Patrick Mahomes took a step back last year, a 62% completion with 22 TDs to 11 INTs is slightly above average QB play.

His passing TD production has steadily declined for four straight years. 41 in 2022, 27 in 2023, 26 in 2024 and 22 in 2025.

The Chiefs are betting that their 3x Super Bowl winning QB can get back to his best handing him a reworked contract that keeps him in Kansas City through 2033 at a value of $504.75 million. Good money if you can get it.

It’s worth remembering that Mike Maccagnan passed on Mahomes because we already had Hackenberg in the building. One of the biggest draft mistakes in NFL history and unfortunately not the only mistake the Jets have made.

Would the Jets have experienced the same level of success had Maccagnan made a different decision that night? Probably not. But you never know.

• Former Jets first-round pick Darron Lee was indicted on a murder charge last night and prosecutors are pushing for a first-degree murder charge. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made in the coming weeks. I don’t really want to talk about this but you can read more HERE.

• According to Rich Cimini, Rex Ryan is hoping to visit camp as an observer on Tuesday. This week it was Mike Westhoff, next week it’s Rex Ryan, maybe the week after we can get recently retired Mike Pettine in too.

• Armand Membou has been a popular subject this off-season and he was asked about his focus this off-season:

  • “For me, I’m just trying to be explosive because I’m already pretty strong. I just want to get my body back right, get as strong and explosive as I can, master this new playbook [courtesy of new OC Frank Reich] and get really dialed in this year.”

• Aaron Glenn believes that Membou is ready to take his game to the next level after a solid rookie season:

  • “A lot of it has to do with the technique part of it, and he’s really getting that from his coach,” Glenn said, referring to O-line coach Steve Heiden. “A lot of it has to do with the mentality part of it, Every day, man, I’m chopping wood to be the best I can be. Then physically, making sure he’s in shape, he’s strong and he’s conditioned to be able to play a number of plays”

  • “He’s keeping everything in perspective, though, to make sure that, Man, this is a team game and I want to be good, not just for myself but I want to be good for the team. If that makes sense.”

• NFL.com ranked the divisions by QB talent and the AFC East was placed towards the bottom with only the AFC South and NFC South being rated lower:

  • “Then, there are the other two teams. In a funny twist, Geno Smith’s career journey has led him back to where it started, with the QB welcomed back to the Jets like a returning long-lost king. That shows how desperate Gang Green is for stability under center. There’s no guarantee it will work, but if the Jets can protect Smith better than the Raiders’ leaky offensive line did last year, he’ll find success.”

Offensive Tackles: Preview 🟢⚪🗽

For the sake of this preview I’m only going to include players who are listed as tackles on the official depth chart.

There is a lot of positional flexibility on the offensive line, we know that Max Mitchell can play inside and arguably he’s better suited there as well. There are guys like Liam Fornadel on the roster, listed as a guard but spent his entire college career as a tackle at James Maddison.

I considered doing the offensive line as a whole, but 15 players is a lot to cover especially when we have a lot of time until we have some game action to talk about. So instead we’re going to break it down into interior and exterior.

Starters: Olu Fashanu (LT), Armand Membou (RT)

Sometimes I think we get a little ahead of ourselves when we talk about the tackle situation in New York.

Fashanu and Membou have phenomenal potential. If they continue their development arc and hit their potential, they could be two of the best tackles in the NFL. I don’t have much doubt about that.

But there’s that word. Potential. It’s a dangerous word if you’re the Jets. It’s one that often in retrospect gets elongated to “unfulfilled potential”

The timings of the games mean that I will largely be nocturnal for at least the next two weeks with the group stages in full flow. It’s why I decided to not stay up and watch the Knicks game last night, but that didn’t stop me waking up and checking the score and seeing us down 25 points. Imagine my surprise when I woke up at 6am and checked the final score.

Today is going to be a quick, short one as we run through some news and notes.

• The Jets hosted former Cleveland Browns receiver and kick returner Kaden Davis for a workout yesterday. Davis was a UDFA back in 2022. He’s floated between the NFL and USFL and had two stints in Denver where his name would have become familiar to Darren Mougey and he was with the Lions in 2024 where he would have crossed paths with Glenn.

• Jamien Sherwood has been reflecting on his 2026 season:

  • "There were areas where I need to improve, there were some good plays, there were some bad plays," Sherwood, 26, said. "I just felt for myself I definitely could be more consistent than I was. That's another thing that I do look for going into the season. That's just studying more, staying after practice more and just being a better teammate."

• Aaron Glenn believes having Demario Davis next to him will help him regain some of that form that earned him a contract extension:

  • “I think with Demario Davis being next to him, that’s going to help him out a lot because he’s still a young player and he is a player that came from being a safety to being a linebacker. So having somebody that’s been in this league for a long time as Demario sitting right beside him, it could only help him. Any player that’s self-aware and will critique themselves like that on a year-to-year basis, always good.”

• Braelon Allen was jokingly asked if his kickoff return days were behind him:

  • “I’m willing to do whatever they ask me to, but uh, I’m crossing my fingers that they don’t ask me to do that again. But I am more than willing to do whatever is asked of me, of course.”

• Glenn is excited to see what Allen can do now that he’s healthy:

  • “To see him out there, see him run around, to see a big man that is agile, that obviously you know you can use in the run game, but to be able to use him in the passing game. That was the vision with him, Breece [Hall], and Isaiah [Davis] last year. Obviously, that didn’t come to fruition. Man, I’m just looking forward to seeing him get out in camp and be a part of that three-headed monster, is what I call them as far as running backs,”

• This was a really cool story by Rich Cimini on three generations of Ryan’s coaching with the Jets:

  • Rex Ryan: “When I had the opportunity to be the head coach, I chose the Jets over another team because the Jets were my dad’s team. My dad always wore his Jets [Super Bowl] ring. He never wore the Bears ring. He was proud to be a Jet. So this is [Seth’s] team, too. This is the team he wanted to coach. What he’s going to add to that franchise is going to be incredible. That’s a smart son of a gun now.”

  • Seth Ryan: “This means a lot to our family, and in my family we have kind of a saying with all coaches,” he began. “My grandfather told my dad, ‘I need you to be a little bit better than me.’ My dad told me, ‘I need you to be better than me. So I chose offense to make sure that was going to happen.”

• My favourite quote from yesterday came courtesy of Armand Membou when he was asked for his impressions on new acquisition T’Vondre Sweat, and he simply replied: “A big-ass dude.”

• Aaron Glenn spoke about adding Jason Sanders to the kicking competition:

  • “Obviously he did a really good job in Miami, and … anytime we can get a good player that can create competition, we want to bring the player in to create that.”

• Finally a couple of injury updates.

  • Kenyon Sadiq who had hernia surgery is back running and doing agility drills, there is no danger of him missing any time at camp barring a setback which would be a surprise.

  • Cade Klubnik didn’t practice with some back tightness but he’s absolutely fine and will take part in minicamp next week.

I’ve said it multiple times here, I love an underdog. Wayne Chrebet is one of my favourite all-time Jets, mostly for the way he played, but also because of his climb up the depth chart through training camp.

We’re still over a month away from camp starting. Rookies will report starting on the 18th of July with veterans arriving from the 22nd. This is good for me because the World Cup which is occupying 99% of my time at the moment will be done and dusted on the 19th, meaning once training camp arrives I’ll be fully focused on the Jets as we head full throttle for the season.

To start my series today I want to talk about linebacker Jaden Keller.

• Former Jets safety Isaiah Oliver has signed a deal in Arizona. With the way free agency and the draft played out, Oliver was very unlikely to NY in 2026 especially as he played extremely poorly in his 322 defensive snaps last season, allowing 19 of 22 passes to be completed into his coverage, having a missed tackle rate of 16% and being a below average run defender too.

• Harrison Phillips has been speaking about David Bailey:

  • “He’s really twitchy and I want to claim him from Stanford more than Tech. I’ve really liked what he can do as an athlete on the field, not just with his hand down in the dirt, but the different varieties you can do with somebody who can also run and change direction at an elite level.”

• Demario Davis also had this to say about David Bailey:

  • “I think time will tell,” veteran LB Demario Davis said. “There’s a reason why you’re the No. 2 draft pick. He was the most dominant pass rusher in the draft and I think when you can get a guy like that and you’re sound in other areas, it takes a lot of weight off of him where he can do what he does best, which is be able to get after the pass rush. Playing for a defensive line coach like Karl Dunbar, he’s not going to accept you just being a one-way player.”

• Quentin Skinner reverted to injured reserve from waived-injured.

Jaden Keller 🟢⚪🗽

Trying to pick an outside bet to make the roster is pretty difficult. 99/100 you’re going to back a losing horse because the nature of the NFL and roster construction makes it extremely difficult for a UDFA to stick on an active 53.

Most of the time the stars have to align. You need a team to be weak in a certain area, you need to perform out of your skin and you often need an unlucky injury to one or more veterans.

Jaden Keller is a UDFA who didn’t even get signed as a priority free agent. Instead he had to do the rounds on the tryout circuit and his name was one of 31 who were invited to attend rookie minicamp.

