Interesting note from watching the highlights: Brandin Echols was working as Michael Carter's immediate backup "Nickel" for most of the game. That is an important spot.
He's always been a little, yet well-built dude. Athleticism oozes off of him. He's the kind of guy who can become whatever you'd like him to be because of that kind of athleticism. He's probably been getting plenty of mental and physical reps in the slot to give the team more flexibility in the defensive backfield.
Echols is a very nice punt Gunner, worked with Stiggers, together they were very effective. Last year of Echols contract, lasted year of Michael Carters contract. Michael should get top slot money approximately 3 years 40 million. Brandon still has that automotive incident hanging over his head, with potential NFL fine or suspension. Like to see the Jets get proactive and re-sign Michael Carter or Brandon Echols to a long term deal.
I don’t think there is a right answer here about whether to play Rodgers or not but Patrick Mahomes threw 14 passes on Saturday, so he probably played a half.
Reid is old school and the fact the Chiefs have been to 5 straight AFC Championship games and 4 Super Bowls shows that he doesn’t deviate year to year wether it’s a preseason or regular season game.
Fortunately for Reid, he is playing with house money while wearing 3 Super Bowl 💍💍💍 while Saleh is coaching for his Jet career.
So his decision not to play Rodgers is understandable.
The Jets rested the top 32 players from their roster on Saturday. That gave the bottom of the roster an opportunity to showcase their talents to wether they belong in the big show or at least the practice squad or unfortunately delivering packages to Mrs. Bobber ( she’s an all pro online shopper) working for UPS or FedEx.
I understand these players in their anxiety to impress the boss but again 2023 biggest complaint against Saleh is the undisciplined play of this team that results in penalties.
To make a serious run to and thru the playoffs, this really needs to be addressed.
Over the years, all NFL teams training camps develop players who become Mr August, it appears that Where’s Waldo#7 is unfortunately being joined by Where’s Waldo#58, Eric Watt. His play in the two games and joint scrimmages has really fallen off.
From Saturday night’s Athletic
He didn’t record any stats but undrafted defensive end Braiden McGregor was winning a lot of his matchups as a pass rusher and nearly had a sack at one point in the third quarter. He stood out more than undrafted rookie defensive end Eric Watts, who was an early favorite to stick around based on his performance in practice.
From Connor Hughes SNY
- It’s notable that Takk McKinley and Braiden McGregor worked together as the defensive ends on the second unit. This represented a demotion of sorts for Eric Watts, perhaps suggesting that McGregor is ahead of him in the battle between the two undrafted rookies. McKinley could be in the mix too, especially if the Jets want another veteran presence in the main rotation with Where’s Waldo#7 status still up in the air.
Lastly, Brandon Cardrington is the new preseason golden boy for the Brigade. Unfortunately, do the Jets have a spot on their roster for him. He is a 5’9 185 corner in a crowded cornerback room.
He should be given every opportunity to return every kick against the Giants Saturday.
If he is successful, whose roster spot does he take. I’m sure Special Teams coach Boyer will be hunting for Bear prior to countdown day
Hey Bobber, my wife has a mini fridge on the front porch with drinks and snacks for delivery drivers. Bribes so packages arrive on time and in good shape. She also is a true Pro in the online shopping world. I am I Georgia so I don’t get any preseason Jets games until 1 or 2 days after, as much as I love the Jets and football I can’t bring myself to watch a 2 day old preseason practice.
I think we should start the Torch and Pitchfork Brigade Wives Auxiliary. Wives who watch football and shop online. Definitely their hero would be Arthur Smith the ex- Falcon HC. His father started FedEx.
Watching repeats two days after the fact sucks.
I’m lucky I live about 15 minutes from stadium. I gave up my tickets after The Woody Johnson Roger Goodell PSL Ponzi Scheme.
