Overall, it is not a fleecing by any means, and I can see how they may have been going back and forth on the parameters of the 2024 2nd round pick.
I can see how it would be unreasonable for the Packers to entertain that a perennial losing organization would have to achieve a certain level of success, or guarantee a player of Aaron's character to commit to two seasons, in order to get back a 2024 #1 pick.
The 65% threshold does protect the Jet's from Aaron suffering a season ending injury early or at minimum, midway through the season.
The 65% turns out to be just over 11 games (11.7), so it does serve as an insurance policy in the event of a catastrophic injury situation dovetailing the 2023 season.
Even if Aaron gets hurt, and they finish with a top 10 pick. If he does not play 65% of the season, the trade would be the a 2nd round pick in 2023 (42nd), a 2nd in 2024 (42nd range), a 2023 1st round swap (13th to 15th), and a 2023 5th (170), for a 2023 6th (207). (Note: The 1st round swap, and the 6th for the 5th swap, is equivalent to a 4th round pick (107th).
That is not a bad deal by Joe.
(Wait a minute......Joe moved back two spots in the 2023 1st round (13th to 15th), but upgraded their 2023 6th rd. pick (207) to a 5th rd. pick (170), in order to give the Packers the value of a 4th round pick (2023), without giving up an actual 4th round pick in 2023. That is a job well done in my opinion.)
Now, the worse case scenario, and it needs to be mentioned, is what happens if the season goes south due to injuries of other players on the roster?
I do not want to mention any particular player, as we could figure out who on our own, if they happen to go down, and cost the team the play-offs in 2023, while Aaron plays 65% of the 2023 season, and then retires.
I wonder if the Jet's would sit Rodgers late in the season, if this scenario played out prior to being in play-off contention.
Time will tell. But, it is not a bad day to be a Jets fan.
Thanks for getting this out so quickly. I have to say that I'm disappointed in the compensation that we are giving to GB. I'm excited that Rodgers is coming here, but at this point, I'd almost rather have had Derek Carr, and I was never in favor of that earlier this year.
That's why I said "almost." I'm thankful that we got Rodgers not only because I think he will make us a much better team than Carr would have, but I think just having him here will help Zach learn and develop. Zach and he already have a good relationship. I'm certain that Zach will ask him a ton of questions, he will see how Rodgers goes about his preparation, and will learn some humility and how to take responsibility for his play.
I made an error, the condition is based on snap count, and the Jets had 1,114 snaps on offense in 2022, which would mean Aaron would have to play approximately 724 offensive snaps.
(Based on the average that offenses run 64 plays per game, which still comes to 11 games.)
I just wanted to be sure.
I did leave out a caveat
What if Aaron decides to make GB pay, and might do so by leaving games early in winning situations, or sits late in the season in order to keep him below 65% of the teams offensive plays.
He would only have to sit 390 plays if the Jet's run 1,114. That is basically 21 plays per game or 1/3 of a game.
Well, if the Jet's are up 17 by halftime, could they start the second half with Wilson and see how it plays out?
It sure will give Wilson a chance to grow and improve.
If Zach gets some playing time at the end of games, early in the season, it may be a plan.
Plus, if Zach plays the last two or three games at the end of the season, that is about almost 50% of that total (390), so he could be used more sparingly throughout the early part of the season.
I'm sick of this trade. What if Rodgers decides to play only one year? And he plays 65% this year, which I full expect he will. Then in '24, we have no Rodgers, no 1st pick, and 2 highly touted QB's coming out.
You're pointing out exactly the part of the deal that I have a problem with...the conditional pick should have been based on his playing and/or performing in 2024, NOT 2023!
This could really turn out to be a disaster for the Jets. We'll see, but I don't have a lot of hope for what's going to happen. The 2024 situation is intolerable. Even if Woody pushed it, JD goes from an A- in my book to C- at best, or from D to F if the wheels come off.
We gave up much more than I'd like, but it's difficult to judge without hearing the money. Most importantly, we have our QB! How much contract is GB picking up? That's the big question.
Jets now have an elite QB!! I can't remember when that happened. Our offense isn't even typically functional. This can be big.
Next - We need to focus on blocking. Rodgers is pedestrian when pressured but elite when he has time in the pocket. Let's go OT then C.
Minor point of the trade - Corey Davis was not included, meaning we can pair GW, Lazard, CD with Hardman and Mims.
I think CD and Lazard can be a formidable combo for blocking outside running plays. Both are really tough for catches over the middle.
CD is much better than a WR3 than WR1 last year. I'm excited to see that difference.
Lazard is much better as a WR2
Hardman and Mims can have a role as our go route WR too. AR loves throwing those and has the arm.
If we build a smash mouth running team, with field stretching threats, Garrett Wilson and co can dominate with sufficient space.
Updated offense -
QB Rodgers
WR G Wilson, Lazard,Corey Davis, M Hardman, Mims
TE Conk / Uzomah /Ruck
RB Breece/MC /Bam
Let's get some OL
Now that the trade is official, what other dominoes do we expect to finally go? Was there a FA deal waiting on this? Or trades waiting on this one?
Maybe Quinnen extension was waiting on this deal, to determine structure?
It's crazy how much we resemble the Bucs adding Brady. 7 win team with a solid defense, a crazy playoff drought, adds a vet superstar QB. Both teams needed a RT on offense - who will be our Wirfs? Bucs signed a few vets that wanted to get on the bus to play together like Gronk. Not sure who that is for us.
I think our defense is slightly overrated, given health luck, turnovers, and backup QB opponents last season. But JJ and Q will keep growing, Lawson gets healthier, hopefully we'll draft a FS, sign Kwon, draft or sign a run stuffer.
NY Jets are getting a 40 year old QB, who went from 2 interceptions to 12. Who completed 4,000 yards the last 5 years and last year only 3,600. Will he coach Zac Wilson to be as good as his replacement in Green Bay or ignore him? I think Woody should go! the Jets need a first round Quarterback and I do not think Aaron Rodgers will be a good fit
I just hope everyone looks at this with common sense and doesn't jump on the "We're in the Super Bowl !!!!!!" bandwagon like it's already won. Still a LOT of holes to fill and less draft picks.
Do you actually pay attention or watch the games? The Jets for a myriad of reasons can never develop a drafted QB since Pennington. The reason he worked out was he was accurate and sat for a year. Rodgers is something we haven’t had in 15 years. How long do you want to wait?
Rodgers is HERE. As Jet fans let’s ENJOY TODAY. We can talk about the compensation hopefully well after Presidents’ Day 2024. Let’s go out there and put a competitive team on the field and let the chips fall where they may.
Come on, it wasn't miniscule by any standard. And forget about 2024, it's already a waste. We're just going to have to ride the merry-go-round until the horse dies. Just pitiful.
The money part of deal is still fascinating, all parties including Rogers need to agree . We may get an understanding how much Rogers wants to be here. Hoping that this year is only a 15 million CAP HIT .
Agreed with all DWH comments on the matter. First thought I’d that in 2023 games where the game has been decided in the 4th quarter, might we see Zack? Reasons:
* reduces AR’s snap count with an eye on the 65%
* reduces AR’s snap count to keep him healthy
* gets Zach playing time towards his long-term development
Feels like the Jets paid a little more than they needed to. The 1st round pick swap has real value. Additionally, I think the conditional 2024 pick should have started lower than a 2nd, and the escalators should have been tied to making and advancing in the playoffs. Thay said, we have a legitimate QB, and the Jets are legitimate super bowl contenders. So let's enjoy the hell out of it!
The Jets gave up waaaaay too much for him. JD blinked, unless he got marching orders from Woody. The 2024 deal is even worse in my opinion. GB got too much this year, period. Given the luck of the Jets, I'm not too hopeful. And what if AR plays 65%+ and the Jets don't make the playoffs, and he decides not to come back, the 2024 1st round pick is gone, killing any other future chances. I'll still root for them, but we've seen this story too many times before. We will see what we will see.
Hooray ! At least for this year we hace a QB. I agree - i dont like the number 1 next year but that could come back in another trade to. IF he gets injured we are covered. Still dont like the backup QB situation but thats a story for another day.