Unfortunately when you’re on the roster bubble, one unfortunate incident can impact everything.

Quentin Skinner found that out the hard way yesterday after suffering an injury in practice and getting waived with an injury designation.

It’s tough at the bottom of an NFL roster, you don’t get afforded the luxury of time that others get. Skinner was a pre-season fan favourite last year after catching 8 of his 11 targets 114 yards averaging 14.3 yards per reception. He was the only Jets wide receiver to record a TD in the pre-season and the only receiver to come down with 100% of his contested catches (2-2).

Despite his pre-season heroics he spent much of the season on the practice squad but was elevated for week 18 against Buffalo where he caught his only pass for 10 yards and converted a 2-point play.

Skinner joined the Jets as a UDFA last Spring after four years with Kansas. While he was never a favoured target, he was always a big target at 6’4 and finished his college career averaging 19.8 yards per reception with 11 touchdowns. I’m sure that his size will catch on somewhere.

I couldn’t find details of the injury and the Jets official press release didn’t outline it either.

In a corresponding move the Jets signed WR Jalen Walthall who’s a significantly different profile to Skinner, but who’s athletic testing was less than ideal.

He spent the last two years at Incarnate Wood after catching 37 passes and 2 touchdowns over two years with Hawaii (2022-23).

The move sparked his college career albeit against lesser competition, Walthall finished the 2024 season with 85 receptions for 1,290 yards and 14 touchdowns and while his senior season was far less productive (847 yards and eight touchdowns) he still received an invite to the East-West Shrine game.

He was picked up by the Texans as a UDFA but cut last week. It’ll be interesting to see if he’ll stick, but it’s a longshot considering his skillset and the roster composition of the Jets right now.

We focused on the receivers in a piece recently and I had Skinner as a wild card option. Well it would be a real wildcard for him to make the roster now.

• Demario Davis has given a hat-tip to technology for his ironman nature:

  • “I think the science, just in terms of recovery, plays a major part, and I try to maximize on all types of technology that’s out there and so I think all of that lends itself to longer careers and I don’t think that I’m the exception,” Davis said. “I think I’m the new norm to players who take care of their body, maximize the game and all this around it and are able to stay relatively healthy, they’re going to have careers very similar to mine.”

• Josh Myers has been impressed with the leadership shown by AG:

  • “I think AG is one of the best leaders I’ve ever been around, Just the way he carries himself, just with really any situation that’s been thrown at him to this point, man. I’ve just ... I’ve been super impressed.”

• Myers also spoke on Membou and his potential:

  • “Membou has the ability to be great, like one of the greats,” Myers said. “There’s a lot that needs to happen between now and then, but he’s got the talent, he’s got the mentality. He’s a heck of a player.”

• Garrett Wilson spoke about his happiness at Breece getting signed up:

  • “I was just super excited to see Breece get locked up, because that’s one of the guys I came in with, It sucks to see some of the guys that we came in with not here. So the reality of it is, we got to figure this thing out, and we’re proud to do it. And you got a guy like Breece to make it a whole lot easier, man. He’s special at what he does, one of the best in the league, and I’m excited that they locked him down because we need him, man. That boy can play.”

Is a championship coming to New York? It’s been 14 years since the Giants won New York’s last night, defeating the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, back in 2012.

Well the Knicks are 2-0 up having taken both games on the road to open up the series. The same team that for many years were the laughing stock of the NBA.

It gives me faith that maybe, just maybe there is hope for the Jets. For close to 20 years the Knicks were characterised by bad trades, bad free-agent signings, puzzling management decisions. They were for a long time the epitome of ‘dysfunction’, with a capital D.

The start of the turnaround can arguably be traced to one hire. The hire of Leon Rose after firing Steve Mills. Can Darren Mougey be our Leon Rose? Let’ see if we can build the right way, just like the Knicks have done.

• Minkah Fitzpatrick believes that Aaron Glenn learnt a lot from year one as a head coach and that should serve him well going forward:

  • “A.G. learned a lot from his first year -- good, bad and ugly,” Fitzpatrick said. “I think he wants to not just show the world but show us that he’s a guy that wants to win, knows how to win. The first year is always going to be tough for any head coach. There’s a lot of adjustments. I think he’s excited to apply what he’s learned in Year 2.”

• Aaron Glenn was asked about the Jets not receiving any primetime games:

  • "To me, it's more of you earn the right," Glenn said. "And, yes, you can use that as motivation, but you earn the right. That's the good thing about this league; you earn your right -- players, coaches, everybody. You earn your right to get what you get in this league."

• Rich Cimini had a really good stat on Jason Sanders ability to perform in the cold despite him spending his career in Florida:

  • “15-for-16 (94%) in games when the temperature is 40 degrees or below”

• Another interesting note from Cimini on Aaron Glenn who’s taking a more hands on approach on defense this season:

  • “Glenn is calling the defensive plays in OTA practices, as expected, but he still makes it a point to spend time with the offense during individual and positional periods, leaving the defense to defensive coordinator Brian Duker.”

• Zack Rosenblatt had a good piece out on Demario Davis and the leadership void that he’s going to be filling for the Jets this season:

  • “There are few players, at any position on any team, who have developed a greater reputation for leadership than Davis. It’s not only derived from his personality but also from the respect he’s garnered on the field as one of the NFL’s best linebackers since the Jets let him leave in 2018. The Saints reaped the benefit, and Glenn saw it firsthand as New Orleans’ defensive backs coach from 2016-20 (Glenn was also an assistant with the Cleveland Browns when Davis was there in 2016, and a Jets scout in 2012 when Davis was drafted).”

The Tight End Room 🟢⚪🗽

When was the last time the Jets had a TE inside the top 10 in the NFL in receiving yards? Or touchdowns? Or receptions? Tyler Conklin came close on a couple of those back in 2023, but while I liked Conklin as a player I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a gamechanger.

Starters: Kenyon Sadiq & Mason Taylor

Over the last two drafts the Jets have remodelled their tight-end room by drafting Mason Taylor and Kenyon Sadiq. Of the two, Taylor will likely see more time as a traditional TE with Sadiq being moved around the formation to make the most of his explosive athleticism.

The Jets ran 12 personnel last season on just 17.03% of their plays, which was 22nd in the league, but they actually had a positive EPA when they did run it (3.62). Which is in stark contrast to their favoured 11 personnel which they ran on 67.13% of snaps (3rd highest) and had an EPA of -121.24.

I think the Jets are going to want to get Taylor and Sadiq on the field together, and if they want to run more 12 personnel Frank Reich will need buck his own trend. In his final year in Indianapolis in 2022 he ran that formation on 14.51% of his plays (23rd). In 2023 as head coach of the Panthers they ran it on just 9.31% of plays (31st). But then again he didn’t have a duo like Taylor and Sadiq.

We talk a lot about Sadiq’s athleticism because it’s rare to see 6’3, 240lb receiver run a 4.39 with a 1.54 10-yard split, not to mention a 43.50 vertical and 11’02 Broad. Those are in the 99th percentile for his position and size, he’s an athletic freak that could be a difference maker and gamechanger if the Jets put him in a position to succeed.

But let’s not forget that Mason Taylor ran well for his size, and he’s 2 inches taller and 10lbs heavier than Sadiq. I saw a lot I liked from Taylor last year including in the blocking game, and it’s a shame that his development was halted by injury.

The big question mark around both of these guys is their ability to catch the ball consistently. Mason Taylor had 5 drops on 62 targets for a 10.2% drop rate. Sadiq had 6 drops on 67 targets for a 10.5% drop rate. Both of those numbers need to drop considerably, you can handle a drop rate between 5-7% if they bring plenty of production, but 10%+ drop rate on 300-500 yards production is tough.

Saying that, both have the potential to be highly productive in different ways. They both catch the ball well in traffic. Sadiq was at 58.3% success on contested catches, Mason Taylor caught 78.6% of contested balls last year. Sadiq making plays down the field, Taylor being a reliable outlet. You don’t pigeonhole either into a pre-determined role, but they can complement each other.

Backup: Jeremy Ruckert

The Jets extended Jeremy Ruckert back in December meaning that they’d have to eat $2.7M in dead cap if they cut him, so straight away he has a foot up in terms of the competition to be the TE3, just from a financial perspective. Mougey was also the one to extend him, which is another tick in his box.

Ruckert has been in the league for four years now and has only received 78 targets. He’s turned those targets into 443 yards and 1 TD, over the course of those four years he’s dropped 10.8% of his passes and has been rated as an average to below average blocking tight end.

I actually thought Ruckert looked a little better last season and it’ll be interesting to see how he’s used under Reich, but I think he’s set to be the TE3 this season.

Outsiders: Jelani Woods, Chase Curtis

Jelani Woods is the one player who could push Ruckert for that TE3 role based on his history with Frank Reich. The 6’7, 253lb former Virginia man was a 5th round draft pick of the Colts when Reich was the Head Coach.

He started out as a promising prospect with 312 yards and 3 touchdowns as a rookie, but then the injuries came. He didn’t appear in a single game between 2023-2025 and so this off-season he’s fighting to secure a place having missed three straight seasons, it’s a long shot.