A poster on another site said that with the new KO rules, the gunner role will be much less important. If that is correct, then it is possible that the Jets could replace Charles on the roster with Codrington, if he can be both a great return man and gunner, but in an "all-in" season, would the Jets risk giving those jobs to a UDFA rookie? I loved what I saw from Codrington on Saturday night, and he has made some plays on D in practice. I'd much rather see him on the field at DB than Charles at WR. I never want to see "stone-hands" Charles on the field at WR again.
The penalties definitely need to be cleaned up!
Speaking of Mahomes, did you see the behind the back pass he made during the preseason game? It was very risky with defenders right there, and wasn't particularly accurate. I wonder what Reid thought about it and if he had anything to say to Mahomes about it.
I wonder what's happened to Watt. McGregor has definitely been making plays in games and Watt hasn't. Would the Jets risk losing him to waivers after paying him so much money to sign? Right now I'd say that McGregor deserves to make the team over Watt. It will be interesting to see what happens.
From what I've see, Wattss just looks like the 2024 version of Michael Clemons, lol. I feel that McGregor has better pure pass-rush skills than Watt does and seems to move more fluidly. I and really feel that Clemons' play will not justify his spot on the roster. I think his size is good, but his speed is negligible and he has no bend to him. Unless he unveils some really good moves and play against the Giants, they should put him in the rear-view mirror. His anger issues and penchant for inciting havoc, rightly or wrongly, are not traits that are helpful for a team that is in an all-in season. And his play can't cash the checks his mouth writes. He was decent his rookie year, but no great revelation of talent. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Watts seems kind of stiff, which would also make him similar to Clemons. I don't what they are going to do, but RS seems to have some kind of strange loyalty to players even when their performance is quite lacking.
Bobber, Interesting situations developing on the d-line. McGregor clearly stood out. Leonard Taylor has flashed and Erick Watts is gonna be tough to cut. McKinley only makes this roster if Reddick continues his hold out or is traded. I agree with J.O on trading our surplus. Picking up late round picks that can be used in trades or in fortifying the bottom of the roster. Funny thing is JD seems to do better picking up UDFA’s than drafting late.
It will be interesting to see what happens. The Jets might want to keep a veteran presence in the Edge room. It would be risky to go with all youth, if Reddick never joins the team. At this point, if Watt continues to be invisible in preseason games, he might clear waivers and make it to the PS, but would the Jets be willing to risk that after how much they paid him to sign?
I agree with trading surplus but there's no chance teams would give up assets for bottom of the roster gambles. They can easily scour the bottoms of rosters on cutdown day for nothing.
I agree with each and everyone here today about the quality of play Saturday. It was an ugly game to watch. Penalties galore, dropped passes, blown assignments and unimaginative play calling all added up to a great big UGHHH🥱😴😴😴😵💫 One note, I wonder if young Mr.Codrington can play in the slot? I would love to see him find his way on to this roster. That kids got more moves than X-Lax!😂
Ron, do you mean slot CB? He's a DB, not a WR. He certainly made a case for himself on Saturday night. I think he has a chance to make the roster. It may depend upon how bad Charles' hip injury was, but a poster on another board said that Charles wasn't hustling on kick and punt coverage on Saturday night. I didn't see it, but then I missed the 1st qtr., and parts of the game as I stepped away to go to the bathroom and take an important phone call.
He is listed at 363 pounds!!!!! That's heavier than I think he ever was with the Jets. I'd be shocked if his legs held up this season with him that heavy. The dumb kid is going to eat himself out of the NFL.
Craig, actually he showed up around 400lbs prior to mini camp last year after sitting out all the OTA’s! Terrible look. From reports from Costello he went to some weight loss facility and got back to around 365 at training camp. I never liked him after his rookie season. His commitment just wasn’t good enough.
I thought I'd take a stab at whom I think will make up the roster and PS. Of course, this could change with injuries, Reddick reporting, or a player who has been hot in TC cooling off, and someone else getting hot in the last week or so of TC preseason games and joint practices.
