and Chad Alexander. I wonder if that means at all, or just prior to FA and the draft? If it's the former, one could take that as not being a ringing endorsement of JD, and how much longer he will be here, but if Hogan and Alexander had too much say before, that led to some of the bad personnel decisions, then it could be that they decided to just trust JD.
Hi Craig. Excellent post. I too agree that the offensive line needs to be prioritized first. If AR is hoppling around for dear life, 24 will look like 23. After the line is dealt with a mid level receiver or two can be added
Here’s the problem with Guyton vs Fautanua; one’s plug and play the others a project! Guyton probably is the better long range option but most agree he’s far from ready! As is Mims!
I agree with that assessment, but you don't draft a player for just his rookie season. You should look to draft the player with the highest ceiling possible. I would draft Guyton over Fautana almost every single time. The only time I wouldn't is if I couldn't sign two quality starters in FA and had to draft a starter at OT. I'm not convinced that Fautanu should be playing OT rather than OG in the NFL, either.
Well maybe you do when you’re supposedly all in for this season? This kid is very similar in size and play style to the kid ( Slater) and also Skoronski from last years draft. Very technically sound! I can’t see JD drafting a guy like Guyton or Mims who will not play a role this season. We did that last year with McDonald and it didn’t go over well with anybody!
To complete my comment.. promethean is used to describe a massive task or something quite creative/innovative…He will need that this off season. How the myth of an eagle eating Prometheus’ liver to creativity and innovation, I don’t know how that happens.
If JD and the Jets face this massive effort this offseason, I do hope he has no aversion to liver!
As I had Greek food for dinner last night, it occurs to me that the Jets and new specifically JD can be described in the context of two ancient myths. First the myth of Sisyphus whereby JD must push a massive boulder uphill only to have it roll Back on him to start again the next day. Much like his Offensive line selections.
The second is the legend of Prometheus. As a word Promethean It is commonly used to describe a massive task
My bold take is that we should sign Onwenu (who could plat rt and guard) as priority 1, then sign Tyron Smith, let Becton stay on a one year prove it at vet min as the backup, then draft Odunze who a gm at the combine called "the safest player in the draft". This seems cheaper and a better long term move than paying for a Ridley or Higgins. Because of Onwenu, Can get a guard then at 72 instead of overdrafting a tackle (but if Alt falls or we can trade down for Fuaga - then Onwenu plays LG)
I'm all in on signing Onwenu and Smith, but not on drafting Odunze if he's there. Even with Onwenu and Smith, imo the Jets still HAVE to draft an OT with their 1st round pick. This might be Smith's last season, and even if he did play 13 games last season, that doesn't mean he will with the Jets this season. Next year's draft might be a lousy one for OTs. One needs to draft to the strength of the draft, and that is OT. There are good WRs in every draft. If the Jets can trade down and take one of Fuaga, Guyton, and Latham, and add a 2nd round pick, they can still get a very good WR prospect.
I'm really surprised at all the love that Odunze is getting. Granted it was only 2 games in which I saw him play, but it was the two most important games of his collegiate career, and he didn't show me anything. I think Roman Wilson outplayed Odunze in those 2 games. Odunze must have been hell on wheels the rest of his collegiate career. I think Alt is the safest player in the draft.
Yes. Even though he's near 34, he played at a very high level last season. He has missed a lot of games over the last 4 seasons, but played 13 games last season. There are no guarantees that he can repeat that this season, but if he can, that's enough that the Jets could make the playoffs on those 13 games. If the Jets draft an OT at #10, he could learn a lot from Smith, and be ready to take over if/when Smith goes down with injury.
If KC is so interested in him the idea must not be as laughable as you think. You really are arrogant at times.
Sorry my friend but I’m not trying to be arrogant. I’m just not thrilled about going down the Sr.Citizen route again after 6 to 10 years trying that. So Michael Owenu would be my first option. After that I would look into the guard position as they tend to be more affordable. I would feel good about what ever rookie we draft at LT, Owenu at RT and AVT at G but available to play OT in a pinch. We don’t need a hall of fame LT. We need a guy that’s functional. Smith missed 4 games last year but left 3 others early. And as a LT even 4 games is a lot. Especially after he missed 12 the previous season.
It was the emoticons, like you were laughing at my opinion, that prompted the "arrogant" comment. I'm not thrilled to be going down the Sr. Citizen route, either, and in fact, I hate it, especially with his injury history, but I see no viable alternative.
Unless Fashanu falls to #10 (and even then I have seen it projected that he needed to probably spend his rookie season on the right side and then move over to the left next season), none of the OTs (imo) we could draft is capable of playing LT this season. Fuaga's feet are supposedly too slow. I know that you don't want Latham. Mims and Guyton are projects. Paul isn't a scheme fit as he doesn't have the lateral agility. Based on what I've read, both Fautanu and Morgan would be very iffy. I don't think Onwenu plays LT. The other FA choices at LT are Duane Brown, Mekhi Becton, Charles Leno, Cornelius Lucas, Donovan Smith, and Jonah Williams. Williams is young but hasn't been very good until this past season, and that was at RT. Donovan Smith wasn't very good for KC, and they are moving on from him. So who's gonna play LT? I disagree that we just need someone "functional." Besides, we aren't going to draft a "functional" OT at #10, and there won't be an OT worth spit at #72. Where are we supposed to get this "functional" LT?
Tomlinson didn't miss a game either of the last two seasons. How good was he?
I'm skeptical that they'd be able to land two of the best offensive linemen in free agency. That'll cost a pretty penny. I'm primed to see the Jets snag one of the B+ guys (think a Runyan or a Brewer) and then take a flier on someone with potential and less a proven record (maybe Njimon or Cleveland). The point is that there are quite a few interesting offensive linemen out there that would be good once you plug them into a functional offensive line. Some of them are, even, quite talented.
Smith & Brewer is feasible with Tippman moving to OG. Some post Combine mocks are showing Fuaga going to the the Giants at 6, OG the Falcons at 8, interesting.
Danny Boy, you’re on your game as usual. I Came across several articles during the season saying this offense could be so much better with even average offensive line play. Going after a aging vet with an extensive injury history like Smith would be so Jets like and making the same mistake we’ve been doing these last 6 to 10 seasons. The line has been a mess since the days of Brick and Nick.
As such matters are highly individualized, I recently have been drinking Toki by Suntory and Dalmore single malt highland. As the wife wants me to walk the Scottish Terriers now, a wee bit may be in order.
I'm not a whisky man but I've recently worked with Suntory and the effort and quality of their products is second to none. Do either of you guys drink Saki?

