I think the concern is less about the cap space and more about the capital it would take to acquire him. The Raiders paid 1st and 2nd rounders. While he’s 18 month older they likely would want at least our 1st back.

I’m not sure we can trade away our 1st and 2nd in a season where we’re still without a competent QB

I take it your still not sold on Zach? That’s understandable as its gonna take a lot more to convert most Jet fans. 😂

Is anyone sold on zach??

Well…. We do have Craig here😂🤣

Time will tell as he has played a bit better. I’m not sure his improvement will take us to the playoff promise land, but given the play of the defense, getting into the playoffs is certainly a possibility.

La’el Collins, both the Giants and Jets said no. It’s either medical or money or both. But Collins is a Right Guard and a Right Tackle, could bring him around slowly so he could be ready in a month. Chance for Collins to rebuild his brand. Thought Schweitzer was a quality backup, wasn’t all that impressive in the Eagles game, we will see. Joe take another look

Yeah, I saw Schweizer get pushed back into Zach’s lap Sunday. Embarrassing!

I agree with you, but for no one to want to take a shot at Collins at all, including two teams with serious O-line issues, there's something wrong here that is not out in the open. Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't he with the Bengals when he was released ? They are having O-line problems also and let him go. Usually where there's smoke there's fire.

Expand full comment

You are absolutely correct on all counts. Collins signed a three year FA deal with the Bengals last year, his play was mixed, but the 30 year old had back problems all year , still played, in Mid December was put on IR with an ACL/MCL injury. The Bengals kept him on the PUP list until September 12th and then released him , in part for CAP reasons ( 7 million ravings) . Reports, possibly from his agent, that he would be ready to play in a couple of weeks. Collins is a gamble, for late season and the potential playoffs, the money would have to be right.

Expand full comment

Yup, that's the only way it could be done, something like a cheap "show me" deal. And reports from agents should be taken with a ton of salt.

David, hope you are feeling better but unfortunately having two young children will definitely put your whole family on the Germ Merry-Go-Round for this winter.

You hit the nail right on the head, “ nurseries are germ factories “.

Be prepared for a rough winter.

Keeping it short and sweet, this past off season there was a a contingent of Jet fans who wanted Carr instead of Rodgers plus another contingent who wanted Garoppolo instead.

The main reasons for these contingent’s view was player’s age, draft picks and salary cap implications.

Garoppolo has proven again, he is probably the most fragile quarterback in recent NFL history. It seems he is always hurt. Always a ?

Carr and the Saints with a very talented offensive line and receiving corp are having a real hard time scoring points. That’s turning into a real mystery. Is it the coaching staff, the scheme or Carr.

Their performances are proving that going after Rodgers was the right thing for the Jets to do but unfortunately....................................

David, stay away from the baby, unfortunately she is next, as the Germ Merry-Go-Round picks up steam.

Thanks, fascinating to reflect on Carr and Garoppolo. Was never on the Garoppolo train, but he is more fragile than I ever thought. Was a big Carr guy thought he was a great fit, liked the price. I thought Rodgers would be too expensive, but it cost us less draft Capital than I thought, was absolutely stunned on the team friendly contract. But the biggest thing was that I thought , AR was a bit of a jerk at Green Bay, but he came to the Jets as a great teammate and an outstanding leader, lifted this entire team. Huge Rodgers fan now

Bye weeks are tough with subject matter.

Watching Carr last night had me thinking about the past off season.

Currently Carr’s yards per attempt and yards per completion are the second lowest of his career. Then again, He has thrown to Kamara 39 times for 35 completions and 177 yards in 4 games, sorts of skews his completion %

The fact that he has barely played in cold weather games and when he has, he has performed terribly, basically making the Jets Rodgers decision, the right decision.

I was never a Garoppolo advocate, But I did favor Carr over AR at the beginning. Things are pretty rocky in The Big Easy right now and the sniping has begun in earnest. Carr hasn't really lived up to his hype, that's for sure.

Absolutely great point on Carr

Adams is an unattainable dream this year. You would have to pay me with a pick swap to take Renfro, who is probably just a rental. Have some interest in Jerry Juedy because of the Hackett connection. Carolina, has two WR’s in Terrace Marshall & 33 year old Adam Thielan that deserve an inquiry. More interested in an OG, but don’t see anything out there. Expect the Jets will bring back Scrubeenies , Adam Pankey or Chris Glaser to the PS, but they are not a solution. Jets have an open roster spot. At WR, banging the drum for Lazard and Gibson to split reps in the slot, with the outside WR shared by Brownlee, The Wolf, and Lazard.

Something going on with Jeudy in Denver. Supposedly really turning himself into a fire sale player

Mark Schlereth who bleeds Denver Orange went scorched earth on him recently, then Jeudy went after him and Schlereth buried him. Jeudy just another prima Donna wr.

Theilen would be the perfect slot player for the Jets, unfortunately he is Carolina’s security blanket on offense.