Offense (25)
QB – Rodgers, Taylor
RB – Hall, Allen, Davis
WR – Wilson, Williams, Corley, Gipson, Lazard, Brownlee, Charles
PS (16) This is the wildcard. Any of the following players could be claimed by another team. JD also usually signs a cut or two from other teams. I think the Jets should keep both QBs as one could get signed off the PS, but think they'll probably only keep 1. Without the players with question marks after their names and with only 1 QB, I have 14 of the 16 spots filled. The other 2 could either be from those with question marks, players cut from other teams, one from another team and one with the question mark,or if the Jets do sign a camp cut or two, the players who were cut to make room for the addition of the camp cuts. I don't remember a deeper, more talented roster in a long time, maybe ever.
QB - Peasley and/or Martinez
RB - Izzy, Valladay? Deon Jackson?
WR - Malik Taylor, Tyler Harrell, Brandon Smith
TE - Kuntz, Sefcik? Firkser?
OL - Latham, Mitchell
Edge - McGregor, Holmes
LB - Eguavoen
DT - Hector
CB - Codrington
S - Oliver, Key? Monroe?
*Foreign Exemption - Obinna Eze (doesn't count in the 16 PS players)
I don't know if it's true or not, but I read on another site, that Reddick was losing $791K per pre-season game he missed. If true, then Reddick is up to $3 million in fines and lost salary.
David, I agree that Izzy should get some run with the 2nd stringers. He's earned it imo, and Davis hasn't looked good at all running the ball in preseason action. If nothing else, if they're thinking that he's not in their future plans and of possibly trading him, showcasing him in extended action vs the Giants could enhance his trade value. If he has truly improved, knows the blocking scheme and is running more decisively, then I hope the Jets keep him.
I really hope that McDonald is working on other pass rush moves and isn't showing them in preseason action, because teams are going to catch on to his spin move and it will stop working. He's not big enough to have an effective bull rush. The Jets really need him to be effective, especially if Reddick continues to sit out or is traded.
IMO Barnes deserves a spot on the roster. TC reports have that Sherwood and he have looked like the two best LBs on the roster in TC, and that they have been flying all over the field making plays. If they Jets only keep 4 LBs, then Surratt should be the one to go imo. Let Barnes take his place on STs.
The penalties have to stop.
I'm not worried about Fashanu giving up 2 pressures. He's adjusting to playing on the right side. He'll get it figured out.
Neither backup QB looked good Saturday night, but once again, Peasley looked better than Martinez. Peasley could have made a better throw on the throw to the EZ that forced Kuntz out of bounds, but it least it led Kuntz and was where only Kuntz could catch it. Martinez looked truly awful. He was throwing behind his receivers the whole time, not throwing with anticipation, and he easily could have had 1-2 additional passes intercepted. There were several times where he could have used his legs and he just stood there in the pocket holding the ball too long. The Jets need a viable 3rd QB. Who knows when Travis will be healthy, so he should get a redshirt season and stay on the NFI or IR list. Peasley can go to the PS if they like him enough, but I hope they add another QB from among the camp cuts.
I don't know if the Jets just had a bad game, if the Panthers depth is better than the Jets' depth, or if the Panthers are better-coached than the Jets, but I was particularly disappointed in the play of the Jets WRs. Brownlee is practically invisible in games. I'd like for Brownlee to make the roster, but to do so, he needs to make some plays, including contested catches vs the Giants, or it's back to the PS for him. McCutcheon is OK, and maybe deserves a PS spot again. Smith makes some plays but he's so slow, I can't imagine the Jets even considering him for the roster, so it would be the PS at best for him.
Xavier Newman locked up the Tenth Offensive Line spot with his play at Center. Brandon Echols & Stiggers will be the gunners this year. The DB room is incredibly deep this year. WR Malik Taylor was placed on IR, with a shoulder injury of a week ago. Cut down day is EIGHT days away, the Jets will cut some very good players. In preparation for cut down day, the Jets will be in sales mode.
Kicker Austin Seibert for a possible Seventh round pick.
RB Izzy Abanikanda for a Sixth
LB Chad Surratt for a Sixth
OT/OG Max Mitchell for a Fifth
CB DJ Reed for a Fourth, and 10 million in CAP relief…CB depth is significant.
