Good morning! ☕
The Jets seem intent on making an addition to the RB room, at least in the form of a coach. Over the weekend we heard that Duce Staley was being considered and today we hear that Tony Dews is going to be interviewed. So while we didn’t see the wholesale changes we wanted, we will see at least one addition to the offensive coaching staff.
💼 According to WATE out of Nashville, the Jets will be interviewing Tony Dews for an unnamed assistant coaching position. Dews was the Titans TE’s coach in 2023 but spent much of his time coaching Derrick Henry as RB coach between 2018-2022. Before that, he had stops as an offensive line coach (California PA 2002), defensive line coach (Holy Cross 2003), TE coach (Central Michigan 2003-05), and WR coach (West Virginia 2007, Michigan 2008-2010) among other stops. Derrick Henry was the rushing yards leader under Dews on two occasions (2019, and 2020) and got selected to three Pro Bowls.
🏆 Jets CB Sauce Gardner has been named to the PFWA writers All-NFL team for the second year in a row, which is an incredible accomplishment for someone so young.
🎰 Aaron Rodgers took the offensive linemen on a trip to Las Vegas over the weekend. Wes Schweitzer posted the image on his Instagram. AVT, McGovern, Tippmann, Becton and Tomlinson were all there. Looks like they went to see the Vegas Golden Knights.
😬 Former Jets Quarterback Tim Boyle has been signed to a reserve/future contract with the Houston Texans. I’m not sure what they saw to make them believe he’s worth signing and hanging onto, but I sure didn’t see it.
👏 The Jacksonville Jaguars hired former Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen to be their new defensive guru. That’s good news for the Jets as safeties coach Marquand Manuel interviewed for that job. It’s a shame for Manuel, but he’s a key member of the assistant coaching staff and this may also help the Jets keep hold of Aaron Whitecotton, the defensive line coach who’s good friends with Manuel, and whose contract is up at the end of this month.
🐦⬛ Did the Jets even consider Lamar Jackson as a possible solution before trading for Aaron Rodgers, apparently not according to Brian Costello: "The Jets never pursued Jackson or even really explored it as a possible option," Jets beat reporter Brian Costello of the New York Post wrote for a piece published Monday. "There were no conversations with Jackson or visits."
You’ve probably guessed by now that over the next two to three months we’re going to be focusing on offensive tackles and wide receivers. We’ll touch on other positions, but as far as I’m concerned, the best value I can add to your daily Jets fandom is to provide information on as many offensive linemen and receivers as possible. Those are the two biggest areas of need and the two biggest hurdles for us to jump if we want to be serious championship contenders next season.
Yesterday I offered up a little mock draft, which represents where my head is at the moment. I’ve been looking at offensive tackles for a while now, but every time you look at someone you see something new. Sometimes it’s a good thing, sometimes it’s a bad thing. Today I just wanted to quickly look at pick #72, Blake Fisher.