Exactly my point.
When he came over from the Colts. Two straight years, the Jets traded for two dbs that were drafted from his time at the Colts.
Both guys flopped.
Do you think I got a chance for the phone job?
I'd hire you Bobber.
It's always hard to know how certain guys are perceived in the league, and even if they are perceived well...it doesn't mean they're good at their job. I'm always told how well Woody is perceived around the league, so go figure.

How long would the fan base like me if I made the phone call to the first rounder
Hey Dallas, Bobber from the Jets here, ready to play D for us
Dallas?
Dallas Turner, Edge rusher from Alabama. One of the best defenders in the draft
Just me being a ball buster, the masses would go crazy if they went D
Totally tongue in cheek
Thanks! I haven't been paying attention at all to Edge, CB, or RB as the Jets have zero need at either of the first two, and I think they'll sign a veteran to back up Breece. Also, based on what I've read, it's a crappy draft for RBs.

I’m a Bama alum. Latham gives me bad vibes. I will hope to be wrong if we draft him.😂
I watched him in the playoffs and he got schooled badly. Plus, Alabama has had a poor run of o-linemen over the years.
I believe I supported my thoughts quite well!
Ron, I'm curious. What about Ltham gives you bad vibes?

Im Bama too !
I've really grown to like Latham the more I watch...but Troy Fautanu that is rising the quickest up my rankings
And he’s a LT. A little shorter at 6’3” than ideal but Slater is the same size and he’s been great for the Chargers.
The Giants with Neal are not to fond of Alabama Offensive Lineman
Give me more Graham Barton!!!!
Not sure Graham can last until 72. Five position guy, Center his best position ?, Played some LT

If JD and the Jets face this massive effort this offseason, I do hope he has no aversion to liver!
You also might want to refer to Hercules cleaning out the Augean stables, there's a LOT of dung at 1 Jet Drive, lol.
Couldn’t agree more
As I had Greek food for dinner last night, it occurs to me that the Jets and new specifically JD can be described in the context of two ancient myths. First the myth of Sisyphus whereby JD must push a massive boulder uphill only to have it roll Back on him to start again the next day. Much like his Offensive line selections.
The second is the legend of Prometheus. As a word Promethean It is commonly used to describe a massive task
Damn, your way to smart for this group🤣 I bet the only one who gets this is Danny Mac☘️😂
Thanks….but as I said, I was inspired by the greek food, or perhaps it was the Ouzo.
Greek or Turkish, same drink…we did have Ouzo but I’m partial to both
Now tell the truth, was it Ouzo or Raki ?????
Love this!
So you wanna bring in a soon to be 34 year old OT that’s missed 39 over the last 4 seasons?🤔😂 Fortunately he appears headed to KC.
Who would you bring in?
So many different permutations. I suppose we will have to see how it plays out
Absolutely…..
Well, on occasion but I’m an Irish whisky lad. 😂
Haven’t tried it yet. But I am Irish😂
I can relate to that! For me it’s beer🍺 or Irish Whiskey 🥃whisky😂
Not a wee bit of single malt laddie?