Chase Curtis is a camp body, he had 413 yards over 5 years at TCU and would be the longest of long shots to make the roster.

• Browns CB Denzel Ward said he wants to remain in Cleveland, even after the Browns traded defensive end Myles Garrett to the Rams.

• Despite tearing his Achilles and having it surgically repaired 19 weeks, 49ers tight end George Kittle believes he is on track to return in week one vs. the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.

• Texas Tech’s appeal to the NCAA to have QB Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility reinstated has been denied.

• Lions rookie fifth-round pick Kendrick Law tore his ACL at OTA practice this week and will be out for the season.

My mother wasn’t one to impart a lot of wisdom before she passes away nearly a decade ago, but one thing she said to me as she was packing me off to university has stuck with me. “You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression” were the simple words that I’ll pass on to my own children…when they’re old enough to really understand it.

It got me thinking about Geno Smith. Drafted 39th overall by the Jets, two underwhelming seasons followed by two seasons largely on the sideline due to either injury or ineffectiveness, a broken jaw because of a $600 debt and then mercifully he was gone. Just like that. A year with the Giants, a year with the Chargers and finally he found a home in Seattle, where he grew, matured and learnt some tough lessons.

Now he’s back and he’s making a positive impression on everyone who comes into contact with him. For many Jets fans it’s hard to shake that first impression. The issue with IK Enemkpali showed a real immaturity that impacted his career trajectory with Ryan Fitzpatrick taking over and Geno basically having his Jets career ended then and there, at least as a starter and potential solution to the quarterback conundrum that has plagued us since Joe Namath decided to hang up his famous white cleats once and for all.

Take this comment from his #1 receiver Garrett Wilson who was speaking to the Jets official website about his first impressions:

“Yeah, man, when I heard we signed Geno, initially for me it was like I immediately hit up my dawg Jax, who had played with him for two years out in Seattle. He had a lot of good insight; he just loved Geno, [and] he spoke so highly of him. All of a sudden, I’m pumped, I’m excited, and then once I got to meet the guy, which would have been a month ago now, mid-April. I had constructed this view of him in my head, and how he was going to be. It was cool, right? I couldn’t wait to meet him based on what I had constructed in my head. Then I met him, and he just blew that out of the water,”

There’s no guarantee that it equates to wins on the football field.

Geno is coming off a 2-year run where he threw 32 interceptions against 40 touchdowns, that kind of ratio won’t win you many football games…it certainly didn’t in Las Vegas last year where he played his part in securing the #1 overall pick for the Raiders. But the Geno that arrived at 1JD this off-season isn’t the same player he was when he left back in 2016, he’s certainly not the same man.

Maybe you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression…but it doesn’t mean you can’t make a good second impression.

• The Jets are signing Gee Scott Jr. The former OSU TE has lost some weight and is transitioning to receiver. He ran a good 4.62 at 6’2 and 238lbs, and with a reduction in weight he may be even quicker. His metrics showed a player with poor agility but good explosion and I think JO was spot on yesterday when he said this signing probably has more to do with installing the offense in the absence of Kenyon Sadiq than it does in any real belief in Scott’s potential as a WR. The receiver room at OSU is always packed to the brim and Scott only recorded 47 receptions and 4 touchdowns over 5 years.

• Jason La Canforca believes the Jets should kick the tires on potential trades for the Colts Anthony Richardson and Denver Broncos QB Sam Ehlinger:

  • “Sam Ehlinger, whom the Colts believed merited at least consideration as a viable NFL quarterback at one point, is stuck third in the Broncos’ depth chart right now. He played for new Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich in Indianapolis and knows the system and can offer some things athletically that Smith cannot at this stage of his career. And former Colts first-round pick Anthony Richardson is another possible option later in the summer as well.”

• I missed this quote at some point over the last two weeks, but Geno Smith has been impressed with what he’s seen from Cade Klubnik:

  • “He can spin the heck out of the ball. I feel like he’s a guy who’s always prepared,” Smith said. “He’s been preparing as if he’s going to be a starter, and that’s something that’s important in this league. I think he’s got a bright future”

• ESPN have released their football power Index for the 2026 season and it’s not overly kind to the New York Jets:

  • In terms of winning the Super Bowl, only he Dolphins have a lower probability than the 31st ranked Jets. The Jets have a 0.1% chance of making the Super Bowl and a 0.0% chance of winning it.

  • The Jets have a 3.9% chance of making the playoffs. Only the Dolphins (2.1%) and Cardinals (1.2%) have lower odds.

  • They project the Jets will win 5-6 games this season in total.

  • The Jets have a 17.1% chance of finishing with the #1 pick in the draft and a 60.3% chance of finishing with a pick inside the top-5.

• AD Mitchell has been talking about his attitude towards learning his third offense in as many seasons:

  • "I just work on attacking everything, attacking every day. I'm not really worried about the circumstances but more worried about how I make my circumstances and how I make the best out of each and every day. I would say that just comes with it."

• Aaron Glenn is certainly a firm believer in the potential of AD Mitchell:

  • "For him to hear that message over and over again has been good for him. He's a talented player, a very talented player, and we want to squeeze every ounce of his athleticism to where he can help us and be able to make big plays for us, because he has that ability."

If you’re a kicker trying to make a roster, your leash is extremely short. Younghoe Koo was signed last week and around 7 days later he’s looking for new employment once again.

On Tuesday the media witnessed the South Korean struggle through his set of kicks. Just over 24 hours later news spread that he was being cut.

Koo was a very good kicker, consistent and reliable. But since that hip injury he’s struggled to maintain any kind of consistency, and the #1 trait of a good kicker is consistency.

In a corresponding move the Jets signed kicker Jason Sanders who spent the first 7 years of his career in Miami. Unfortunately Sanders sustained a hip injury in pre-season and missed the entire 2025 season.

There is an irony to this whole situation.

Harbaugh actually cut Sanders because he felt his kicking style was not suited to the winds that we get at MetLife.

So I went back and had a look at every game he’s played at MetLife (8) and he’s gone 17-21 on FGs which is good for 81% and 18-19 on extra points (95%).

That 81% is worse than his career average of 84.6% but not by a long shot.

Sanders when healthy has been an extremely reliable leg. He carries an 84.6% success rate on field goals including three years where he hit 90% or higher. He’s hit nearly 70% of his kicks from 50+ over his career and he’s 98-102 (96%) on kick of 40 yards or less. Basically over his career he’s made the kicks he should make and made a high clip at 50+ too.

My concern is that a kicker who’s that reliable got waived from his long-term team, got picked up by the Giants and handed $300k in guarantees, only to be waived pretty quickly. We’ll see how he does with the Jets, but right now the advantage in the kicking competition goes to Cade York, because he’s the only guy not to be cut this off-season.

• Da’Quan Felton barely had time for a cup of tea with the Jets, 48 hours after signing him they waived him. Frank Reich obviously saw enough over the first two practices to know that he was never making this roster. I’ll hand it to the Jets, they don’t stall when they know the fit isn’t right.

• Remember Ashtyn Davis, he was often not a popular name around these parts. But he’s signed on with the San Francisco 49ers on a one year deal.

• David Onyemata gave a good interview with the Jets official site around what he takes pride in and the keys to playing the run in the NFL as a DL:

  • “It’s about taking pride in the little details. Over the years I was fortunate to have someone like [Saints DL coach] Ryan Nielsen early in my career, and he helped me with those details. Everybody bought into it, and once you start seeing the results, it’s like why go back to anything else?”

• Harrison Phillips reached out to every defensive rookie after the draft and he said the responses really surprised him.

  • “I text them and welcome them to the organization so they have a contact from someone here that can kind of welcome them,” Phillips said. “The responses that I got back were different than almost any other year [and] I’ve done this for nine years now. Like it was not just a like of a message or a ‘Nice to meet you bro,’ like really nice written messages and I was like, ‘Hey this is a little different. This hasn’t happened every place I’ve been.’ “

• He also went out of his way yesterday to highlight David Bailey:

  • “I’ve really liked what [Bailey] can do as an athlete on the field, not just with his hand down in the dirt, but the different varieties you can do with somebody who can also run and change direction at an elite level,” Phillips said. “Obviously, he can chase down quarterbacks, but there might be some other players he can chase down in space which really helps you.”

• Rich Cimini had a really interesting note on Brendan Sorsby on the Jets Collective podcast:

  • “I talked to a scout about him just based on pure football ability, forgetting about the off-the-field stuff. The scout I talked to, who studied him very closely during last season, thought he was a third-day draft pick. Somewhere between the fourth and sixth round. He wasn’t overly impressed with him. He’s listed at 6-3, [but] the scout told me he’s probably closer to 6 foot or 6-1. Good athlete, but kind of reckless when he runs with the ball a little bit. He put up some good passing numbers, but this scout said they have that guy on the roster – Cade Klubnik. That’s who he compared him to. Now this scout is not affiliated with the Jets, I just want to make that perfectly clear, this was a guy who was independently scouting and saw this guy,”

• Cimini also spoke about the ripple effect on the Jets due to the Garrett trade:

  • “Today’s two blockbuster trades will send ripples through the NFL, and the Jets will be one of the teams affected. No. 1, Myles Garrett to the Rams, in return, the Browns get a package that includes a 2027 first-round pick. That means they join the Jets as the only two teams with multiple first-round picks in the talent-rich 2027 draft. The Jets have three first-rounders, the Browns have two. Now the Browns are potential competition for a coveted quarterback,”

• According to Spotrac, after all June 1st designations have been taken into consideration the Jets have the 4th highest dead cap in the league at $111 million. The Dolphins are #1 carrying a staggering $179M in dead cap.