Move these players now , and get something, because next Tuesday is cutdown day.
Wow, that's pretty bold that u say they wud trade DJ Reed. They might not resign him next year, however I don't see in any way how they trade him in an all in year.
Excellent point, it is an all in year. First , I think there is always a market for starting CB’s and Reed has played well. But both Stiggers and JBC have played well, and could be starters in this league. Obtaining a fourth, is not all that important, but 10 million in CAP could be. I would re -sign Michael Carter with that money, but the Jets maybe looking to obtain another Offensive weapon
Neither JBC, who's injured, and Stiggers, can't be counted on to start, not even close. And Echols is serviceable, but he's no Reed. If the Jets want to really make an impact and at least get to the playoffs, they need Reed at his best. It just doesn't make sense to trade him now.
I'd be truly amazed if the Jets traded Reed. He's a leader in that secondary, is still highly productive, we have no known commodities behind him and we're an all-in team with a defensive minded head coach.
Exactly !!!! It makes no sense at all. And there isn't anyone to replace him. Echols is decent, but him starting instead of Reed is pretty ludicrous. The Jets have some very interesting prospects in JBC and Stigger's, but neither one can't even be considered as a starter for at least another TC and pre-season.
I think it's very risky for the Jets to use Echols and Stiggers as their gunners. They are perhaps the top two reserve CBs, and if Reed is traded as you suggest, then Echols or Stiggers would probably be the #2 CB. I think Boyer will have something to say about whom the gunner is. A poster on another site said that he thought that with the new KO rules, the gunner positions would be less important. If that's the case, can Codrington be a good gunner as well as the return man? I'd much rather use him as a gunner than risk Echols or Stiggers on STs.
I hate that Taylor was injured and has to go on IR, but at least they'll retain his rights.
It's not often that we disagree, but we do about the trades. The only player I'd trade is Seibert. He's been perfect in preseason, and I remember readingg that one team had either just cut their K and was looking for another, or was close to cutting him because he's been bad in TC and preseason.
Izzy may make the team if the Jets decide to keep 4 RBs. He looked good the other night. Playing behind a good OL, he could look even better. At a minimum, he needs to go to the PS. The only way I think the Jets should trade him is if they have decided that he's not part of their future. Davis hasn't been looking at all in preseason as a runner. I think he's only averaging like 2-3 ypc. He's looked quick/fast as a receiver, but his vision is supposed to be his best asset, but I've seen no evidence of it in preseason action, but then he's been playing with the dregs of the OL in front of him. I think that;s why the Jets put him in the game Saturday night before Allen to see if he fared any better, but he didn't. I think that could definitely open the door to the Jets keeping Abanikanda.
There's no way the Jets will trade Surrat. He's had a good TC, Saleh loves him, and I read somewhere that he's a core STer. He either makes the team or goes on the PS.
Similarly, I don't think the Jets would consider trading Mitchell. He may even make the team since he can play OT/OG, but I think he goes to the PS. I think the Jets need another IOL on the roster who can play C in a pinch. Schweitzer doesn't have that much experience at C and he's a better OG than C. Newman has looked good in preseason.
What makes you think the Jets would trade Reed in an all-in year? They have the best CB trio in the NFL. They're probably going to have to let him walk in FA next offseason, but I think they hold onto him this season, although he hasn't been looking very good in TC or preseason.
No, do not trade them. They need to hold onto as many of them as they can for depth.
I doubt they actually trade any of the bottom of the roster guys, but not because they wouldn't love to get compensated. Other teams aren't going to pay for another team's bottom of the roster players. It's just a poor use of resources. The way it goes is that a few guys get squeezed out and the league fights over those guys. It's conceivable that teams eventually start trading a 7th for a backup or a special teams guy they like, but it isn't how the NFL operates at the moment.
Also, everybody would love to not play their depth pieces on special teams but there are only so many spots on the roster. I'm sure they'd rather not put anybody at an injury risk, but if a guy can play special teams well, he is going to play special teams. It's a waste of a resource otherwise.