I agree, the Jets gave up too much and got fleeced by GB. It's truly pitiful. It's going to be the "same old Jets" this year.
I wouldn't say that they got "fleeced" but the Jets definitely didn't fleece GB on this trade, either.
Disagree.
If Derek Carr could win a big game he would still be on Raiders. Forget about DC
That's why I said "almost." I'm thankful that we got Rodgers not only because I think he will make us a much better team than Carr would have, but I think just having him here will help Zach learn and develop. Plus except for last year are draft picks are horrible. Look forward to having an actual NFL WB under center next season.
I totally disagree with your statement that other than last year our draft picks are horrible. I think that's utter nonsense

Just my two cents.
Enjoy!
I really thought the conditional pick would be based on Aaron playing a second year, not this year.
It's pretty clear that he's motivated to play this year. That's the only issue I have with the deal.
As many have said, if we make a significant playoff run it becomes less significant.
hey Kleckofan
I'm sick of this trade. What if Rodgers decides to play only one year? And he plays 65% this year, which I full expect he will. Then in '24, we have no Rodgers, no 1st pick, and 2 highly touted QB's coming out.
Effin Woodie! The Jerry Jones of the Northeast!

We're betting that his injured thumb caused that drop-off, and WR talent drop-off
Rodgers is HERE. As Jet fans let’s ENJOY TODAY. We can talk about the compensation hopefully well after Presidents’ Day 2024. Let’s go out there and put a competitive team on the field and let the chips fall where they may.
Jets possibly gave a little, but it was minuscule . The important thing was they got it done, let’s roll.

If the Packers are eating a big chunk as well, that could explain the conditional pick being snap based and easier to achieve. Lot still to unravel.
It’s not about saving Woody money, it’s about CAP space in 2024.
Very interested in seeing if/how the contract is restructured. Either way it's Aaron Freaking Rodgers man! Stoked!

Do we get a pick back if he only plays 1 year? What if he gets injured and doesn't play more than a few games, do we get anything back?

Whew. Finally!
Wheeeeeee!!!
Here we GOOOOOOOOO!!!
No players involved, swap of first round picks, was for WR JSN. interesting to see who the Patriots draft at 14, OT or WR
Hooray ! At least for this year we hace a QB. I agree - i dont like the number 1 next year but that could come back in another trade to. IF he gets injured we are covered. Still dont like the backup QB situation but thats a story for another day.
Let's hope that first round pick next year is pick #32
Was thinking the same LOL