• The media were allowed access to OTA’s yesterday and based on most reports, Cade Klubnik had a really tough day throwing an INT and suffering from some accuracy issues. Geno was much better, but he also threw an INT to Demario Davis. The offense were in 3rd and long drills, so it was a tough assignment to begin with.

• Younghoe Koo went 3-5 and Cade York having recovered from his groin injury went 4-5. Apparently Koo’s misses were very bad misses, one from around 54 yards and the other from around 45 yards.

• Nice for our newsletter subject today, the receivers had a good day yesterday with Isaiah Williams the star, followed by AD Mitchell and even a good grab from Arian Smith.

The Wide Receiver Room: Rundown 🟢⚪🗽

I have to admit that I’m pretty excited to see the Jets passing game this season.

Last year the Jets finished dead last with 140.3 passing yards per game under former OC Tanner Engstrand. Poor QB play, lack of depth, poor play design and Garrett Wilson missing a huge chunk of the season were to blame.

Entering this season there is hope that the combination of Frank Reich’s experience, Garrett Wilson’s health and Geno Smith’s arm will lead the Jets to better things. Nobody is expecting us to have the #1 passing attack but I think if we finished outside the top 16-17, there will be plenty of disappointed fans.

Whenever we start a look like this it’s worth remembering that anything can happen over the course of an off-season. For Jets fans who remember Wayne Chrebet which should be every Jets fan, you can start at the bottom of the depth chart in June and still make the team in August.

This is just how I see things right now and I’m only naming two starters for the sake of this piece. Last year the Jets broke camp with 6 receivers (Wilson, Reynolds, Lazard, Johnson, Smith, Gipson). If we’re being completely honest, it wouldn’t be hard to get a better collection of receivers.

THE STARTERS
Garrett Wilson, Omar Cooper Jr.

🟢 This is where the Jets like every other team will win through the air. Garrett Wilson is one of the better receivers in the league, is he top 5? Probably not. Is he top 10? I think he is, in the right situation and with the right QB. The Jets in 2026 with Geno Smith might tick both boxes.

Wilson had three straight 1000 yards seasons out of college before being limited to 7 games (395 receiving yards) last season. That level of consistency considering the turnover in QBs, HC’s and OC’s is pretty remarkable. He’s spoken of his love for the Frank Reich system and while Geno is turnover prone, he’ll give his receivers a chance to make plays down the field.

One of the good things about the rookie pay scale is that you rarely have to worry about messy contract negotiations dragging into training camp with potential holdouts. While it’s still possible over some technical contract language, it’s extremely rare. So Omar Cooper Jr having not signed his contract wasn’t a concern in the slightest.

Last night we got confirmation that the rookie from Indiana had put pen to paper on his rookie deal, which was the biggest news in Jets land…although not the biggest piece of news in the NFL, as two blockbuster moves stole the headlines, and both involves the AFC with one star leaving and one arriving

In one of the least surprising moves of the off-season, the Patriots sent a 2028 1st and 2027 5th round pick to the Eagles for AJ Brown. A move that has been reported for well over a month now, but which needed to wait for cap purposes. Brown has six 1000 yard receiving seasons to his name and is still one of the NFL’s biggest weapons, he will present a matchup headache for the Jets twice a year for the foreseeable future and a team that went to the Super Bowl just got significantly stronger.

On the flip side the Jets won’t have to block Myles Garrett when they face off against Cleveland in October. The 2x NFL defensive player of the year and 5x All Pro is heading to LA with the Rams, who just became my 2026 Super Bowl Pick. The Rams paid a hefty price as we all knew they’d have to, sending 2024 Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, a 2027 first round pick, a 2028 second round pick and a 2029 third round pick. Garrett will likely be worth every single penny, but Jared Verse is well on his way to becoming a star in this league, so both teams probably walk away from that deal pretty happy.

• The kicking situation for the Jets continues to intrigue me and after the signing of veteran Koo, the Jets waived Lenny Krieg…who is still searching for his first opportunity to kick in an NFL game. The Jets also waived Kobe King who picked up an injury.

• In corresponding moves, the Jets signed LB Chase Wilson and WR Da’Quan Felton. Wilson was with the Jets during rookie minicamp after playing for West Virginia last season where he put up 46 tackles (24 solo), 4.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 2 INTs and 2 PD over 11 games. Felton spent last season on IR, but is a big 6’4 and 215lb receiver who 70 passes for 1,027 yard and 10 touchdowns in 25 games for Virginia Tech.

• Demario Davis has been speaking to the media about returning to the Jets:

  • “I never would have thought in a million years that I would be back two times, let alone three times, But for me, I always try to find a positive perspective, and I guess it’s just where I’m meant to be, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m happy, my family’s happy, everything feels right. I’m playing with a coach [HC Aaron Glenn] that I believe in more than anything. We’ve been together for a long time in this league. I’m playing with a locker room full of brothers that I enjoy being around every day.”

• Aaron Glenn said there is an open competition between Zappe, Cook and Klubnik to be the Jets #2 QB this season and that was music to my ears, as was the news that Russel Wilson is finalising his TV deal which removes him as an option. The idea of Russell Wilson backing up Geno Smith really didn’t excite me. The idea of Klubnik doing that job really does.

• Rich Cimini believes the Jets should look to add some interior offensive line depth “I think the depth is a concern on the interior,” Cimini said on the Jets Collective podcast. “I’d feel a little bit more comfortable if they had another swing center/guard who had some experience.”

• Fourth-round pick DL Darrell Jackson, Jr. remains the only player yet to sign his rookie deal with the Jets. But I would expect that to be completed soon.

• We’ve spoken a lot about VJ Payne and I’ve stressed my opinion that this was one of the biggest steals in the draft, well it sounds like Sports Illustrated agree with me, saying teams will regret not taking him earlier:

  • “We've appreciated VJ Payne as a prospect since watching him put forth an impressive showing at the Senior Bowl. A 42-game starter and team captain at Kansas State, he displayed communication and leadership skills in Mobile.”

  • “Payne was productive for the Wildcats, recording more than 200 career tackles. He’s a little high-hipped at 6-foot-3, but routinely displayed the versatility to play near the line of scrimmage, as a nickel defender, or in more traditional split-safety looks,”

• The New York Giants signed former Jets receiver Braxton Berrios last night.

I’m back home and getting caught up with everything I’ve missed over the last week, and it turns out that we have a few things to look at today.

The Wyatt-Huptons had a lovely week in Alghero where the World Triathlon championship was being held, I knew I’d put on a few lbs with all the gelato I was eating, but I also knew there must be a reason why on my beach run I was getting passed on the regular, turns out it was because they were professional athletes. I did get to share a flight with Team GB’s Alex Yee who’s a 2x Olympic gold medalist, although he had to retire from the race in Alghero because of an ankle injury.

Tomorrow we’ll be fully back into the swing of things but for today let’s get caught up on all the news and notes.

🟢 Kenyon Sadiq undergoes Hernia surgery

The bad news is that our 16th overall pick has had to have surgery just a few weeks after we selected him, ruling him out of the OTA portion of the off-season.

The good news is that it’s being described as a minor surgery with the Jets expecting Sadiq to be full-go once training camp roles around on the 28th July.

Whenever a rookie gets injured it makes me nervous, call it the dread of the Jets fan. Wouldn’t it be our luck that we finally draft an electric playmaker at the TE position, only for him to be crocked continuously. Let’s hope this is exactly as it’s being described, a minor injury that required minor surgery to ensure he’s a full-go by the time training camp comes around, which is the important bit.

Apparently the issue was something that Sadiq had been dealing with in college:

Right now I’m not overly concerned, but any missed practice time for a rookie is less than ideal. We do have Mason Taylor and Jeremy Ruckert to handle the TE duties through this portion of the off-season, and with Mason having missed a big portion of his rookie year, these are important reps for him too.

🟢 Jets sign kicker Younghoe Koo

I always liked Koo back in Atlanta where he had 5 straight seasons kicking at 85%+ on his field goals which included back-to-back seasons where he nailed over 90% of his kicks.

Then in 2024 he suffered a hip injury which landed him on IR, finishing the season with a 73.5% success rate, then in 2025 he got off to a bad start, was cut by Atlanta, landed with the Giants and only appeared in 6 games.

Koo has a significantly better track record in terms of being a reliable kicker in comparison to everyone else the Jets have on their roster right now.

Cade York has also gone down with a groin injury meaning Koo will be given every opportunity to regain his form and stake his claim to the kicking job.

