Good morning! ☕
I’m getting ready for the first Red Zone of the year which I’ll be working for DAZN. Hoping to see plenty of Bengals, Jaguars and Cardinals touchdowns. I love week one of the NFL season, we start to understand which teams were all hype and which teams have the potential to shock. I know some people watch games on catchup, so I won’t spoil the result from last night but what a good game to start the season.
Today I’m going to focus on five New York Jets players who could act as secret weapons in our game against the 49ers. But first, we head to the Quick Throws!
I’m really happy to say that I’ll be contributing to the official New York Jets website here in the UK again this year with a weekly column through the season. So you’ll see that included in TJW towards the end of the week going forward, starting next week and I really appreciate any reads, clicks, shares.
🟢 Javon Kinlaw was on the losing end in the Super Bowl last season, but the former first rounder is feeling free with the Jets - "I feel free," said Kinlaw, who added 30 pounds of lean muscle this offseason. "The way they coach it over here, it's amazing. You don't really have to worry about too much and it's awesome. At first, coming into camp, I was super eager, man. I just couldn't wait. But now it's like a slow flame. I'm right at the end now, but I'm also right at the brink of doing something special for myself and my family." I’m really excited to see Kinlaw this year, playing next to Quinnen…I think he can have a career season.
⚪ Robert Saleh was impressed with Kinlaw during the joint practice with Carolina, a session where Kinlaw was constantly in the Panther backfield - "He was unblockable, in my opinion. There are things he's got to work on. He's just so powerful and creating so much knockback that he's actually creating vertical seams in the defense, so we're working on some things to help him transition, not only in the game run, but in the pass."
🟢 Robert Saleh also confirmed yesterday that wide receiver Mike Williams will be on a pitch count when it comes to his reps on Monday night. Williams will play but considering he’s returning from a serious injury, the Jets don’t want to push him. It’s the same approach they took to Breece Hall last year. I don’t mind this, having Williams at 100% for the rest of the season is a priority.
⚪ The Head Coach was still unwilling to rule Haason Reddick out for Monday Night, despite the fact that the former Eagle has still not reported and we have just a couple of days before the game. I think it would take a miracle for Reddick to be on that field in San Francisco come kick-off on Monday night.
🟢 Here is the official depth chart for week one against San Francisco. Interestingly they have Lazard ahead of Gipson, unsurprisingly they have Braelon Allen ahead of Davis and Micheal Clemons is the starting edge opposite Will McDonald. The long snapper often gets left off these, which always makes me feel bad for Thomas Hennessy, who’s one of the best in the business. We love you Henny.
#1 Javon Kinlaw
Considering we started with him in the quick throws section, it seems fitting to make him the #1 secret weapon, although considering he’s spent his entire 4-year NFL career to this point with the 49ers, he won’t be a mystery or secret to them.
Kinlaw tends to play on the right side of the defensive line, but Quinnen Williams will dominate that side for the Jets meaning Kinlaw will spend most of his time at LDT, putting him up against San Francisco RG Dominick Puni, a 3rd round rookie out of Kansas.
