Good morning. ☕
🚨Well the NFL throws up some surprises. Corey Davis is officially retiring, and while that comes as quite a surprise and a blow for the Jets, I’ll always understand the reasoning behind wanting to spend more time with family. Thank you to Corey for all he did here and I wish him the best in his retirement. Some people step away too early, some too late and some just know when it’s time.
We’ll certainly miss Corey’s run-blocking, leadership and locker-room presence, this is good news for Jason Brownlee and Xavier Gipson. There is now a route for both of them to make the roster unless the Jets make a move at receiver. Some people have said Mike Evans, I’m not sure that’s possible.
We’re officially entering the final stretch of training camp, and with that comes the harsh reality of cut-down day on the horizon.
In 5 days’ time, the Jets will trim their roster to 53 players, and considering the strength in depth, they will almost certainly lose some players they want to keep.
Think of Jason Pinnock last year, a player whom the Jets thought they’d be able to sneak onto the practice squad, only to see him claimed by the Giants. Pinnock is now a lock to make the 53-man roster on a strong Giants defence. As the Jets improve their depth, they’re will almost certainly be cases of players leaving and finding success elsewhere.
So here’s what we’re going to do today. First, we’re going to hit on 5 players who need a strong performance against the Giants before touching on who I see making the practice squad. Finally, we finish with some coach quotes.