The South Korean kicker is only 31 years-old, young for a kicker, so if Chris Banjo can help him regain his form from his early Atlanta days, the Jets may have found their kicker for 2026 and beyond.

It’s a low risk, high reward signing from Darren Mougey.

🟢 Jets trade Irvin Charles to the Seahawks for a conditional pick

You can file this one firmly under the “moves I wasn’t expecting” label.

Irvin Charles has become one of the better special team gunners in the NFL over the last few years, although he failed to register a single catch on offense.

The Seahawks traded a conditional seventh-round pick for Charles services and the Jets felt comfortable with that in large part because their special teams thrived last season without Charles.

Charles missed the entire 2025 season as he recovered from a torn ACL and in his absence the Jets were ranked as one of the best special team units in the NFL.

Based on DVOA metrics the Jets had the best punting unit in football last season and their coverage unit was a big part of that.

Arian Smith had a disappointing season on offense as he failed to make his mark, but he saw plenty of opportunities on the punt coverage team and he performed well enough that the Jets decided to get something in return for Charles, who hasn’t played football since December 2024.

It’s a big vote of confidence for Arian Smith.

NFL.com Projects the Jets will win 4-5 games next season

I don’t get too bent out of shape about analysts predicting the Jets failure. When you hold the longest playoff drought in North American sports, you have to expect the worst and hope for the best.

NFL analysts Ali Bhanpuri and Tom Blair projected the Jets to win 4 and 5 games respectively in their piece yesterday.

Both think the Jets will head into Tennessee and deliver a win against their old coach, but that’s about as good as it gets. However they did state that the Jets have the potential to make them look very silly considering the pieces they added this season on both sides of the ball, especially the offense.

Both have us losing our home game to Miami, both have us losing in Arizona and both have us losing our home game against the Bills. Divisional games are tough to call and there are plenty of games on our schedule that are 50-50 or 40-60, so easy to swing with momentum, mistakes etc.

Again, I’m not upset about the projections. But I’d certainly be upset if the Jets ended the 2026 season with only four wins. One win progress per season is simply not good enough for a team who’s lost for as long as we have.

Today I wanted to focus a little bit on Cade Klubnik following a conversation in the comments yesterday.

• Former Jets offensive tackle Damien Woody hasn’t always been kind to the Jets and for good reason. But he likes what he’s seeing right now:

  • “They have brought in a bunch of veteran players to kind of raise the floor and I thought they had a masterful draft where they got a bunch of guys who I think are going to start & contribute early. Listen, don’t be surprised if the Jets are come December they’re kind of flirting around that graphic in the hunt, that’s all I’m gonna say.”

• Josh Sweat is apparently upset about the direction the Cardinals are going in and SI believe the Jets should dangle Will McDonald in a trade to see if they’ll bite. Although if he’s unhappy with Arizona, I don’t understand why he’d be happy moving to the team with the longest playoff drought in North American sports…but don’t let logic interrupt a story at this time of the year:

  • “Sweat doesn’t have that problem. Throughout his career, both in Philadelphia and in Arizona, the now 29-year-old has posted quality run-defense grades alongside his strong pass-rushing skills. In the same three-year span as McDonald, Sweat has recorded 26.5 sacks while posting a run defense grade of 69.8, per PFF. Yes, Sweat is older. And the Jets (or any other team) would need to accept a higher cap hit for his services over the current player they would be giving up, but New York needs more productivity against the run this season.”

• How many regular season wins do you think the Jets will put up in 2026? Personally I’m going with 8 as my magic number. But FanDuel has the line at 5.5 wins. If the Jets win 5 games does Aaron Glenn survive?

3 Breakout Candidates 🟢⚪🗽

There is always a ton of excitement around the rookies but for the sake of a breakout candidate piece, I’m excluding them. Saying that David Bailey will break out or Omar Cooper Jr will break out doesn’t make a lot of sense considering they haven’t even got a base to work from in the NFL.

Instead I’ve picked out three candidates from the roster who are carryovers, who I believe will take a really big step up this season.

How about those NY Knicks. At one point on that game last night the Cavs reached a 99.9% win probability…and then Jalen Brunson turned it up and dragged the Knicks over the line with a little help from Bridges/Shamet to give the Knicks a 1-0 lead in the Eastern Finals. (Knicks Film School has you covered for all the reaction to that incredible ending).

Playoffs…there’s nothing like it. We will feel that sensation again!

One of the good and bad things about the NFL off-season is it’s length. The Jets usually start their season in early September and by late October we’re usually looking towards the next season. That gives us a good 10 months to overanalyse and become infatuated on certain issues.

We all hope that next season we’ll be locked into the 2026 season through to its bitter end. I don’t have Championship aspirations, but I’d by lying if I said I wasn’t partly hopeful of getting into the dance, even if I fully expect us to be bounced to the sideline during the first dance.

For now we have all the time in the world to talk about a subject close to my heart, the old kicker conundrum.

• It’s not just Jets fans getting carried away about Cade…SI named him one of the biggest sleepers from the NFL draft.

  • “It was very impressive to hear Cade Klubnik speak at the podium during the New York Jets’ rookie minicamp. He spoke with poise and exuberated the type of leadership required to thrive at the quarterback position. Klubnik will have to showcase a similar comfort level on the field for it to matter, but it’s very interesting that the Jets met with essentially every mid-round quarterback in this draft and identified him as the potential steal.”

• For the first time in a while, the Jets and Giants won’t be holding a joint-practice this off-season according to Paul Schwartz:

  • “The Giants will have a joint practice with the Dolphins leading into the August 22 preseason game in Miami Gardens. That will be the only joint practice in John Harbaugh’s first summer with the Giants. No joint practice this year with the Jets,”

Kicking Competitions 🟢⚪🗽

We’ve already worked through Nick Folk bolting for Atlanta, and I’ve already expressed my opinion that the Jets kicker in 2026 will come from outside the building at some point before we kick things off in Tennessee.

It’s absolutely plausible that one of Lenny Krieg or Cade York kicks well enough to be given the starting gig. Krieg already outkicked Will Ferrin in rookie camp, clearing the first hurdle, but he’s a long way from securing that roster spot.

A lot of NFL teams are only carrying one kicker through the off-season, but some are carrying at least two, the Browns are carrying 3 punters for one reason or another, known only to them. So which kicking competitions should we as Jets fans be focusing on, other than our own of course.

NFL ticket prices were released for the London games this year and they’ve increased yet again, despite the terrible entertainment value that’s been received recently.

I went to the first game back in 2007 and I’ve been to at least one game every year since. Up until a year or two ago I would do 2 or 3 of the NFL London games. it’s taken my to Wembley, Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium and even Twickenham.

But last year we decided that unless the price was drastically reduced we’d call it quits. Well the ticket I bought for £180 last year, is £195 this year. So goodbye!

Just for some context because live event prices vary drastically from country to country. I pay £24/game for my season ticket to Norwich. If I want to go and see a T20 cricket match in Essex that is basically sold out every game, it’ll cost me £35. If you want to go and see Man United you can get a ticket for around £50-£60 and if you want to go and see England play at Wembley you can go for as low as £35. Obviously the more premium options are more expensive, but you get the point.

I’m in a fortunate position where I could pay £195 to see an NFL game this season, but at some point you need to say enough is enough. I’ve got to that point where I can think of a lot of better ways to spent that money than watch the Colts take on the Commanders. No thank you.

Anyway, I digress. There isn’t a great deal going on with your New York Jets right now as we sit in a holding pattern until the action gets underway, so we’ll keep it nice and short and rattle through the news.

Jets NOTES 🗞️

• Bill Belichick was asked by Barstool Sports why he decided to quit as the Jets head coach and the answer is exactly what you expect…Woody. He also said that he hates coffee and was asked to pick which he’d prefer between the Jets and coffee…and he chose the Jets. So there is something he hates more than Woody Johnson and our football team. Good to know.

  • “I had worked for Modell and the two trains coming down the track were Dolan and Woody Johnson. I just felt like I’m -- I don’t feel comfortable with whichever one of those guys ends up with the team. Nothing personal. I just had a bad experience (with Modell) and I was -- either I’m going to work for a good owner or an owner that I felt comfortable with, who would share a vision with or -- I’m not working for that.”

• I don’t tend to include content from Bleacher Report here, but it’s in such short supply I’m going to pick out a few pieces. Yesterday they picked out each teams best kept secret and I agree with the choice of Jowon Briggs:

  • “The Jets traded for Jowon Briggs last offseason. At this point in his career, the 24-year-old defensive lineman is not an every-down defender. However, he adds juice as an interior pass-rusher. Briggs’ four sacks finished second on the team last year, and he ranked fifth in pressure rate among defensive tackles, according to TruMedia.”

• Kenyon Sadiq gave a very candid and mature response when he was asked what areas he needed to improve on to take that big step forward:

  • “I mean, it’s really just everything, to be honest, cleaner in my breaks and my routes, blocking, blocking the edges, whether it’s a combination up to the MIKE, whatever it may be. It’s really just sharpening up everything at this next level for sure.”

