Good morning! ☕
This week the Jets will take part in another joint practice, this time against the Giants on Wednesday at Florham park. This will be the third different team we’ll face in a joint practice, the most in our history in a single pre-season. The first joint practice was all the way back on July 30, 1968 against the Colts, and these sessions are now more important to the team than pre-season games when it comes to getting their starters ready.
We are just 20 days away from the Jets kicking off their regular season, and I’m both nervous and excited. On one hand this is the best roster we’ve had in a long time, on the other hand we’re the Jets, and something nearly always goes wrong.
🟢Good news on Mike Williams who told reporters yesterday that he expects to join team drills next week. That’s the final hurdle for him being ready for game action - "I think I'm ready to do some team stuff, just getting in a rhythm, doing things with the team, just lining up and going through some plays."
⚪ MC2 is still considered day to day and he will be re-evaluated at the end of the week. Jeremy Ruckert was back at practice, but he was wearing a non-contact red jersey. Jarrick Bernard-Converse, Isaiah Oliver and Leki Fotu are all carrying knocks but Saleh believes they would all be available in week one. Irvin Charles is also out, but should return soon and should be good for week one.
🟢Robert Saleh was talking on Bart & Hahn and he said the Jets have 5 closers on that defensive line and Reddick would be the 6th, when he arrives.
⚪ You know I’m not one to quickly give praise to anyone connected to the the New England Patriots, but I’d love to send this to Haason Reddick every hour, on the hour, until he turns up: Regarding his contract status, Matt Judon said "The Atlanta Falcons don't know me as a football player. They know my history. So I can't demand something I haven't worked for."
🟢I’m feeling quietly confident about Javon Kinlaw and the defensive tackle is feeling pretty good - "This year's been my first time feeling like I can really be who I think I can be, who I know I can be." Kinlaw said. "Point blank. Period. When I was coming out, I knew it was going to take me some time. I remember somebody asking me what I rank myself amongst the guys at the Combine, and I said, 'As of now I'm not really the best guy, but 10 years from now I will be.' And I still feel that way."
⚪ He feels as though he’s explosive this year and if you add an explosive playmaker next to Quinnen Williams, good things will happen - "I feel amazing," he said. "I feel super explosive, I feel violent out there. I feel like I'm getting a lot of knockback, holding strong on double teams. That was my main thing this offseason, really work on sustaining on those double teams because I feel like I'm a big guy. Guys don't really come off of me."
🟢 PFF had some thoughts on the Jets RB2 position.
Allen was drafted in the fourth round this year, and last week, he played the entire first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter. This made it appear his spot as Breece Hall’s primary backup was secure. Davis took over and played the rest of the second quarter while other backups played in the second half.
Davis started this game, with Allen also taking a snap on the first drive. Davis took all of the second drive, Allen took the third, and then Allen played most of the fourth drive with Davis mixing in. They, again, used other backups in the second half. Notably, 2023 fifth-round pick Israel Abanikanda looks like he won’t make the roster unless they keep four running backs. This makes it look like Davis is the favorite to be the backup even though Allen played more, but Allen’s time was primarily in the second quarter. Neither put up major stats in this game. Davis had the best run but Allen had two receptions.
Neither player will play much when Hall is healthy. This makes it less clear how snaps will be distributed if Hall suffers an injury. The possibility of a pretty even two-man backfield looks like the most probable outcome.
Aaron Rodgers had an awful practice yesterday completing just 11-27 passes with an interception in full team drills. According to reporters there was a lot of miscommunication, a lot of inaccuracy by Rodgers, a really bad throw that was picked off by Tony Adams and plenty of pressure. Robert Saleh was asked about it and he chose to pinpoint they’re going against a top 5 defence on the other side.
However, I do have to point out that the Jets had their full starting offensive line out to start the session, and it’s concerning that there was so much miscommunication, including a false start. Penalties are an issue right now, what happens in practice seeps into games.
One positive is that Will McDonald continues his good form from Carolina and got into the backfield for a sack on Aaron Rodgers.
Rookie tackle Olu Fashanu flipped back to left tackle after practicing at right tackle all of last week and playing in Saturday's preseason game at Carolina.