He seems a bit immature. His whole thing with Steve Smith as well, just burning a lot of bridges and tanking his value.

Expand full comment

And take care of yourself David, I've been through that pre-school germ virus situation numerous times over the years.

Expand full comment

Rank immaturity is the biggest problem with the younger players coming into the league, with some worse than others. The Jets have had their fair share of them in the past, but I guess Joe D's interest in good character players has born fruit. With the Jets being as bad as they have been, the newer players have been a revelation as respects their maturity in dealing with the situation.

I agree, Adams is not going to happen and Renfro would have to be a smart deal for a rental. Being too aggressive in going after a big name now is not ideal, regardless of AR coming back or not. It's too bad they didn't hold on to that former Bengal they had during the pre-season, can't recall his name. He could play outside, in the slot and was a great special teamer and could return punts and kicks also. His route running was excellent, and he was as tough as a leather saddle left out in the desert for 10 years, lol. I'd rather have him over Cobb, who's pretty much done. The problem with the o-line is that there aren't too many decent players out there to go after. There are a LOT of Glaser's and Pankey's out there and any team that has even a decent player is not going to let them go.

I’m guessing at this WR, not a Bengal but a former Packer , Malik Taylor, because he was down III the depth chart, Zack developed a rapport with the Kid, currently on the Practice Squad

Expand full comment

No, it was Scott Erickson I believe. In fact, they both contributed significantly in one of the Jets preseason games, the one where Taylor caught a long pass. But Taylor is another receiver that they could bring in, he looked decent.

Taylor >>> Cobb

Alex Erickson is on the Practice Squad of the Chargers

Expand full comment

Mike what a great memory you have, Alex only had a cup of coffee with the Jets, the knock on the guy was that he was 30, and a little on the small side , cur him when Corey was still with us, and the Jets were flush with WR’s . Very fast , scrappy , good route runner, played Special Teams, played for nice productive Offenses in Cincinnati. I would poach him from the Chargers better than Renfro

Taylor is on the Jets' PS

I don't understand your disdain for Renfrow. As David said, he is one of the best route runners in the NFL and has reliable hands. He could definitely replace Cobb and be much better. He doesn't have great speed or size, but he is a reliable chain mover, and that's something we definitely need. Lazard and Cobb just aren't reliable and Zach needs another viable option besides GW or Conklin.

I would welcome Marshall or Thielan, but not Jeudy. Based on what I've read, he is a bit of a headcase and he hasn't been impressive at all in the NFL. With the way he was hyped pre-draft, one would have thought he was the next Jerry Rice. I'm not sure that he would fit in with the type of players that the Jets want, plus he has been injured quite a bit.

Who is "The Wolf"?

Expand full comment

First of all, my apologies “The Wolf is Irv Charles, the 6’4 218 pound WR and Special Teams demon, that has made punt coverage fun.

We all agree that we need to upgrade from Cobb, and Renfro is an upgrade. My problem is that he doesn’t give you any YAC or Speed. He makes 6.5 this year which is a little pricey, but next year is prohibitive 11.5

Expand full comment

No need to apologize, but thanks for the answer.

I didn't realize that Renfro would be that pricey next year. We probably wouldn't be able to afford that cap-wise unless the cap goes up a lot, but I think he could help our offense and Zach a lot.

Expand full comment

Just read an article by Nania at Jets X Factor, that strongly support’s Renfro, and asserts that Renfro kicks the Jets Offense up a level, says he is a great fit

The wolf is Irwin Charles our secret weapon! His blocking is impressive!

David, Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well! I hope that you're soon feeling much better! With an infant and one in a nursery, you need to do all you can to boost your immune system, and I would also recommend getting an air purifier.

As much as we need that 3rd WR i woud rather get a O-lineman. We have at least 2 of 3 TEs that should be more in the mix. Gipson over Cobb - Hell even Charles could be used. Need a solid o-lineman. However, i dont think the jets are doing anything major before the dealone. They would have as they can use the bye week to get them indoctrinated. Its already Friday.

Expand full comment

Cap is scary for Adams. Rams are handling it well, but the opposite side of the coin is the Saints. Yikes.

That being said, agree with the need at WR and would love them to get super aggressive and go after someone like Higgins.

Expand full comment

hey David!

$ aside, I'd lean more towards a true #2 wideout; we have several guys that can perform credibly from the slot in Lazard, Gipson - and betcha Breece could embarrass a couple-a-three or four defenders from the slot. But a true #2? Lazard, maybe, but he's no burner, just a big body, possession type. didn't think I'd miss Corey in this role, but I do.

Now - who's available out there who fits the bill? What does TJW Cabal think of Jeudy? Or the Vikings; they're 2-4, chasing the south end of a south-bound mule with increasing speed - they get to play the 49ers this weekend (what Fun!) - ya think they'll listen to calls about some of their receivers (hint: has the same initials as our own J J)?