• Chris Simms believes the Jets are heading in the right direction. Speaking to PFT Live the former Jets QB had this to say:

  • “Now, this is the first year in a while I think you can look at it and go ‘Hmm, there’s some light at the end of the tunnel. If you look at teams that were in the bottom of the barrel last year, that you could see maybe getting up to fringe-playoff, pain in the butt, yeah, the Jets are one of those teams you look at to go, ‘They got a possibility there.'”

AROUND THE LEAGUE 🛬🛄

• Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby has filed for an injunction against the NCAA seeking his college eligibility. The NCAA need to give him a clear ruling in advance of the NFL Supplemental draft paperwork deadline which is on June 22nd.

• It’s largely expected that the NFL will award the 2028 draft to Minneapolis during their quarterly meetings upcoming.

• Pittsburgh now has officially signed QB Aaron Rodgers to a one-year contract worth up to $25 million.

• Per Bears beat reporter Courtney Cronin: “At the NFL league meeting in Orlando tomorrow, there will be a special briefing on the Bears stadium. Club and league staff will update the 32 clubs on progress on the only two viable stadium solutions at Arlington Heights and Hammond, Indiana.”

While we’re used to being off-season winners, it’s nice to see plenty of positivity around the team at the moment.

That doesn’t guarantee that regular season wins will follow, but I’d rather spend the next few months surrounded by positively than with that impending dread.

• VP of NFL Broadcasting Mike North was asked about the Jets not receiving any primetime games. He said that teams like the Jets could always play their way into bigger windows if they perform early in the season. He also spoke about that 4:25pm window (Jets don’t have any of those either)

  • “It’s not just about primetime. It’s also about the 4:25 national television window, still our most-watched window, but a couple of 4:25 windows are going to be viewed more than any primetime game.”

RB Roster Preview 🟢⚪🗽

I really like the look of the Jets RB position as long as we can maintain health. If Breece goes down then all of a sudden this position looks weak, but if we get a full season or close to a full season of the ‘Killer B’s’ then this could be one of the strongest position groups on the team.

So straight away this is how I see this unfolding:

Starter - Breece Hall
Backup - Braelon Allen
Third Down - Isaiah Davis
Returner - Kene Nwangwu
Practice squad - Chip Trayanum
Cut - Sam Scott

Starter & Feature Back - Breece Hall

This could have looked a lot different had the Jets decided to trade Breece Hall at the deadline, and they certainly had every opportunity with the Chiefs and others making calls to Darren Mougey.

But Mougey said that he wanted to build around the talent that’s already here, Aaron Glenn said that Breece was his guy and made a point to call him to silence the noise around those trade negotiations.

Breece wanted to get paid. That’s obviously money and financial security, but it’s appreciation, recognition and belief.

“God willing and we stay healthy and everything goes as planned, I feel like this is going to be my best season for sure.”

When you hand out a three year contract worth $43.5M, that’s exactly what you want to hear from your RB. But there is reason to believe that Breece could be in line for his best statistical season.

The Jets have a QB who can push the ball down the field and multiple receivers capable of stretching the field, that provides more space underneath, less stacked boxes. Breece has a seasoned play-caller in Frank Reich who helped Jonathan Taylor lead the league in rushing in the 2021 season, and he has the best offensive line he’s worked with since being drafted.

We all appreciate that Breece Hall hasn’t been put in the best position to succeed. He’s often had rookie play-callers or inefficient ones, QBs who can’t complete the basic passes and stacked boxes because defenses didn’t respect the passing game or the offensive weapons.

Yet in only four years and 56 games (50 starts), Hall has put up over 5,000 yards from scrimmage and 27 touchdowns. He already has 188 receptions to his name and that’s with having an OC who didn’t realise he could catch the football until halfway through a season.

The hope is that with Breece being settled under his new contract and Frank Reich being smart enough to know what he has, this is going to be the best year of his career. I’ve always said that I truly believe that we’ve only scratched the surface with Breece. He should be getting around 325 touches a season for me, 250 on the ground and 75 targets.

In 2023 which was arguably his best season he got 299 touches. Time to take that up a few notches and put the team on his back.

Backup - Braelon Allen

Unfortunately we didn’t really get to see the ‘Killer B’s’ in action last season with Braelon going down with an MCL injury while returning a kick in week four against Miami.

With only 18 rushing attempts on the season, 2025 was basically a redshirt year for the Wisconsin product. Now he’ll be looking to secure his role as Breece’s primary back-up and power back option. If you’ve seen some of the pictures of Braelon this off-season, you’ll see he’s embracing that power role.

There have been some murmurings of trade approaches for Allen with Hall’s new contract but coming off a season-ending injury his value is at rock-bottom, so it would be pointless trading him at this point. I don’t think the Jets will either, although they’ve handed the reigns to Breece they still need depth at a position where injuries are frequent.

Allen is back in training and looks good from the clips I’ve seen, so he should be ready to go come the start of camp and I think he’ll have a key role to play this year.

Isaiah Davis - 3rd Down

Davis is an interesting one because if Breece Hall is going to be given more opportunities in the passing game then that could limit Davis’s role even further.

The Jets return both Isaiah Williams and Kene Nwangwu who are their primary returners on special teams and while Davis’s experience there is handy, everyone will be hoping that Williams and Nwangwu stay healthy.

So where does Davis fit on the roster? He’ll get some work on third down although his pass-blocking is about as good as Breece Hall’s and that’s to say it’s bang average. Davis allowed 2 sacks last year and 8 pressures on 62 pass-blocking snaps, although his 8.9 yards per reception showcased his ability to get some key first downs for the Jets.

Could his roster position be in danger if the Jets decide that they’ll utilise Breece more in the passing game and Braelon more in the pass-block game? (Braelon is by far the Jets best pass-blocking back). Right now I’d have Davis making the roster, but his position is hardly secure.

Kene Nwangwu - Return Ace

After losing Nick Folk, Chris Banjo must have breathed a sigh of relief when he received news that Kene Nwangwu had been re-signed.

Kene rarely gets a touch in the backfield, received 1 target in the passing game and was only asked to pass-block twice last season, allowing a pressure on one of those attempts. But he is extremely valuable to the Jets and Chris Banjo.

The former All-Pro has 5 return touchdowns in his career including 1 in each of the last two seasons for the Jets. Among full-time returners Kene was ranked #1 in the NFL last season with an average of 33.6 yards per return and he has never muffed a catch in 5 seasons as a returner.

I’ve seen some people question whether his spot could be in danger with the signing of Chip Trayanum and for me the answer is absolutely not, mainly because Chip isn’t a return man.

Kene is explosive and he’s reliable, he’s also a proven commodity in the NFL and has built trust with the organisation over the last two years. They guaranteed $1 million of his contract which is a good amount for a return specialist.

Chip Trayanum - Practise Squad

Although the amendments in transfer rules make it easier, it’s rare to find a player who appeared for four different colleges.

That lack of a consistent environment probably didn’t help Chip’s draft stock as he went from being the #1 RB in Ohio during his recruiting class to a UDFA.

He had stops at Arizona State, Ohio State, Kentucy and Toledo and in 50 games played (18 starts) he finished his college career with 2,272 rushing yards, 25 touchdowns, 212 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.

Coming out of high school he had the choice between playing linebacker or RB, he chose the latter and it took him until his move to Toledo to really find a home. Of course a lot of people will say that the decline in opponent skill level was the biggest factor for his breakout season in 2025, but Chip has plenty to like about his game.

The route to a roster spot is tough for Chip though. He’s a power back built like a linebacker, he can move the pile, pick up hard yards and deliver some punishing contact on tacklers. But Braelon Allen will probably do that better than him. So he’s nowhere near as good or as elusive as Breece, not as powerful as Braelon, not as effective as a receiver as Davis and doesn’t return kicks so won’t compete for Kene’s spot.

So while it’s easy to pick up a UDFA and say they’ll fight for a roster spot, I just don’t know where Chip fits on this team right now unless the Jets trade Braelon Allen…which isn’t happening.

Sam Scott - Cut

I’ve only seen Scott play a few times but I’ve read plenty of reports and they all seem to say the same thing. Looks like an NFL RB with his size and frame, safe hands with only one fumble on rushes in his career, but where was the production in college for someone who played the likes of Air Force, Nevada and Hawaii last season among others.

Scott spent four years with Wyoming and never cracked 450 rushing yards in a season, never had more than 3 rushing touchdowns in a season and finished his career with 34 receptions. I will say that like Chip he was a linebacker to begin with and then moved to RB properly in 2023.

To me he looked quite hesitant into contact and in the NFL that just doesn’t work, arm contact could bring him down and that’s really not what you want from someone who is over 6’2 and nearly 230lbs. At that size you need to have a calling card. Chip’s is his ability to run through contact. I can’t see Scott doing enough to stick, although as always with UDFA’s, I’m happy to be proved wrong.

AROUND THE LEAGUE 🛬🛄

• Our good old friend Aaron Rodgers finally made his mind-up and he’s returning to the Steelers on a one year deal worth up to $25M. The fact the Steelers let him run this decision through to the middle of May is pretty embarrassing in my book.

• Anthony Richardson and the Colts agreed to try and find a trade partner. Nothing has been forthcoming so far so Richardson is back working with Indy and both sides seem to be getting on pretty well.