Yes, I haven't paid much attention to whom played ST except for the gunners, returners, and kickers/punters and Long snapper. A poster on another site pointed out to me that Stiggers and Echols have done well as gunners so far in TC and preseason and that Echols was a gunner last season, so guess they should continue.
It makes you wonder if they see Echols as a guy who they'd bring back on a multi-year contract with the intention of turning him into a larger contributor, with an eye towards allowing DJ Reed's contract to expire.
They could be considering that, but since they have JBC and Stiggers, they could let Echols walk in FA. If memory serves me correctly, Echols is good in coverage, but even with all his aggressiveness (which gets him penalized at times), he's not very good against the run. He's also had some off-field issues with driving way too fast. They have so many FAs next offseason and have MC II, Sauce, G. Wilson, JJ, and Breece to extend, as well as Sherwood, and several others. I think that both Clark and Davis will be FAs at S as well.
Massive Post , lots of information. Trading Reed in an all in year is crazy, but the Jets have a couple of outstanding young CB’s, the Jets are saving up for Sauce, or a move at the trading deadline. Surratt has had an excellent camp, but Barnes looks spectacular. Jets keeping 5 linebackers ? Izzy ran hard, he has all that speed , needs opportunity to run back kickoffs, he’s only 22, but can’t see the Jets carrying 4 RB. Mitchell has had a resurgence, but now that Olu has demonstrated that he can play Right Tackle, do you really need 5 OT’s ? Sometimes it’s all about the numbers
I think there's a zero chance of Reed getting traded before the season. And why would you think that. They need Reed to lock down his side. He knows he'll be a free agent after the season and is going to go all-out. Maybe during the season if the wheels fall off and it goes to full-mode house-cleaning and a true rebuilding effort. And there is a lot of good DB talent, but no one I would want to start instead of Reed this season.
I can see trading Izzy because there is no way he is going to jump ahead of Davis, but the Jets may keep 4 RB's and he would be the fourth. No one else has shown anything at all. If Cohen hadn't retired, I would have traded Izzy already.
I don't think they would get any takers for Surratt, he's well past his sell-by date. And I doubt that anyone will trade for Seibert before the season unless they lose a kicker. There's no reason to do it. He'll either be cut or claimed off waivers if the Jets try to sneak him to the PS. And I don't think anyone will give a fifth for Mitchell based on his first two seasons. It just doesn't make sense, especially with cutdown day a week away. There's no upside for other teams.
Davis i was glad you pointed out what a crap game this was. Was worried that you would be jumping up and down with praise players who wont play in the NFL or the game itself lol. As a season ticket holder (and i am not bragging about that as its the Jets) its a travesty that these games are played and charged for full price. That game was pure crap, non competitve, non entertaining. I remember 6 preseaon games. I just dont remember a year this bad for these games. On top of it i see all kinds of grading from the likes of The Jets Press - are you kidding me ? Come on now - utter ridiculous. I think the nest part of the games was watching Mahomes throw a pass behind his back to kelce !
Interesting note from watching the highlights: Brandin Echols was working as Michael Carter's immediate backup "Nickel" for most of the game. That is an important spot.

When you mentioned his having more moves than X-Lax, it sounded like you were thinking he was a slot WR. Sorry if I misunderstood your intent.

I don't remember a deeper, more talented roster in a long time, maybe ever.
QB - Peasley and/or Martinez
RB - Izzy, Valladay? Deon Jackson?
WR - Malik Taylor, Tyler Harrell, Brandon Smith
TE - Kuntz, Sefcik? Firkser?
OL - Latham, Mitchell
Edge - McGregor, Holmes
LB - Eguavoen
DT - Hector
CB - Codrington
S - Oliver, Key? Monroe?
*Foreign Exemption - Obinna Eze (doesn't count in the 16 PS players)
Excellent , can’t even nitpick, very well done
What is very impressive is the depth the Jets have on their PS. If Brandon Smith came in earlier, he could have beat out Brownlee
I hope that you're right about Newman.