• The Rams’ seven prime-time games this season tie the 2023 Bills and the 2025 Chiefs for the most in a season in NFL history.

If there is one thing I don’t understand, it’s the NFL schedule. Or to be more precise, why there is always so much fanfare around the release.

In nearly every other sport I follow, the schedule just gets released at some point in the off-season, and then people plan their weekends accordingly.

In the NFL there are countless leaks in the 10 days leading up to the release, there are marquee games announced, there are talk shows lasting hours dissecting every single bit of information and rumour.

We knew who the Jets were playing at home and we knew who they were playing on the road, we just didn’t know when.

For people looking to head to a few games this season, the schedule is vital. But I still don’t understand the need to drag it out and put it under a microscope.

But that’s what the NFL is now, it craves and feeds off 24/7 attention. Maybe that’s why they made such a big fuss about something so ordinary, right in the middle of the NBA and NHL playoffs.

Anyway, that’s me sharing a little bugbear of mine.

There are some noticeable things straight away

1. The NFL just couldn’t resist the temptation to have the Jets head to Tennessee to take on their old head coach in his first game as a HC since being fired from his position. There will be a ton of build-up, Jermaine Johnson vs the team that traded, T’Vondre Sweat against the team that traded him. Michael Carter, Solomon Thomas, JFM and Tony Adams will be playing against their old team. For the Jets I actually like this as a first opponent, of all the road teams on our roster, Tennessee shouldn’t scare anyone. So while the NFL are licking their lips over all the storylines they can push, I’m seeing this as a good opportunity to get off to a good start.

2. The start of the schedule after Tennessee is rough. Three of our first four are on the road and the only home game is a tough one against Green Bay. Playing on the road against the Lions and the Bears in back-to-back weeks will test this new-look defense to the limit. That’s two top-10 offenses straight out of the gate, and with the Jets having so much change on defense I’m not sure I trust them to be in full flow by week three.

3. But…having said that, the next four games are extremely kind. So even if the Jets are in a 1-3 hole early which is very possible, they then have the Browns, Patriots, Dolphins and Raiders with three of those games coming at home. That’s the period where you need to pick up consecutive wins to give yourself any chance of being in the playoff hunt.

4. No primetime games for the Jets for the first time since 2007. Love it.

I actually don’t mind this schedule. There are plenty of 1pm starts which is great for me. It’s not until week 11 that we get a game outside that window, and even then it’s a 4:05pm game due to being in LA.

We have a patch of 3-4 rough games, following by 3-4 games that appear at least on paper to be easier. But a key injury here or there makes the difficult ones look easy and some early form make the easy ones look difficult, you really can’t tell.

I always prefer a later bye week as by that point in the season your team is usually beat up and getting an extra week off before the final 4 games is welcome. I think this is the latest bye week we’ve ever had, so let’s see if it makes a difference or not.

I never really like doing record predictions, especially at this point in the off-season, but if I absolutely had to, here is how I’d mark it up right now.

Wins: Tennessee, Browns, Dolphins (R), Dolphins (H), Patriots (H), Bills (H), Raiders (H), Vikings (H), Cardinals.
Losses: Green Bay, Detroit, Chicago, Patriots (R), Bills (R), Chiefs (R), Chargers (R), Denver

But you could make an argument for and against most games.

• The Jets decided they’d seen enough of Will Ferrin, cutting him to make space for Tim Patrick. Ferrin the UDFA kicker out of BYU didn’t have the best rookie camp by most accounts, and the Jets have Lenny Krieg and Cade York to battle it out in the early months of the summer.

• NFL.com listed the Jets as one of the main winners with the schedule release:

  • “The Jets face their share of landmines early on, but there’s also this: Four of their first eight games come against the Titans (Week 1), Browns (Week 5), Dolphins (Week 7) and Raiders (Week 8). Win those four, and Glenn would be sitting at .500 at worst nearing the midpoint of the season. Heck, if he can win three, he’d have already matched last year’s total. And beating ex-Jets coach Robert Saleh on the road to kick things off certainly would earn Glenn some buy-in (though losing that one might, of course, hurt more than your typical defeat).”

The Jets signed a veteran receiver late last night and for me, it’s a shrewd bit of business. But to kick things off, I want to talk about Bamba, Mory Bamba.

The Jets secondary is going to be one of the most fascinating position battles this summer. I think it’s near impossible to pick out the five starters at this point of the off-season.

Although you could certainly put some players above others, I think there are a couple of positions up for grabs and competition breeds excellence.

Mory Bamba will be starting camp at the bottom of that depth chart having arrived to little fanfare as a UDFA out of BYU.

Stephens, Thomas, Wright, Ponds, Stiggers, Brownlee Jr, Clark and even Samuel Womack will be ahead in the pecking order.

But Bamba’s athletic attributes have me intrigued.

The reason why he went undrafted is easy to put your finger on. He started only 7 games over three seasons in Provo and failed to record a single interception in over 500 coverage snaps. He was also limited to just 8 snaps in BYU’s Pop-Tarts Bowl victory over Georgia Tech being tagged for a TD allowed on his own coverage target.

But the Jets were interested enough to make Bamba a priority once the final draft selection had been made.

That interest probably sits with his frame (6’2, 192lbs) and his speed clocked at 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash, which would have been #1 amongst CBs had Bamba been invited to the combine. The measurables and the athletic testing would put him at the top of the draft, but the inexperience and rawness made him fall out of the bottom.

“If you don’t believe Mory Bamba can play in the NFL, go look at that Utah game tape,” former BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill said and he’s talking about this huge 4th and 1 stop which flashed Bamba’s athleticism for all to see

And if you need a few more measurables, here is his RAS score which has his forty 0.02 seconds slower than was officially reported at the BYU Pro day.

His speed shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. He headed to Division III Wisconsin-Oshkosh straight out of high-school to run track. After transitioning to football he headed to ASA College (Miami) and then to Tyler JC in Texas where he met former BYU player Tanner Jacobson, who connected him to the Cougars recruiting and coaching staff.

“Mory has some of the best size and speed I’ve seen at corner,” defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga said. “If you go back to the Arizona game — maybe the best game of his career — I think a lot of NFL scouts saw the ability he has with his size and speed, his physicality being a great tackler, one of the best gunners and jammers on special teams that I have ever had, and once again just that combination of size and speed (is impressive). I know NFL scouts have loved this guy for two years now … and I know he’s going to give himself a chance to be a long NFL vet,”

The problem with Bamba is that there just isn’t a lot of tape to go one. He spent four years at BYU, but never cracked 400 defensive snaps in any one season. To put it into context, Bamba had lee snaps over his four year career than Brandon Stephens had in 2025 alone.

But this is why you pay coaches. He has the athleticism but does he have enough football acumen and talent to make it at the highest level. At the very least based on what his former HC had to say about him at BYU, he’s a block of clay to mould for Chris Banjo on the special teams unit.

Jets Sign Tim Patrick

Late last night the Jets made a smart veteran addition to their receiver room, inking Patrick to a deal that will pay him just over the vets minimum benefit of $1.5M, and considering his experience, it’s a smart deal.

You’ll remember that I wanted Patrick last off-season, but he signed on with Jacksonville instead. He was a rotational piece catching 15 passes for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns while appearing in all 16 games.

Patrick hasn’t really been the same since he suffered the ACL injury in 2022 and the Achilles injury in 2023, but he’s a respected veteran and locker-room presence and considering the Jets youth in that room, that’s a bonus.

He’s also a little different to what we already have. He’s all of 6’5 and 210lbs and is a decent enough run blocker, he had a few drop issues in Jacksonville (3 on 25 targets) but that 16.7% drop rate is an aberration when compared to the rest of his career which sits at 6.8% (inclusive of last year).

This isn’t an earth-shattering signing, but I think it’s a very smart signing.

There are a lot of very cliche expressions that you can throw around at this time of the year. Bear Bryant’s “Championships are won in the off-season” comes to mind, or even the famous Benjamin Franklin quote “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”.

I don’t seriously have championship aspirations for this team but sports is a funny old thing. The Mets entered the 2026 season with those title aspirations and they currently own the worst record in baseball. My Japanese baseball team the Yakult Swallows entered the season with everyone picking them to finish dead last in the Central, and right now they’re tied for the most wins in the league.

For as much as we think we know sports, it’s unpredictable. If you’d have put $10 on a Super Bowl matchup that saw the Seahawks face the Patriots, you’d have won over $15k. The Seahawks were 60-1 to make the big game, the Patriots 80-1. The Jets are currently 200-1 to win a championship next season, worth a punt.

• Jaden Keller who was signed after a successful tryout apparently turned plenty of heads during rookie minicamp with his speed and versatility. (Connor Hughes).

• According to the updated strength of schedule which is based on 2025 team records and as such doesn’t mean a great deal…the Jets have the 12th toughest schedule in the NFL this year, but the easiest in the AFC East.

• It seems that Harrison Phillips has taken new acquisition T’Vondre Sweat under his wing: ‘I’ve tried to put him under my wing. We’ve been working out in all of our workouts together … It’s really fun pushing each other. If I do beat him at something I make sure to [say], you’re letting an old guy beat you? 🤣 👴 If he beats me at something he makes sure to let me know.’ (Jake Asman)

• The Jets released a really nice behind the scenes video from rookie camp. You can check that out HERE. Apparently David Bailey doesn’t wear gloves because he feels faster without them.

• Breece Hall has been speaking about why he decided to return to the Jets by signing a new three year deal, and it comes down to two things. AG and Mougey building out the roster:

  • “Just the fact that they brought a proven veteran like Geno Smith and then we drafted some really good guys, and I’m still getting to know everybody, too. So just seeing that let me know that, OK, we’re really trying to build something here. And AG always telling me that I’m his guy. So him always instilling that confidence or telling me that he has that confidence in me, and the confidence I have in myself is very big. So, it definitely meant a lot for me because they showed me and told me that they wanted me to be a part of this thing. So, I’m definitely happy to be here.”

The Quarterbacks 🟢⚪🗽

We’re going to start working our way through the Jets roster as we get closer and closer to camp. We’ve got a long time with mandatory minicamp still over a month away and training camp around 2 months away. We don’t have a definitive date yet for training camp but it seems to always sit around July 14th-24th. Somewhere in there.

So we have time. A lot of time.

We’re going to take this one position at a time, starting today with the most important position on the field. The quarterbacks.

Starter - Geno Smith

Backup - ????

Third String - Cade Klubnik

Practice Squad/Cut Candidates - Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe

A lot can change through the course of the next 3 months, but right now I think it’s safe to assume a couple of things about this position and the Jets.

Geno Smith is undoubtedly the starter, the Jets are still searching for that veteran backup and the team are high on Cade Klubnik’s development.

There is a world where Cade get’s elevated to that backup role with + performance through camp which in turn moves Cook or Zappe up. But the Jets are high on Russell Wilson and the expectation is if it’s not him then another veteran will join to offer a steady presence behind Geno.

Geno Smith

How far the Jets go will depend on what Geno they get.

Are we getting the 2022-2024 Geno who won 27 games with the Seahawks completed over 65% of his passes for over 12,000 yards with 71 TDs to 35 INTs.

Or are we getting the 2025 Geno who threw for only 3,025 yards while throwing 17 interceptions to 19 TDs while taking a career high 55 sacks in 15 games.

There were some signs that his late season renaissance bubble had burst in 2024, despite completing over 70% of his passes for 4320 yards. That year he had 15 debilitating interceptions and 9 fumbles. Turning the ball over 24 times will generate a lot of negative momentum.

But make no mistake about it, Geno was on a truly abysmal football team last season that was severely lacking in talent at several key positions that directly impact the QBs ability to succeed.

The Jets have done all they can to put him in a completely different position. They already got their bookend tackles, they drafted two huge offensive weapons, tied up the RB and ensured that Garrett Wilson could hit the ground running this off-season after sitting him down the stretch in 2025.

Geno will be surrounded by experience in offensive coordinator Frank Reich and QB coach Bill Musgrave. If he fails, it won’t be on the Jets.

Backup

I’m hopeful that the backup spot will eventually go to Cade where he’ll have to play a few snaps here and there to get his feet wet. Bringing in Russell Wilson just doesn’t excited me and while I understand the calls for another veteran, there isn’t a lot out there. Some have pointed to Jimmy Garoppolo, but apparently he’s considering retirement, and if you’re considering it, your head is already there and it’s time to hang them up.

Cade Klubnik

It’s important to not get carried away.

Right now we’re seeing a lot of stories around the same theme “What we learned from rookie camp” and most of them will wax poetic about Cade Klubnik. I like that the atmosphere has shifted form impending doom to hopeful excitement, but did we really learn anything that we didn’t already know?

Klubnik was always regarded as a really good teammate, a really good charachter and extremely detail orientated with his prep. As Steve mentioned yesterday you’re already seeing some call him a “whiteboard warrior” for his preparation before the game and lack of delivery during it. That’s a very unfair assessment for a player who’s won as much as Cade has, and while 2025 was a huge disappointment, this is a guy who threw for 3,639 yards, 36 TDs and just 6 INTs in 2024. I’d rather have someone who is detailed in his prep than a workout warrior who doesn’t have anything between the ears.

At points over the last few seasons Breece Hall has cut a sultry figure, leading many to believe that the former Iowa State man had no intention of sticking in New York with the Jets. There were some cryptic social media messages as there so often is with players these days, and understandably the losing took a toll. But Mougey said it was a priority to sign Breece and he delivered that lucrative contract keeping one of the Jets most explosive playmakers in the building. Breece said he cried…I think I’d shed a tear or two at that kind of money.

Hall is still only 24-years-old and is about to enter the prime of his career. The Jets signed him to a 3-year $43.5M contract that could rise to $45.75M. $29M is guaranteed at the time of signing. That average value of $14.5M is slightly above the Franchise tag amount $14.3M and puts him as the 4th highest paid RB in the league. Considering he’s coming off his first 1,000+ yard rushing season, the Jets are betting on there being more to come from Breece, and I think they’re right.

Mougey also structured the deal to frontload the guarantees, with no money guaranteed in year three of the deal. It’s a smart move.

Since entering the league he’s top 15 with 5,040 scrimmage yards over four years, despite missing plenty of time, playing on a team that went 22-46 and played musical chairs with it’s QB, OC and HC.

Breece’s journey has been anything but smooth, there have been some injuries and some questionable offensive coordinators who failed to utilise his ability in the passing game, and I’m not just talking about Nathaniel Hackett here, Tanner Engstrand only created 36 receptions for Hall last year, a number that is probably around half what it should be. It’s now up to Frank Reich to eek all $14.5M worth of value out of Breece in 2026.

Securing the signature of Breece offers the Jets some calm. Players under the franchise tag are unpredictable and can create negative headlines. Will they play under the tag? If they do will they create problems in the locker room? Will they turn up for mandatory camp? By signing Breece Hall to a three year deal the Jets avoid all those questions, all those headaches. The Jets get one of the best young RBs in the league for three more years, through the prime years of a RBs career. Breece Hall gets that security that comes with the money on a second deal and the recognition that the team truly believes in him.

The Jets will enter the 2026 season with one of the most exciting offences they’ve had in a long time. It starts with the bookend tackles in Membou and Fashanu, carries on with Hall and Allen in the backfield, Taylor and Sadiq at TE and a trio of receivers in Wilson, Cooper Jr and AD Mitchell. Can Geno conjure up enough magic to pull all the pieces together? Can Cade do something special and create a difficult decision for the powers that be? Expectations will always be tempered with the QB situation murky at best, but it’s OK to be just that little bit excited about what this unit could be.

NEWS & NOTES

• Cade Klubnik…don’t you give me hope. The Jets 4th round pick looked good over the weekend according to all accounts, showing good timing and accuracy on his throws. He then stepped up to the podium and exuded confidence and leadership by talking about growing through the adversity at Clemson. He also arranged a walk-through with the offence after sessions had finished, that kind of thing doesn’t go unnoticed. Especially from a guy who’s been in the building for a matter of days. I’m not going to get too carried away from a handful of low intensity sessions, but it’s a good start.

  • “We had a lot of hours of install,” Klubnik said. “We finished up around seven, eight o’clock, and I think around nine o’clock, some of us got together the last two nights and was like, ‘Hey man, we want to make sure that we’re clean when we get out there.’ And we’re all studying our rooms by ourselves anyway we’re up until 10, 11 o’clock, studying and making sure we have all of our notes down, and making sure we’re clean when we get to the next day.”

• The Jets signed veteran offensive lineman Landon Young to a deal following a successful tryout at rookie camp. Young was a former 6th-round pick out of Kentucky who’s appeared in 56 games since 2021. He’s a former 5* high school recruit and made All-SEC in 2000, so there is plenty of talent in there. While in New Orleans he played right across the line taking snaps at every position other than centre and he was often used as a 6th OL in certain sets. He offers decent depth on the line with his ability to play tackle and guard.

• In a corresponding move the Jets released WR Mac Dalena who was a UDFA in the 2025 draft coming off a 1000+ receiving season with Fresno State.

• Kenyon Sadiq was asked about how he would fit in with the other TE’s on the roster and he said the possibilities for Frank Reich are endless. He’s also looking forward to learning from Omar Cooper Jr:

  • “Great human,” Sadiq said, referring to Cooper. “I played against him twice, didn’t beat him, that’s right. He’s easy to be around. We’re pretty similar personality types, so it’s very level. He goes out there and does his thing, catches about every ball in the air, runs a great route. So I’m learning from him, trying to piggyback off what he does. He’s just a great guy to be around. It’s a bunch of good guys that care about football, and I think it’s pretty cool.”

• The kicking competition is partly underway with Lenny Krieg and Will Ferrin taking part in rookie camp over the weekend. By all accounts it’s advantage Krieg with Ferrin missing a couple off to the side. They will soon be joined by veteran Cade York who is considered the favourite to the win the job, but I still say the Jets 2026 kicker is currently on someone else’s roster.
